The first and second rounds...
Explain?
Oh, ummm.....
Spoiler:
For the second round...we had a handful of picks and sold/traded away each of them.
We then traded our way back into the 2nd round for Fernando. That seemed weird short-sighted that we needed to jump back into the same range we already were slated to be in when a guy that we liked fell that far. Why not just wait and trade out on draft night?
Eric Paschall has a skill set we need at a thin position and was drafted @ #41 by GSW...with one of the aforementioned 2nd rounders we sold off. He could have been a huge use to us this season and a great trade chip in the future. (He also could have helped Omari's development, having an old college teammate with him in the pros.)
First round...I think we overpaid for D Hunter. He fits a need and slots in well with Trae and Collins. But going into the draft with 6 picks (three in the top-20) and coming out with what we currently have...makes me wonder.
Particularly with Jaxson Hayes, Tyler Herro, PJ Washington, Matisse Thybulle, Brandon Clarke already looking uber-productive at positions of need.
NOTE: The Cleveland pick being thrown in is slightly worse. We were unlikely to get a 1st rounder next summer. But those 2nd rounders are likely to be attractive picks in the 30s in 2021 and 2022 -- the double draft year when the one and done rule is disbanded.
Using 100% hindsight -- Staying pat and drafting Reddish, Brandon Clarke, Matisse Thybulle, Bruno Fernando, Eric Paschall and Bol Bol would have given us an abundance of depth, projects, defense, shooting to cycle through the G-League and include in future trades.
I think we'd have a (slightly) better record now and have more assets for an aggressive trade moving forward.
