:o

Garbage take. (Though I probably would still take Cam Whitmore, Bufkin was not a reach at #15 and I do not believe the coaching staff regrets their choice.)

Every NBA Team's Biggest Regret This Season

Atlanta Hawks: Kobe Bufkin at No. 15

Nothing the Atlanta Hawks did this season will leave them wanting a do-over more than the Dejounte Murray deal they swung in 2022, but another crack at the No. 15 pick would be nice.

Kobe Bufkin played 17 games and totaled 81 points in his rookie season, and that's with Atlanta losing guard Trae Young late in the year, which theoretically should have opened up backcourt minutes. Still only 20, the Michigan product has ample time to justify his draft slot. But considering who came off the board immediately after Bufkin, it's going to take a pretty significant boost in performance to make the Hawks feel better.

Keyonte George (No. 16) looks like the point guard of the future for the Utah Jazz, Jaime Jaquez Jr. (No. 18) was probably third in unofficial Rookie of the Year polls through the first half of the season, Brandin Podziemski (No. 19) is likely to be an All-Rookie first-teamer and Cam Whitmore (No. 20) has shown enough flashes of scoring punch and athleticism to validate many draft boards that had him in the top five.

The draft is rarely easy, but the Hawks made it look harder than necessary by reaching for Bufkin and passing on prospects that had higher ceilings and floors.

Kobe's strength as a scorer clearly based on his interior finishing.

Once he gets that 3-pt shot cleaned up, he seems ready to become a regular part of the rotation very soo after.

Is Kobe already capable of this level of defensive intensity?

This is rough. I was expecting a huge jump from Kobe and him using that positive momentum to secure a rotation spot this Fall.

Ummm...

Last summer, Kobe had never been to Atlanta. A year later, his relatives are driving the mean streets for extra cash?

:dontknow:

Would have to think he's secured the backup PG role at least already. Sitting him thru SL seems more precautionary if they're confident he will be ready for TC. He killed the G league, and showed enough flashes down the stretch. If anything, Kobe would've just dominated SL. I don't think he had anything to prove. Only needed to showcase what's to come/expect this year.

I would agree that this Hawks Summer League Team needed Kobe more than Kobe needed this Summer League.
But it would have been nice to give him on ball reps and have him finally show out on a featured stage after struggling mightily last summer league.

I am worried about his durability with such a small frame and frequent injuries as a pro.

NOTE: I'm still not convinced Kobe is best suited as a pure PG. He was a combo guard in college who effectively covered PG minutes in his final season.

Even his biggest games in the G-League last season featured more scoring from him than pure facilitation.

He's had injuries going back to his Senior year of high-school, college, nba rookie season and now year 2.

Yikes!! I was unaware of that extensive injury history.

I was a big fan of Bufkin during the 2023 Draft season. And I do like him and see serious 2-way upside in his long term future.
(Is there a better two way player on this roster right now than Kobe?)

But those frequent injuries are a definite concern. I also believe Cam Whitmore was a better value at #15 in last year's draft.

Okongwu and Kobe both may be best suited for roles as super subs due to frequent injuries.
