Horford Now Eligible for Contract Extension

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Tue Dec 30, 2014 6:05 am

Dug this nugget up during my research:

There’s been a run on veteran extensions of late. Four players have signed such deals within the past six months after only two had signed them since the 2011 lockout that begat the existing collective bargaining agreement. Zach Randolph, Tony Parker, Anderson Varejao and Rudy Gay all agreed to forfeit free agency, where the rules would have allowed them to sign for more money over a greater amount of time. Players who sign veteran extensions can tack no more than three years on their existing deals, and they can earn raises of no more than 4.5%. Free agents can re-sign with their teams for five seasons and raises of up to 7.5%.

The timing of the recent spate of veteran extensions is counterintuitive, since the lockout prevented several would-be extension-eligibles from even considering the idea for much of this year. Players become eligible for veteran extensions three years after they sign their contracts. Those who signed long-term contracts in 2011 became eligible for veteran extensions in 2014, but because the lockout pushed the typical July flurry of signings into December, those players only became eligible this month.

The article goes on to list Horford as one of the veterans this scenario applies to.

Thoughts?
Predictions?
Concerns?

Man, I really hope we lock Horford up to an extension. Considering his massive injury history, we should be able to get him at a bargain. I think I would throw up if I had to watch Horford in a different jersey a couple years from now..

[Some Players] fall into the sweet spot that makes veteran extensions...advantageous for them.

...veterans who wouldn’t command the maximum salary in free agency and were on contracts that paid them at or above their market value. There’s no bottom floor for the value of an extension, so [they are] free to negotiate within the broad range of their existing player-friendly salaries all the way down to the minimum.

A few very knowledgeable posters have mentioned that Horford or any other vets would have no incentive for signing an extension early. The article goes on to paint a scenario where certain players would be (and have been) willing to forego free agency in exchange for the added security and stability of accepting an extension at a reasonable rate witht heir current franchise.

Examples include Zach Randolph, Tony Parker, Rudy Gay and Anderson Varejao. (The oft-injured. The well travled. The happy to play on one team forever.)

I'm hopeful Horford will fall into this sweet spot and be willing to engage in good faith negotitations over the next 6 months. I don't want to see another Josh Smith scenario. I love AL. Hope he's here for the rest of his career. But we have to consider what is best for the franchise. Portland turned Gerald Wallace into Damian Lillard. Utah traded Deron Williams for Derrick Favors. SAS turned George Hill into Kawhi Leonard.

If AL is unwilling to commit to the franchise...we have to seriously start considering what we could get in return for him.

I'm hopeful that a modest year production-wise...but a great year by the team will be enough to help AL consider re-signing for $15 million+ for the next three years. Him on a max salary here just doesn't seem likely or wise....

Horford should be gotten on a reasonable contract. if not, the Monroe can come in as an insurance policy.

some other long shot free agent replacements: Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, Tristan Thompson, Omer Asik, Enes Kanter, Tyson Chandler....

Horford would be wise to stay put if the money is "reasonable". I suspect he and Millsap will have some soul searching to do. Hawks are banking on the " spurs" way permeating into contract negotiations I suspect. Hoping both or 1 take discounts to be on a winning team.

I don't see that happening, personally, players chase money , who wouldn't.

I had no idea he could get an extension this early. I figured Summer of 2016 or during the 2015-16 season.

It's so hard to predict because there's uncertainty with the Hawks - their playoff performance, new ownership coming in and their vision and if Millsap resigns back.
