Hawks Training Camp Central

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Sep 24, 2014 5:33 pm

Updating to make this thread Training Camp Centric all around

AJC's Beat Writer puts out first piece of the new season:

Stories of the day:
The health of John Jenkins
Now that it’s here I feel better than ever,” Jenkins said of a new season. “I’m bigger, faster, stronger and my game went to new levels because I went through so much mentally with this injury."

Hawks making defense point of emphasis
“If we want to get to where we want to be, we are going to have to be better defensively,” coach Mike Budenholzer said. “As a group, we want to have a defensive identity."
Budenholzer and players said improving the team’s transition defense is the top priority. It was an issue at times last season as Budenholzer and his staff installed new principles.

Thoughts? Concerns? Predictions?

Re: Things to Watch at Hawks Training Camp

My things to watch:

-How Horford's return effects Millsap and Teague's pecking order in the offense. Can JT0 go back to being the third option on offense? Can PM be as effective taking only a fraction of the shots he avg last season?

-How Horford's playing time will be handled going forward. I'd hope we would ride him very lightly for the first few months of the season. Can we count on Muscala/Pero/Brand for heavy minutes early?

-How the assistant coaches fill the void created by Quin Snyder's departure. Darvin Ham is the top assistant. Not sure how I feel about that. I never pegged him as a cerebral/fundamentals guy as a player. Will Spahija (much more coaching experience) take over a greater role?

-Rotation/Playing time of Backups. We have 15 players, but only 13 can be active on a game day. Who will be the odd men out early in the season?

-Can Dennis the Menace finally cement his status as top backup after a noteworthy offseason with Summer League and World Cup Basketball?

-Will any of the Hawks top players express an endorsement for Ferry publicly? I've been waiting. All I've heard are crickets...

Things I'll be looking for:

- Obviously how Horford looks in terms of health/rust.

- If we can actually trust Dennis to run the offense as the 1st PG off the bench, or if he's still a 'project'.

- How Payne integrates with Horford and Millsap - he'll likely eventually be the 1st big off the bench but not sure if he can step in immediately as a '6th man' or if he's more 'role player' at this point.

- Whether Thabo can shoot like he did a few years ago, or if last year's slump was more than just a slump

- How Bazemore looks as a scoring wing

Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer told the AJC that Al Horford still isn't 100 percent and will be limited to start camp but is expected to be ready to go for the regular season opener.

Interesting. He tore it the first time, and he was back that season. Hes being held out much longer this time I believe

Can Carroll retain his starter position against Sefolosha?

Sefolosha has the same skillset as Carroll, however, Sefolosha got winning experience that nobody on the Hawks roster has.

Will Horford play away from the basket like Chris Bosh did in MIA when LeBron was there so he won't hurt his pectoral again banging against bigger centers or will they still play him the same prior to his season-ending injury?

I'm interested in seeing how the Hawks plan to use Adreian Payne. Will he be used at Center or PF. Will he get 2 minutes or 10 minutes. And has he improved his consistency from the NBA 3pt range since summer league?

From what I've seen on depth charts, he's a PF. I just wouldn't be surprised to see him play since it seems like Bud doesn't play rookies much.

Jenkins back in fine form according to AJC Beat writer Chris Vivlamore.

Jenkins spent time at Vanderbilt University, getting back to basics, working with his former coaches and doing old shooting drills.
[He] returned to Atlanta and eventually Hawks players gathered in September for open gym. His shot came back. The pace of the game came back. His confidence came back. It was noticeable...“Now that it’s here I feel better than ever,” Jenkins said of a new season. “I’m bigger, faster, stronger and my game went to new levels because I went through so much mentally with this injury.”

Glad to hear his health issues seem to be behind him. The story also explains why he looked so rusty at Summer League.

Hope he gets back in the rotation at SG. Nothing would make me happier than seeing JJ2 and Dennis the Menace cement their spots as first off the bench for their respective positions. If we're gonna continue our goal of being SAS east, we have to get more rotation players from our drafts.

I still hope Dennis and Jenkins can be the starting back court in a couple of seasons. With DS playing the role of Tony Parker and Jenkins playing the role of Denny Green.

That new found depth of ours is already being tested:

Pero Antic had surgery to repair a broken nose and the Hawks center missed practice Saturday. The Hawks also were without DeMarre Carroll, who suffered a twisted ankle during the session...Antic, sporting two black eyes while sitting out practice, took an elbow during a training camp practice Thursday.
According to coach Mike Budenholzer, Antic had the surgical procedure Friday and will be fitted for a protective mask. He will be held out of contact for several days...Antic will not play in Monday’s exhibition season opener against the Pelicans. Budenholzer also ruled out Al Horford (pectoral) and Kent Bazemore (foot).

Good thing Horford is okay with playing Center...

Schroeder has indeed made the decision a tough one:

If the competition is even remotely close, I'm in the camp that says give it to the young guy with more upside. It benefits the franchise long term if Dennis gets the valuable experience now in a veteran, competitive team.

I've never viewed Mack as anything more than a stopgap.

I think Mack is a prototypical solid backup. Dennis on the other hand looks very much like a slashing-oriented scorer. They bring different things to the offense.

In terms of how I'd play them, I'd play Mack with guys like Scott, Korver, and maybe DeMarre, because he's a better setup guy and those guys can score. I'd play Dennis with a more defensive-oriented lineup with maybe one other 'scorer' (Al?) and ask him to play aggressively.

Interesting... I have thought the opposite. I see Dennis as a penetrator / playmaker, but also one that will drive and dish guy as well as score. He has had problems with efficiency around the basket and I think that has led opponents to "giving" him the close in shots over collapsing on him. As this thread and the one on Dennis point out, he has made nice strides in both his efficiency around the basket and his TOs. Assuming that trend continues, I'd be more apt to pair him with shooters on the wings who can take advantage of wandering defenders looking to clog up the paint.

Mack, OTOH, seems more of a bring the ball up and start the O guy. His assists come more from play calls and ball movement than him beating his guy and causing the defense to crash on him. Because of this, I would assume we'd prefer to have guys more comfortable with the ball in their hands - not necessarily on the bounce, but having the ability to keep the ball moving and find the cutter.

Now, I think most of our wings can fill both roles. Korver most definitely can; I remember thinking that Jenkins might end up as a poor man's Stephen Curry if his development path went that direction; Carroll would be more of a cutter than a guy with the ball but that works too; we'll see on Thabo and Bazemore but I think both have it in them and I believe in Coach Bud and staff to get it out of them. Millsap can cover if someone is uncomfortable holding the ball and making decisions although I think, as a whole, all the bigs are comfortable with both passing and shooting.
