:dontknow:

Okongwu's entire appeal as a player is in his ability to protect the rim and guard in space. He's in the mold of Jaren Jackson Jr., Evan Mobley, Chet Holmgren.

If we don't believe he can do these two things at a high level, we should move on from him.

(FTR, I do believe he can do these things at an NBA All-Defense Level.)

McMillan modeled Okongwu's early development after Bam.

Onyeka even compares himself to Bam, reportedly.

Key word is Bam lite. The ceilings between the comparisons are just too wide.

He's always at risk of catching a foul on screens, even DHOs. Foul trouble and turnovers in one possession are double whammys the team can go w/o.

Serious observation:

Okongwu, when healthy, might be a better defender than Evan Mobley.

Can't disagree. Mobley's length is a factor in his defensive profile more than anything.

I need to see Okongwu as the full time starter before I determine he can't be the FT starter. This should have been the season. My fear is leadership will move OO, on a value contract, before he ever gets a chance to show what he can do over a full season.

But we saw flashes. And he pairs great with Jalen (both on and off the court).

I'd like to see more!!!

I concur.
It needed to happen this season. This team just seems to do things all wrong. In four seasons OO has started in 36 games. While he's only 23 years old, like you, I believe he needed to start more. Especially since we used the 6th overall pick on him.

I agree but Okongwu just doesn't have the body to be a pro athlete

OO is absolutely a starter caliber player, just needs to be paired with the right front court partner and developping more shooting ability could make him Horfordesque with better athleticism

Okongwu on the upper right of this graph. Clint on the lower left. Perfect metaphor for their trajectories thus far.

OO in the midst of the best Centers in the world on this chart. (Jokic, Wemby, AD, Chet, Sengun, Embiid)
BRING HIM BACK AS STARTER!!!!

Okongwu is fearless!!!!

He's better than Alex Sarr is...for now.

Strong enough to meet All Star Centers at the rim.

Quick enough to block guards without fouling.

Onyeka deserves at least a season as starter.

Not sure why people are resistant on having Sarr and OO in there causing havoc. Regarding this vid, notice all the transition points he creates and the consistent bad poa defense from DJM. Sarr in there with JJ and OO

manning the paint and a perimeter defender like Castle or Carter with Trae you just have a really nice setup.

They can definitely share the court occasionally...situation dependent.

But all of OO, Sarr and JJ as a FT starting *unit is less than ideal.
