On a personal note - everyone OK?
Snow a Jam '14 hit and I've been seeing some nightmare stories from all over the ATL. I'm actually bed-ridden right now due to a broken ankle suffered just after New Year's so I've just been checking out stories all day.
First and foremost, I hope all is well with you and yours. There have been numerous scary situations over the last 30 some odd hours and prayers to anyone who hasn't yet gotten to hold or call everyone they care for who has been affected.

Re: On a personal note - everyone OK?
Thanks for the concern. Things are wonderful here in SC: roads melted pretty well, although overpasses/underpasses have some black ice. All in all, we got the day off to play in 3-4 inches of snow. Family day!
Sorry about the ankle. I broke a small bone in mine years ago but didn't know it at first. Limped on it for 6 weeks before I gave up and went to the doctor, who x-rayed it and said it was broken and had healed wrong. Whenever the weather changes, I wish I'd gotten into bed and let it heal properly, so you're better off where you are. Remember, when you get old, whatever injuries you've suffered will return to bite you.

My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Good to hear! Didn't even know SC had been hit that hard. My wife is from Birmingham and we live in Cumming so my attention has been more West on top of Atlanta.
As far as me, I'm already old and already have a few aches when the rains come. This time there was really no choice; I couldn't walk away from a 20' fall off a roof. I actually had to go to a different hospital than the closest one since I had to go to one that deals with trauma. The ambulance ride was 20 minutes longer because of that... But the pain drugs were kicking in so I guess it wasn't that big a deal.

Man, things really have been scary since this snow hit yesterday. But on the bright side I've seen so many stories of people helping each other out through this time of crisis: bringing food to those who are stranded, helping people with their car troubles. The good people of Atlanta are really demonstrating that world famous Southern Hospitality.

I have had sooooo many friends fall off ladders. I guess it's a sign a man can't do what he used to.

Re: On a personal note - everyone OK?
Luckily I got home before the roads got too bad. Roads were still clear when we dismissed from school (we dismiss very early by school standards).
My wife did work last night (she is a nurse) so the roads were okay on her way to work, but it took her nearly 2 hours to go a 10-15 minute ride this morning due to the road conditions (Gwinnett County). She said she slipped and slid all the way home from work.
By this afternoon the roads in our subdivision had cleared up but we still get school canceled for another day.

My wife left for work Tuesday morning and couldn't make it back until yesterday around noon. 2 plus days....crazy.
Luckily I decided not to take my daughter to Daycare Tuesday morning and to work from home. I can't imagine not being able to get to my lil girl.

I couldn't imagine going through snow and ice with six lanes of traffic.
In normal years, do you guys get much snow? I was down in November and the weather was perfect.

In a "normal" year, we'll get a dusting (< 1") of snow 3-4x and it'll stick once. For instance, there is already a prediction that it'll snow this Friday. There will be some years we don't have any snow that actually sticks. It is very rare that we'll ever have snow that hangs around for more than a day.
I think the problem this year came from the city and state getting more and more courageous with snow in general. Growing up, it seemed that everyone understood that we simply didn't have the infrastructure to deal with snow so if snow threatened, then everything would shut down - even if the snow didn't really come. As corporations moved in and the city grew, we also had more out of towners who'd see that Atlanta would basically shut down for a 1/2" of snow w/o the temperature dropping enough to actually have ice which, even as a lifelong Atlantan, I agree is kind of ridiculous (nice, yes, but also ridiculous). So the city leaders slowly changed the policies from "if a possibility of snow exists" to more of a "a certainty that snow and ice is coming" before acting. Unfortunately, this didn't come with a corresponding uptick in preparedness for a bad decision in not shutting the city down... and here we are.

We will have a snow storm like this once every couple of years (the last one was 3 years ago).
It's not really the snow that causes issues, it is the ice. Usually it will rain then it will freeze overnight. What caused this one to be so bad was that it started snowing earlier and as it hit the ground, it melted, then it froze during the day. It caused everyone to rush home, making horrible traffic jams due to everyone wanting to get home asap.
Ice is a huge problem in the south. It will rain, freeze, and then trees start falling. Up north it is mostly snow.
Everyone makes a big deal about what happened, but no one said anything when New York shut down because it was too hot.

ROUND 2.
Do we all have power? I know everyone around here is hunkered down, staying off the roads. So long as we have electricity, we're all good. Personally, we have natural gas in some rooms, so even if the power goes off, we're warm.
Is everyone okay?

We're fine up in Lawrenceville.
We have power, but if it goes out I could get cold.
My wife is a nurse and she had to work last night (and tonight) so she is spending the day at the hospital and sleeping when she can. She posted a picture to facebook this morning of her car. She said she had to break the ice to open her car door.

Re: On a personal note - everyone OK?
In SC, a nurse can call the sheriff's office to have a deputy drive her to work (at the hospital) if the roads are unsafe. Of course, he won't drive her home, so she'd be stuck there. I talked to a nurse yesterday at a local hospital who said they're putting cots in the auditorium for the nurses. We're hearing that any power outages might take 2 weeks to resolve.

They've had people spending the night for a while. Last storm two weeks ago was like this as well.
They are staying in empty patient rooms, empty offices, conference rooms. One floor put cots in the hallways for nurses to sleep.

Thanks for asking... We're all hunkered down, have power and food. If we lose power, then I'm not sure what well do - probably break out every blanket in the house.

We have food and power here. They say we should expect even more bad weather until sunrise tomorrow morning in the metro area. Just glad that the state as a whole was more prepared this time around and that we learned from our mistakes. Good to know yall are OK.
