It takes a maturity and discipline to focus enough to put forth 100% effort on every play. For kids who are used to getting by based on superior skill and/or athletic ability this can be quite a shock to the system. But, most pros figure it out sooner rather than later. But, it is definitely something that young players can struggle with initially.

Games like tghe other night go a long way towards teaching young players how hard they need to play every possession.

Also coming off 3 games in 4 nights.

Folks gotta stop believing in the myth of coaches giving rah-rah, 'win one for tha gipper' speeches. Not reality. This ain't hollywood.

ETA. Not absolving clp of all blame. He's got room to improve. Just, it ain't his fault every time something goes poorly.

...do you get the sense that Lloyd Pierce will be the fall guy for this?

Chris Kirchner wrote:Understandably, when the Hawks hired Lloyd Pierce, they wanted someone who saw firsthand what Philadelphia did when the Sixers were going through “The Process.” Pierce was going to be the guy to help turn Young and Collins into Atlanta’s two-man show. But the problem from talking with Young and Collins for two seasons is they want to win, and they have become annoyed that people discount their stats, particularly Young.

I know that there were many frustrating moments throughout this season for the entire locker room and not just the two best players. I also know that the relationship between Young and Pierce isn’t strong.

I do think Lloyd is a fine coach, and it would be premature to not see what he could do with a better roster...but it’s hard knowing if he’s going to be the coach of the Hawks when and if they reach that contender-level in the East.

Spoiler:
John Hollinger wrote:Pierce has the Hawks playing an open, modern offense and has been willing to try things within the course of games. Sometimes Atlanta needed to try things and see them fail to move forward...At times, it did seem a little too haphazard. That said, he’s done a lot of things to maximize Trae in particular. it’s certainly odd for Young to look sideways at an offensive solar system that has him as the sun.

My best guess is that Pierce gets another year, with the weirdness of this season likely putting a damper on coaching changes, in general, this offseason.
