Did we play Lou Williams at PG so long...

Post#1 » by parson » Sun Feb 9, 2014 5:51 am

... in order to see if we can live without Teague? At first, I automatically wondered if we were trading one of Mack or Schröder but, upon reflection, it makes more sense if we're thinking about trading Teague.

As I watched the game (on delay), it was obvious to me that we made a choice to go with Lou Williams at point down the stretch. We could have won with Teague in there at the end. Strange time for an experiment but reasonable if we were trying to determine if Lou can at least play backup PG.

We've already discussed Teague-for-Afflalo, so what about other possibilities? Any ideas? Gonna go to bed now and think.

(or maybe we were showcasing Lou?)
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Note that trading Teague during the season requires his approval because of the RFA match.

I think we're fishing some on the PG position. Teague started the season really hot but has cooled off to the point where he's barely above average offensively. Mack is good... for a former D-Leaguer. Backup grade guy, but his versatility and price make him a bit more valuable than his résumé suggests. Schröder is just flat not ready yet.

I think we're having open tryouts right now. Schröder closed versus IND; now Lou closes versus MEM. Mack & Teague have had plenty of opportunities. Wouldn't surprise me if we end up targeting a PG at the deadline.

:o

Now, that is a bold prediction. If we were to make a move that has us shipping out an asset to bring a 4th (5th?) PG to the team, that is a complete indictment on Dennis Schroeder.

I'd dare to say that doing so would indicate Ferry & Bud see DS as a complete bust a mere three months into his rookie season. Dear God, I hope that's not the case...

Think you might be taking that a bit far... All it means for Schrõder is that a 20 yo rookie whose highest level of experience prior to this season was the German league isn't quite ready for the NBA. No, assuming everything above is actually how our FO feels (an important caveat to say the least), the real indictment here is to Teague.

If we target someone for the long term (i.e., Rondo), then I could see Schröder as part of the package. If we do something more short term (i.e., Lowry), then I think we may be hoping to deal off the younger, more cost controlled Teague for the veteran.

I dont see teague going anywhere, Lou Williams is who doesnt fit for us.

I keep thinking its going to be Lou who gets shipped out, thats what I hear

I'd agree that I could see Lou being traded as being a much higher likelihood than Teague - mostly because of Teague's RFA match gives him a lot of rights that make trading him so messy though. I still look at the fact that others are closing out games instead of Teague and think that can't be a coincidence. Mack (many games earlier this season), Schröder (against IND), and now Lou have closed out games at PG while Teague sat and watched. Even if he isn't traded, that's a pretty clear indictment on him...

Pop does this in SA too, he lets other people get minutes at weird times. Watching the game from the bench may be a teaching tool for Jeff. Showing him what others are doing, different perspective.
