Its really kind of confusing right now. Schroeder is by far the best point guard we ever had in germany but is also critizised a lot in the media and by the fans. Despite his opponents always wanting him to shot from the outside he is nearly able to go to the rim at will. The only real problem in his game are his turnovers and his inability to make his teammates better (Nowitzki is by far the best example - he plays way better when Dennis is not on the court).

His criticism against the coach was boneheaded. It is quite usual in europe to foul your opponent when you are up by three and there are about 20-24 seconds left. The reason the game went to overtime was the fact that Schroeder missed his first free throw attempt (and his last one against Spain which cost us the overtime).

When you sum up his play everyone has to admit that Schroeder is getting better and better and better. Turnovers will lower done as his age is going up. The only thing he needs to put real work in is his shot. Even though he trained with Kyle over the summer, it seems like his shot is as bad as ever (technically).

(Please excuse my bad language)

Thanks for contributing.
I hope my comments above didn't come off too critical. I am a big fan of what the kid can do. But a lot of the criticism he's received here and in Germany regarding immaturity and reckless/selfish play has been warranted.

I'd wondered how Dirk, a disciplined veteran, would mesh with Dennis whose play is inconsistent and inefficient at times. From what I've been able to tell, the adjustment was not an easy one

Dennis's attitude and his jump shot are the two biggest things stopping him from becoming a great player. Hopefully, our coaching staff can help get both of those improved moving forward so can he lead the Hawks and the German National team to glory.

PS Your English is fantastic. Much better than most of the American posters here. And leagues better than my German. :D

This sums up DS for me
And Dennis is making some boneheaded plays every game. Has like 2 flashy moves he tries to pull every game which ends up as turnovers or he get's blocked at the rim because of it.

He should have a big year, 3rd year in the system. Next season (2016-2017) is going to be interesting. They have to keep Teague and max him out and somebody else picks up Dennis.

http://www.spox.com/de/sport/ussport/nba/1510/Artikel/dennis-schroeder-zurueck-in-der-heimat-atlanta-hawks.html

Looks like he worked with Korver on his 3P shot and studied some Tony Parker videos to see how Splitter and Parker played the pick and roll.

He also said the Hawks are great and Atlanta is a beautiful city and everything is fine but he also said many people said he is ready to be a starting Point Guard in the NBA... Looks like you guys have to decide after the season who to trade to as I could see him asking for the starting spot or for a trade.

Yikes. Thanks for the head's up...

I think this deserves it's own thread.

In yet another big summer for Nintendo DS:

Schroder won’t play for Germany this summer

Dennis Schroder will not compete for Germany’s national team this summer, the German Basketball Federation announced Wednesday. Schroder will assume the starting point guard position for the Hawks next season after the team traded Jeff Teague this summer.

Schroder said previously that he intended to play for Germany in its quest to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games...[he] has played for Germany the past two summers in international qualifying tournaments. He has credited his time with the team in a development as an NBA player.

It appears with greater responsibility entrusted to him by the Hawks, it appears Schroder elected to give that team his commitment this summer.
Here

I assume he's using this time to instead prepare for duties as starting PG. This is encouraging, I think. Especially if it affords more time with D12.

Hawks assistant general manager Jeff Peterson has worked with the German national team as an assistant the past two summers with Schroder. He is unlikely to continue that role this summer with Schroder’s absence.
:-?

Did we send a handler (babysitter) to help oversee Dennis these past 2 summers?

Another article about our #1.

Can These Players Handle The Pressure?

Dennis Schroder, Point Guard, Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks made the transition to Schroder being their primary floor general early in the offseason after trading former All-Star Jeff Teague to the Indiana Pacers. While Teague’s departure had been speculated about for months, the question immediately now turns to whether Schroder is ready for the role of full-time starter.

Schroder was the first player selected after head coach Mike Budenholzer arrived in Atlanta. Schroder is Budenholzer’s guy. This is no secret and with Teague entering unrestricted free agency in 2017, the Hawks made the move early to avoid any type of in-season drama.

Next season, the Hawks will look entirely different with two-fifths of their starting lineup playing elsewhere (since All-Star Al Horford bolted to Boston as well). Schroder is a young point guard who will now be thrust into the role of trying to keep the new pieces in Atlanta glued together. Will he be up to the challenge? http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-am-can-these-players-handle-the-pressure/

Podcast interview from former Hawks beat Writer Sekou Smith with DS:

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Three years into his NBA career and one thing is clear, Dennis Schroder has arrived.

An exciting change-of-pace backup to All-Star Jeff Teague with the Atlanta Hawks, Schroder takes over for Teague now on a revamped Hawks team that traded Teague and lost All-Star center Al Horford to Boston in free agency. The Hawks new look does include hometown big man Dwight Howard, once the most dominant big man in the league.

Ask any fan or pundit and they’ll likely debate the biggest risk, Schroder moving into a starting role or the Hawks betting that Howard still has dominant big man juice in his body.

But know this, Schroder is convinced he’s ready for prime time. Hawks coach and team president Mike Budenholzer is also a believer. (Bud also wisely signed veteran Jarrett Jack this summer to serve as Schroder’s backup).

The results of these changes will determine just how wise a move it was to make these moves now. Will the Hawks remain among the Eastern Conference playoff elite? Will Schroder and Howard energize a unit that has done nothing but roll on Budenholzer’s watch?

Just a heads up, I have an article in the works that is entirely focused on Dennis Schröder. Still cleaning it up a bit but the piece should get published on Peachtree Hoops in a few days or so.

Dennis Schroder is entering the biggest season of his basketball career in 2016-17.

One glaring weakness in his game is his jump-shot. Schroder is a decent shooter until he eclipses 15-19 feet. According to NBA.com, his percentage drops from 43.8 percent from mid-range, to 34.8 percent from 20-24 feet.

From 25-29 feet, he shoots just 29.6 percent.

It seems that he is determined to turn this weakness into a strength.

A featured DS article posted on the Hawks website:

After Long Journey, Schröder Rewarded With Starting Role

The Atlanta Hawks will soon take the keys to the car and hand them over to Dennis Schröder. Schröder is now poised to become a full-time starter for the first time since he entered the NBA.

[In] his second season, Schröder averaged 10.0 points and 4.1 assists despite playing fewer than 20 minutes per game. Perhaps more importantly, his assist rate was up, his turnover rate was down, and he was constantly improving on defense.

The Hawks have an adjustment to make as they incorporate Schröder...into the starting lineup. The biggest concern with regard to the offense is how Schröder himself will fare with his jump shot.

Schröder has to make jumpers to coerce defenses into chasing him over the top of pick and rolls, instead of sitting back and playing under them. His speed and ability to use the rim are most advantageous when defenders have to defend him closely instead of retreating and waiting for him to come to them.
Here

Here's a list of players with whom Schröder played 200 or more minutes in the 2015-16 season. The Hawks outscored their opponents with each and every two-man combination in the list, but the ones near the top were especially effective.
