After the first 2 picks, our draft was head scratching. We drafted a running back with 9 of the top 20 rated running backs left on the board...and he wasn't one of them.

Feeling like the Falcons are trying to emulate what the Colts did in revamp their O-Line last offseason. They invested heavily in the unit and went from allowing a league-high 56 sacks in 2017 to a league-low 18 sacks in 2018. While I don't think the improvement will be that drastic, Ryan should be seeing the ground a lot less this coming season.

On the offensive side of the ball, we made some...risky draft choices.

They didn't get the same quality of players though. Quinton Nelson is not in this draft class

My only question is........
can he get a 3rd and 1 when we need it most. No gimmick plays, just straight power run.

2019 Draft Grades for Every NFL Team

Atlanta Falcons

Image

Most Notable Pick: Kaleb McGary, OT, Washington (No. 31)

It certainly wasn't a flashy draft for the Atlanta Falcons, but it wasn't a complete disaster, either.

Yes, Atlanta reached a bit for first-round guard Chris Lindstrom (No. 14). But if he solidifies a spot on the offensive line for the next decade, who cares?

The same can be said of first-round tackle Kaleb McGary, who has the tools needed to play either guard or right tackle. His potential pro versatility makes trading back into Round 1 for him a fine move.

Protecting quarterback Matt Ryan was a significant issue in 2018; he was sacked 42 times. Grabbing two linemen with starting potential was smart, even if Atlanta overdrafted to do so. The roster features enough talent that reaching to fill a massive need isn't going to doom the Falcons.

The rest of Atlanta's draft class consists primarily of projects and depth players, though former Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield (No. 111) has enough athletic upside to eventually develop into a star.

Overall Grade: C

I think our first two picks will have more to say about that. Our backfield is always getting blown up on short yardage.

At least Chris Lindstrom sounds like a cool name for an NFL interior lineman. That counts right?

I don’t know about that. We addressed our weakest units at the top with OL & Secondary. We picked up a bigger back after struggling for 2-3 years in short yardage situation. The Quinn & Dimi draft duo has been shockingly good in their time..

This was a B to B+ draft to me. We almost certainly will be better on the offensive line and that is the difference between a mediocre offense and a record setting offense with the tools we have. We drafted two high potential players in Cominsky and the DB from OSU. I’ve been reading around TATF that Sheffield could get looks at FS which would really minimize his weaknesses. Cominsky looks like he could be big time for us at base end and nickle DT. Both are amazing athletes with a ton of potential. Miller and Ollison add players to both units that had key losses over the off season. All in all..I can’t find anything wrong with our strategy. We made a HUGE investment in our offensive line. That’s the kind of move that can extend Ryan’s career.
