Re: Game Thread: Hawks @ Cleveland (again?) -- 10/30
This team is so much better with Trae Young handling the ball and running the offense than Kent Bazemore but Bazemore apparently doesn't see that. It's frustrating seeing him get the ball and go right to a weak drive or to dribble into a short shot-clock, especially when Young was feeling it like he was tonight.

Trae was excellent tonight. Confident, poised. He almost seemed angry that he had to carry load since Prince and Bazemore were bumbling around. Those two killed the team with their knuckleheaded turnovers. This loss was directly attributable to Prince and Bazemore trying to make plays but just causing turnovers.

Lots of sloppy turnovers tonight. Hope this team takes better care of the ball next game.

This team needs JC back to save them in the worst way. Maybe teams have figured out how to stop Trey, Baze and Prince.
Let Len score some, it's no big deal. He was 9 for 9 but I understand they don't want to go to him that much. Kudos to Len bouncing back, in danger of losing his starting position.
Outrebounded badly by TT, Poythress would have helped, he might be back next game.
Almost got Vinsanity, hope it happens soon.
Finally good games by Huerter and Lin, just the beginning!

Thanks for the honesty.MorbidHEAT wrote:My dislike for Lin started during Linsanity. It was absurd. It's probably irrational dislike at this point, but man he gets on my nerves. He's been tearing us up though.

This is kind of like the perfect game.
Trae has a good and efficient game.
Trae outplays fellow rookie Sexton.
Hawks get the L and helps with draft position.
Cavs get the W and helps with the Hawks stealing their draft pick next year.

ESPN RecapThe Cavaliers played unselfishly, aggressively and together for the first time this season.
They almost always do for Larry Drew.
Cleveland came in as the NBA's only winless team, and Lue paid the price for club's slow start in its first season since LeBron James left the Cavs for the second time.
But with Drew serving as their "acting" coach while he tries to get the team to restructure his contract, the Cavs played a complete game -- Cleveland had seven players in double figures -- and avoided their first 0-7 start since 1995-96.
George Hill and rookie Collin Sexton scored 17 apiece, and Tristan Thompson had 13 rebounds for Cleveland.
Rookie Trae Young scored 24 and Alex Len 22 for the Hawks. Young scored a season-high 35 against the Cavs on Oct. 21, wrecking their home opener.
But Atlanta made 22 turnovers and the Hawks' defense was poor in the second half when the Cavs scored 78 points.

Re: Game Thread: Hawks @ Cleveland (again?) -- 10/30
From The Athletic:
Hawks-Cavaliers observations: Cleveland’s odd defensive strategy, Taurean Prince’s struggles continue
Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce summed up Atlanta’s 136-114 loss to Cleveland succinctly: “Nothing to be excited about with that one (Tuesday).”
Suffice to say, Cleveland is a mess right now and entered the game Tuesday against Atlanta winless. The Hawks couldn’t take advantage of the Cavaliers’ dysfunction and dropped to 2-5 on the season.
Here are some observations on the Hawks’ performance:
-Cleveland’s strategy on defense when Trae Young was Atlanta’s primary ball-handler was weird. The Cavs were trapping Young and forcing him to find the open man, which would be OK if he wasn’t a capable passer. The problem is Young is an excellent passer, so that led to plenty of open looks for the Hawks in the first half. Here’s one example of where it worked perfectly for Young and the Hawks.
-I liked what I saw from the Hawks’ second unit of Jeremy Lin, Bembry, Kevin Huerter, Omari Spellman and Dewayne Dedmon. Check out this play with Lin running the floor on the fastbreak after Dedmon’s block.
In the play above, his pass is a little off target as Huerter has to reach to his left a bit, reset and then shoot, but it worked in the Hawks’ favor.
With Lin at the point, every player except Miles Plumlee had a plus rating. The starters were all in the negatives with the team trailing by one.

I missed the game, so review from boxscore only.
78 points given up in a half .
Starting wings with 9 combined turnovers and shot a combined 6/20. They are struggling doing way too much.
Team shot 64% from the freethrow line (really? Hit those freebies fellas).
Trae with the efficient scoring night.
Seems like Len feared Dedmon taking his starting gig - he was a stat stuffer last night across the board.
We need to get Huerter taking more shots.
And finally:
The corpse of JLin came alive, just in time for Halloween.

Those two Taurean back-to-back turnovers were soul-crushing. They happened right after Taurean rolled his ankle, I wondered if they were related. But there were too many times last night where Taurean or Bazemore drove into 3 defenders and lost the ball, or tried a dribble drive and pass off that was telegraphed too easily and the defender jumped in and stole the ball.

Coach said Trae and Lin are the team's two facilitators and he'll run more PnR action with them. The team works best when it plays that way. Certainly, Prince and Baze aren't good at playmaking. Bembry can do some, but it should be secondary and he's not at his best when driving wildly into the paint into traffic when his teammates are wide open.
But ultimately, the Hawks score. Give up 78 points in a half isn't going to make for competitive games very often.

Taurean is a limited player, best suited as an elite 3 & D guy. Changing his role to ball handler/play maker isn't in his best interest. Using the way we utilized Demarre Carroll years ago is preferable. Back door cuts for layups when teams pay attention elsewhere. Move the ball, hit open jumpers, finish at the rim. He'd be stellar as a 4th option doing those things.
The AthleticPrince has struggled in his past three games. He’s 9-of-37 with 13 turnovers in those games, and he has been forcing too many shots when they’re just not there. He’s now shooting below 40 percent from the field and is rated as the Hawks’ only player who’s below average or worse, according to Synergy.
I don’t think there’s too much to worry about now, but as I said coming out of the Sixers game, the turnovers he has had have been sloppy lately. It makes sense when you look at his shooting numbers:Prince only scored nine points against Cleveland, and it’s going to be difficult for the Hawks to win many games if Prince doesn’t put up around 20 points per game. I said before the start of the season that I expected Prince to be the team’s leading scorer by the end of the season. I still expect that to happen, but it bares monitoring right now that he and the team are struggling when he’s handling the ball.
- when he’s been the ball-handler in pick-and-roll situations. He’s 6 of 19 in 22 possessions in those situations.
- In 15 isolation possessions, he has turned the ball over 20 percent of the time.
