Most thought it would cost our 2 top ten picks plus #17, a future 1st and 2nds (see trade board talk b4 the draft)

The cost was 8, 17, and 3 2nds especially in context of what we got for the Trae Luka swap.

The Hawks gave up a king’s ransom for De’Andre Hunter. They traded two first-round picks (no. 8 and no. 17), an early second-round pick (no. 35), and a heavily protected first-rounder in 2020, and they absorbed the final season of Solomon Hill’s contract (later flipped for Chandler Parsons and a Plumlee) to move up four spots and take Hunter at no. 4.

The NBA player Hunter most resembles is probably Harrison Barnes, which is not a great value for someone taken no. 4 overall, especially considering the number of picks the Hawks gave up to get him. In most situations, Hunter would need to become an All-Star-caliber player to justify all that the Hawks gave up to get him.

That’s because it’s us. If it were the Schmelts or the Knocks or the Lackers, then the price was justified.

NBA mock draft: LaMelo Ball is now a real No. 1 pick contender

Image

It's time to start taking LaMelo Ball seriously -- possible No. 1 pick seriously -- as an NBA draft prospect.

That was the main takeaway from a four-day trip to Tasmania, home of the NBL Blitz, the Australian and New Zealand basketball league's annual preseason tournament.

Ball looked like an NBL MVP candidate. He put up an impressive 19-point, 13-rebound, 7-assist performance against the defending champion Perth Wildcats. Reigning Defensive player of the year Damian Martin tried in vain to slow Ball but was completely unable to phase the 18-year-old. Ball showed similar sparks of potential in earlier preseason contests, most notably dropping 21 points on 11 shots against South East Melbourne. He has moved up to No. 3 in the new ESPN mock draft.

The feedback from NBA scouts was nearly unanimous.

"He reminds me of Luka Doncic," another scout said. "Just in terms of his size, his feel and his creativity."

NBA teams also were impressed by the way Ball controlled the game, his improved shot selection and mechanics, and his body language.

Speaking of which, why is it so damn hard to get registered on that site?

I have no idea what jersey# Dominique wore...

Even though I extended an invitation, somehow the idea of you showing your mugg there unnerves me. Why is that?

Maybe you've been off in the wilderness too long. Can you even fit into civilized society anymore?

You extended an invitation to Brad? Were you drunk? The guy wants to flip Collins for Simmons. Comoooon man. Plus he wouldn’t like it in the other land anyways, he’d freckle or something.

What? It's not like I told WhatAboutBob.

Agree though that Ms. CleOliver would likely not like it over there. He doesn't like it when his opinions get challenged.

It seems like there is no consensus #1 this year so it's not inconceivable. But that's not the issue.

The issue is CleOliver constantly pushing for us to draft a point guard/ball dominant guy when that clearly wouldn't fit us. What gives, 'mal?

In the debut of our NBA Draft Prospect Rankings for 2020, North Carolina freshman Cole Anthony is No. 1, narrowly edging out Georgia freshman Anthony Edwards, international player RJ Hampton, Memphis freshman James Wiseman and Arizona freshman Nico Mannion. The combination of Anthony's scoring, handles and sheer athleticism earned him an edge over the competition, and he has a chance to build that lead at Carolina where he figures to be the heir apparent to lottery pick guard Coby White in UNC's guard-friendly system.

Below that first tier of stars in our rankings is a pair of guards who this season may be the most polarizing: Kentucky's Tyrese Maxey and Illawarra's LaMelo Ball. Both were top-10 in my way-too-early 2020 NBA Mock Draft published earlier this summer, and even after a recent report from ESPN claiming Ball could be a No. 1 pick contender, he remains just outside the top five for me. But at 6-foot-6 and with his combination of scoring and play-making, he's a name to keep tabs on as a potential mover this season in the NBL.

This might be the best PG class since the Steph, BJ, Lawson, Teague, Jrue and Rubio class.

Deni Avdija Is Someone [NBA] Fans Should Become Familiar With

Image

there is one player that [American basketball] fans should become immediately familiar with - Maccabi Tel Aviv sensation Deni Avdija.

The do-it-all forward that plays with confidence that borders on arrogant, Avdija backs it up with his play every time on the floor. One time against Spain in the 2019 FIBA U20 European Championship Avdija waved goodbye to the Spanish bench while yelling, “adios” in the closing moments of the game. He finished with 23 points, 7 assists and 3 blocks that game and took home tournament MVP honors. This performance also helped solidify Avdija’s case as a top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

“Deni right now is a poor man's Luka Doncic, but that can change very quickly this season and bring his game up to yet the next level,” said Josh Halickman, founder of SportsRabbi.com. “Doncic was more advanced at this stage of his career, but if Deni is given the keys he will also see his game improve and evolve.”

The reason why Avdija is compared to Doncic, or rather a poor man’s Doncic, is due his natural gifts offensively. Close to 6’9”, Avdija possesses excellent ball skills in the open floor. He has the ability to pass on the move, seemingly having eyes in the back of his head and has a great feel overall for the game. He’s also shown an overall acumen on the defensive side of the ball with plenty of potential to grow.
