A reason to be confident in our draft tonight

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 2:33 pm

A story from Pops on something very specific that Bud did as an assistant coach in SA

http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/atlanta-hawk ... denholzer/

... one example of something that is really significant that affect the team that would be the George Hill-Kawhi Leonard trade. Bud was all over me for that one. I didn’t want to do it because George Hill was one of my favorite players all-time. I had a real special relationship with that kid. To this day, we still work together on a couple of community things in San Antonio and Indianapolis. I did not want to do it but Bud was the driving force behind it. He was hammering myself and R.C. because we need a 3, we need a bigger 3. George Hill would have continued to play behind Tony Parker probably, in all logic I assume that would have been true. With Manu (Ginoboli) at the 2, George wasn’t going to get all the minutes he deserved. With a need at the 3 so Manu wouldn’t have to play the position, or Danny Green, we thought this would make some sense. I remember right up until draft night, I’m sitting up there with Peter Holt, our owner, and Bud is done there hammering on R.C. and looking up at me. They are looking up, at me and I’m thinking “I don’t want to do this. Jesus I don’t want to do this.’ He made me pull the trigger and it’s been a great trade for both teams. That was something very specific that he had his hand in.

Bud identified the Finals MVP and made the push to acquire him, even trading away an important rotation guy who Pops loved. Just... wow.

It also speaks to his willingness to trade a currently productive player if it means we'll get someone even better via draft. At the end of the day it's Danny's decision but I'm sure Bud has his ear.

Also, FWIW, I had a dream last night where we traded Teague for the #8(9?) and some scrubs, and then we drafted Kyle Anderson at #15.

I wasn't thrilled at that dream.

The difference is Hill was a bench player and could easily be replaced while Kawhi developed. Guys like Teague/Milsap/Horford will not be easily replaced, while the pick develops, if they are moved for a pick.

Fair enough. Still I think it shows great vision and talent identification from Bud

But I think we going to be getting Saric and another Euro-slash. Make a trade or two then call it a night.

This is my HOPE and what I have suspected for weeks now.

Teague is the impact veteran SAC needs. We get a shot at Dario or Staukas at #8.

Kyle Anderson at #15...we'll see how it turns out.

The sign of a true ATL fan... things get screwed up even in our dreams.

Teague will be our starting PG next year and every one is going to be happy with his production at the end of the year. Calling it now. There will be no doubt about his future with the team after his performance this season.

The affalo trade makes me think a lot of the rumors we read about are grossly over estimated BUT if the kings do truly want schroeder I would do it if say aaron gordon is available. if not I like schroeder I just think teague and mack are already a solid 1 2 punch.

the grantland channel on youtube has a video of the kings gm openly discussing trading the pick with his team

since saric signed in turkey he may fall to us at 15 and we can stash him and have wing help w/ gordon. I also like payne and anderson

should be fun tonight! I do enjoy all kinds of feedback btw I've got tough skin and love posting, regardless.

Great article and nice find!

I have confidence in Bud and Ferry, but , IMO, this is their first REAL test. This draft and this FA , they have to hit a homerun on something

I have zero confidence in Ferry, Sund, and the rest of the front office when it comes to acquiring talent.

Asik, Afflalo, and many more players that are talent upgrades for this team will wear different jerseys next year but I doubt any will wear a Hawks jersey

Exactly this - plus Orlando saved $6.3 mil. What would we send them to save that kind of money. (Dennis,JJ, Bebe)? not worth it.
New Orleans are idiots for giving up a 1st rounder next season (4-19) for Asik. It means the HAVE to make the players as at least a 6th seed to keep the pick in the tough West.

I was torn between Payne and Harris. Still like the pick though
