I Sports WebThree takeaways from the 2017-2018 season for the Atlanta Hawks
John Collins was a steal in the 2017 NBA Draft
...the 20-year old big man contributed immediately due to his athleticism and shooting touch that translates perfectly to the current NBA. After beginning the year as a bench player, Collins moved into the starting lineup and posted quality numbers, including 15.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per 36 minutes.
Collins even had better stats than both Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, who were the first two selections in the draft. He averaged more points per game and shot a higher percentage from the field and from three-point range than both Fultz and Ball. Overall, Collins appears to be a complete player and has a bright future in the NBA.
The Hawks need more offensive weapons
The Hawks were one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA, a league where scoring is a priority. The Hawks averaged 103.4 points per game, which ranks 25th out of 30 NBA teams. Only one player on the team averaged more than 15 points per game. The Hawks need to draft a guy that can create his own shot and has the potential to score at least 20 points per game with their first pick in the next draft.
Dennis Schroder is not a #1 option
Schroder is the only player on the Hawks that can score the ball consistently. However, it is obvious that he is not a future superstar and number-one option for an NBA team. He would complement a superstar very well, but he cannot carry a franchise on his own.
Hopefully, some of the top prospects like DeAndre Ayton, Luka Doncic, and others can provide that kind of franchise-altering talent and the Hawks can select them in the 2018 NBA Draft this summer.
