The Hawks made a couple moves to fill out their roster ahead of training camp.

They brought in Cole Aldrich, a veteran journeyman who has played for six different NBA teams. Aldrich was one of the lucky men who got overpaid due to the salary cap spike a few years ago, but he was waived by the Timberwolves in late June. Aldrich’s contract is non-guaranteed, and he will be battling it out with Thomas Robinson in camp.

The Hawks also brought in a local kid in RJ Hunter. If you do not remember him, he was the Georgia State star and son of head coach Ron Hunter. Together, they were one of the best stories in college basketball a few years ago. Hunter’s NBA career has not been fruitful though. Hunter was a first round pick in 2015 but has been waived by three teams since.

T.C.B we currently have 15 guaranteed contracts plus our 2 two GL slots are filled, so unless a trade happens or a guy like Hamilton is waived, chances are he ends up signing to our GL squad.

Well it happen. Its an ok move, but the Hawks are loaded now with Shooting Guards

Bazemore
DeAndre Bembry
Kevin Huerter
Justin Anderson
Vince Carter

Then you have Tyler Dorsey who is a combo more of a SG and now RJ.

I wonder if Baze will be traded soon or if the Hawks will hold onto him until the trade deadline.

Bembry, JAnderson and Carter are all listed as SF. Huerter is not sure. Lin could play some 2 tho.

OTOH, seems like some of the elite cream of the crop of the remaining camp deal FAs are lining up to come here, that's kinda cool, even if it might not do/mean anything.

You also forgot to list Prince as another one of the Hawks' wing players. So 9 total.

I'm rooting for RJ Hunter to make the roster. Local kid who became a Georgia State hero during the NCAA Championship.

That'd be nice, he just needs to get more muscle and play better D.

Is there any roster spots open tho? 2way?

Anyone knows what happened to his percentages in his junior year? Good teammates left?

The Hawks made a couple moves to fill out their roster ahead of training camp.

They brought in Cole Aldrich, a veteran journeyman who has played for six different NBA teams. Aldrich was one of the lucky men who got overpaid due to the salary cap spike a few years ago, but he was waived by the Timberwolves in late June.

I think Aldrich was a good signing, and I expect him to stick. His contract was considered one of the few good values at the time it was signed, and it was widely believed that he took a discount to return to his hometown Minnesota with his family. He had just finished a surprising run with the Clippers where he had ended the season 4th in the NBA in DRPM. However, with Thibs giving KAT (who’s never missed a game) a ton of minutes, and the remaining going to well-paid Gorgui Dieng, Aldrich rarely had any opportunity to get on the floor. It’s hard to know who he is after two years, but he is certainly worth an invite.

The Hawks have 15 guaranteed contracts, Aldrich signed a camp deal, so unless a trade happens or someone like Hamilton is released, there isn't a spot available for Aldrich.

Back in Atlanta, can R.J. Hunter convert on one more long shot?

In 2015, Hunter made the most famous bucket in Georgia State history when his 35-footer with four seconds left completed an upset of No. 3-seed Baylor in the NCAA Tournament. It provided the keepsake scene of the first round.

On the other side of that game, leading Baylor with 18 points and 15 rebounds, was Taurean Prince. Today he is the forward who led the Hawks in minutes played last season. And Hunter is a training-camp extra whose next stop likely is the developmental G League.

“Thank you for reminding me,” Prince said with a thin smile when asked about the connection between the two. “He hit a shot in practice one time that brought memories, too.”

“We laughed about it. I don’t know how weird it is for him. I know it was kind of a crazy moment, so I don’t bring it up,” Hunter said. “I’ll let it die off for another couple years then we’ll really get into it.”
myAJC

Spoiler:
The Hawks brought Hunter home for a look, after his playing rights were acquired by their G League team, the Erie Bayhawks. After that, no guarantees, as the Hawks currently are at their limit in two-way contracts (which facilitate movement between the G League team and the big club).

At least as Hunter tries to jump-start his pro career, he now can enjoy familiar surroundings, with dad still coaching at the downtown university.

“I don’t take these opportunities for granted anymore. This is a short window for all of us. I’m just grateful to be around here and be at home and compete for a team that I grew up watching.”

“I came (to the Hawks facility) to shoot a couple nights ago, and they had a bunch of snacks out. Little things like that you appreciate when you’re gone, and the G League makes you grind for that.”

“I came in as a rookie, and I thought it was all owed to me. I got humbled really quickly,” he said.

“The G League has been huge for me, in that I’ve played well and I’m grateful to be here,” Hunter continued. “Every opportunity just means two times more. I’m two times more focused about it because I know this doesn’t happen often.

“When I came in (the NBA) I absolutely took it for granted. I’m not saying I was cocky or arrogant, but I thought I deserved it. It’s not like that. We’re all grateful to be here, and it’s not normal to be that blessed. I had to realize that and go through those changes to figure that out.

“I’m just looking for an opportunity. And I think this is a good one.”

Meh, I'm not rooting against Hunter or anything but I've never seen him as an NBA player. Kinda slow(ish), one-dimensional.

If y'all want an ATL guy to root for, root for MGH to get acquired. He's a guy that could actually help us.

What's that? Nah, I'm not biased.

Well .... I might be biased but I ain't wrong.

Yikes, things have fallen apart quickly in Chicago. I am relieved we didn't follow through on my desires to sign this guy.

(Though I wouldn't be against a trade of Bazemore for Jabari.)

Bulls forward Jabari Parker refuses comment after being moved to a bench role

Fresh off back-to-back dismal looking performances against Milwaukee and then Charlotte, Hoiberg and his coaching staff went back into the lab to try and reinvent an offense that was looking too stagnant and a defense that looked uninspired. What they came up with was on full display in Wednesday’s 104-89 win over the Pacers at the United Center, as Zach LaVine and Justin Holiday led them with 22 points each.

A positive showing on many fronts. Well, unless your name is Jabari Parker.

Parker again was less than stellar, scoring 11 points on 4-for-12 shooting, and did so in an unfamiliar role off the bench. Not the usual spot for the No. 2 overall pick from the 2014 draft, and the same player the Bulls paid $40 million for over the next two seasons.

Parker’s feelings about it? Those remained unknown, especially since he was one of the first players out of the locker room and declined to speak to the media.

Hoiberg issued a warning to his team at the start of camp that starting spots would have to be won through competition. Before the win over Indiana, Parker wasn’t exactly grabbing that spot – shooting a combined 4-for-23 in the previous two losses, and 13-for-49 (26.5 percent) for the entire preseason.

But the million question remains – does Hoiberg keep Parker a bench player?

“Nothing is set in stone right now,’’ Hoiberg said.

You gonna learn to listen to me, bro. I didn't think he'd be this bad but his struggles don't surprise me.

Hey, where's the hourly Wendall Carter update? I've missed hearing about the monster numbers he's been putting up.

It's pronounced Wendell.

And check the 2018 Draft Thread.
