From 2016-2017 season:

...this Spurs team has nine players who’ve played in the D-League. Five of those players are in their first season in San Antonio. Murray, Dedmon and Forbes are three names on that list.

They all came up through the Spurs D-League affiliate and learned the proper, Spurs way of playing basketball.

This can't be overstated how effective this approach has been.

That approach doesn't work unless you already have HOFers and all-stars on your roster.

Seems to be working out pretty well this season. Parker, Kawhi, Duncan are all out...yet the SAS train keeps churning along.

From summer 2016:
He's good. He's young. He's got a lot to learn just like all of us do at that age," Simmons said. "But I see some potential in him for sure. He's quick and athletic for sure. Everything else will come, especially within this system; learning how to play, positioning, and all that. There's definitely potential with the athleticism and the ballhandling."

Just days after the Spurs drafted Murray they brought him to San Antonio to work with shooting coach Chip Engelland, the man responsible for Kawhi Leonards ascent as a sharpshooter. Murray and Engelland spent the next week and a half working as the summer league approached with the rookie throwing up countless shots.

From the 2016-2017 season:
Spurs Continue Homegrown Ways with Dejounte Murray

It looks like most of that growth will come in Austin, Texas, home of the NBA Development League's Austin Spurs (which Spurs Sports and Entertainment owns and operates). Murray has already played three games there, and Popovich told reporters during a presser that preceded the Spurs' Nov. 25 game in Boston that Murray should expect many more trips up Interstate 35 to Texas' capital city.

"He’s just really young," Popovich said, according to the San Antonio Express-News' Jeff McDonald. "He’s 20. He’s a total blank slate right now. He’ll have a bright future, but he needs to play. He needs to play 35 minutes a night and learn and make mistakes and not worry about them. His future is ahead of him."
Bleacher Report

Gregg Popovich has officially issued the film challenge to rookie Dejounte Murray. It’s the same challenge given to and accepted by Kawhi Leonard.

Study the greats. Incorporate the knowledge. Improve your game.

While some are calling for Murray, 20, to see more game-time, Popovich is letting Murray develop and mature at a comfortable pace, unlike what happened when Parker arrived on the scene at age 19. Popovich threw Parker into the action right away as the team needed to identify if he truly was the future point guard.

“Dejounte has got a lot more time to ease into this,” said Popovich. “Tony came and I was giving him the basketball after four games I believe. … It was his ball and he was going to run the team. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to coddle him.”

That 1 DL game that Green played in for the Spurs did wonders for his career
Cleveland Cavaliers (2009–2010)[edit]
The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Green as the 46th overall pick of the 2009 NBA draft. After he played in 20 games in his rookie year with the Cavaliers, the team waived Green at the beginning of the next season.
San Antonio Spurs (2010–present)[edit]
Green was subsequently picked up by the San Antonio Spurs on November 17, 2010.[7] The Spurs waived him six days later after he appeared in two games.[8] In January 2011, Green was acquired by the Reno Bighorns of the NBA D-League. He averaged 20 points, a team high, and 7.5 rebounds in 16 games with the Bighorns.[9] The Spurs signed Green again in March 2011,[10] assigned him to the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League on April 2, and then recalled him on April 3.[11]

Green never played another game in the DL.

I don't think that Dedmon played for the Spurs DL team - he was on other teams DL roster though.

There was no playing time for Murray with TP and Mills to start the season. After Parker's injury he didn't see another DL game.

I honestly don't know what you're talking about:

Read on Twitter

Murray was assigned to the D-League's Austin Spurs on Sunday.

Murray made a spot start last Wednesday against the Pacers while Tony Parker sat out with a quad injury, but the rookie had essentially dropped out of the rotation in the subsequent two contests with Parker healthy, logging four total minutes.

He's been a standout performer at Austin all season, and will have an opportunity to get some extended run in the D-League team's game Sunday against the Salt Lake City Stars.

In addition to getting NBA game-time under his belt, Murray has played 15 games for the San Antonio Spurs D-league affiliate, averaging an impressive 17.2 points, 6.3 assists, 7.9 rebounds and two steals per game.

Murray is obviously a project, but for a 20 year-old player who needs time and support to develop his skills, there is no better place than San Antonio.

Once has to question that approach particularly since both Dedmon and Green never "came up" through the Spurs DLeague affiliate..... They "came up" through the Warriors. Dedmon never played a single game for the Spurs affiliate and Green had all of 1 game in Austin, maybe they gave him the crash course.

I had too many windows opened and looked at the wrong player games. Tony went out in the playoffs.
My point still stands regarding Green and Dedmon and guys who play in the Dl go because they have established vets in front of them.

Fair enough.

You got me there.

But are we really gonna argue that the Spurs haven't made player development, including through their own G League affiliate, a priority for years?

Is the hatred for Jamaaliver really that strong to make that argument?

[Last season], this team had nine players who’ve played in the D-League. Five of those players are in their first season in San Antonio. Murray, Dedmon and Forbes were three names on that list.

The former D-Leaguers have all started their careers in different ways. Dejounte Murray and Kyle Anderson are both former first-round picks.

Cry me a river with the faux persecution complex. Maybe people shouldn't come up with lies at every chance to toot the D/G league up as if it's this magical place where NBA players are born.

:nonono: Again, no one is de-crying the use of the GLeague. It's the way, how and why players are assigned.

Honestly I felt like if Noel had been in late in the Hawks game we might not have won. He played 3 minutes in the 4th. Seemed weird he wasn't playing. We had 5 offensive rebounds in the fourth and Dennis scored 10 points mostly on drives to the basket.

And for the record, it wasn't a lie. I misread SAN for San Antonio in a Dedmon G-League box score. It stood for Santa Cruz. A mistake on my part.

Again, the point I was getting at is that SAS has long used their G League franchise as a tool for development of young, cheap talent.

Kyle Anderson and Dejounte Murray are the two most recent examples.

I hope we start doing the same, very soon.

(Josh Longstaff needs the resume bullets.)

I saw the Spurs last game and Dejounte Murray is a baller. How do the Spurs do it? They draft around 27-30 every year and always find a stud and develop him. Develop develop but Murray had the body coming in that was made for bball.

The Spurs have a checklist of traits they look for in a player and more often than not they stick to it regardless of consensus.
They also have great scouts and they have voices with Pop and RC Buford - they are the ones initially tagging these guys and presenting them to RC and Pop.

Hmmm I agree with the latter part about Pop and RC cola but I have to question the first part about checklist of traits just because they've actually made a wide range of picks with players that had vastly different skills. I mean Tony Parker is almost the anti Dejounte...Although I will say that getting David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard fits in with guys are endless workers with great discipline and no off court issues.

Ps There is some **** at the airport talking way too loud about his bull business and apparently the entire world needs to know about it...his voice is soooooo high pitched and whiney...STFU guy!

Seems like a typical tactic against RFA's that accept their QO. Teams punish them for taking hold of their own future by trying to drive down their value.
