Is Capela still dealing with his achilles. Hopefully this break has helped him with that, and he can flash like he did last season. If you can trade him among others outside of OO and Trae for AD, those three is who I'm building the team around.

Huerter

It will cost a lot for someone that is almost injured every season. LAK got lucky they had a full roster two years ago while every teams were missing players. If they want to trade him, it will be only because of his injuries, so why another would want that?

I've been swatting the idea of acquiring AD all over the place. LAL got lucky the shutdown happened. The 4 months or w/e off is the only reason they were healthy enough to win in the bubble. What we're seeing this year is their new normal. Patching Lebron and AD up enough to simply be present while they lose games.

Them and NO (Zion) need to do the right thing and trade their guys while they still can.

My observations of the bubble is that Lebron did a great job keeping his team focus, but he also played his own mind games with the media, all of the racial tension, and used the media completely.

Guys like Paul George didn't handle it as well because he was away from his lady and two daughters at the time. He now has a son.

Now, the Lakers are a circus, or have been since Lebron joined them, but that's not being a focal point. Pointing blame and shade at Russ, the coaching staff, and others is protecting Lebron.

As far as New Orleans goes, I agree with you, and that Zion must be moved. He doesn't have a future there. We possibly have the pieces to make a trade happen but I truly believe the old reports that he wants to play with RJ in New York.

I don't hate this.

I'd also insist on 2nd year PG Killian Hayes in this trade, too.

Offseason Trade Ideas for NBA's Bottom Dwellers

Detroit Pistons

Image

Detroit Pistons Receive: G/F Kevin Huerter, F De'Andre Hunter

Atlanta Hawks Receive: F Jerami Grant

Although the Pistons chose to hold on to Grant at the trade deadline, keeping him into the 2022-23 season should only lower his trade value on an expiring contract.

Detroit should once again canvas the league, looking for packages that would bring back young players and/or draft picks while moving Grant to a franchise where he can win immediately and still play a big offensive role.

Atlanta would be an intriguing destination. Although the Hawks sit at just 30-32 overall this season, adding a high-level defender and multilevel scorer like Grant to a core of Trae Young, John Collins, Clint Capela, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Onyeka Okongwu and others would help push Atlanta toward the top of the East.

For Detroit, Hunter and Huerter are both 24 or younger and bring a blend of upside mixed with a few seasons of experience. Hunter is a multipositional defender who's shooting a career-high 37.4 percent from three this season and can start next to Saddiq Bey in the Pistons frontcourt.

Huerter gives Cade Cunningham a 6'7" sniper to play next to in the backcourt, one who can also handle the ball and create for others. A new starting lineup of Cunningham, Huerter, Bey, Hunter and Isaiah Stewart gives Detroit a strong foundation to build upon.
Bleacher Report

The Oregon native enjoyed a breakout 2020-21 campaign with the Pistons and then captured a gold medal as part of Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics.

Grant has continued to make an across-the-board impact by averaging 19.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1 steals in 39 games this season. He's shooting just 41.4 percent from the field, though.

NBA Offseason Trades for League's Most Disappointing Teams

Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks

Image

New York Knicks Receive: C Clint Capela

Atlanta Hawks Receive: G/F Alec Burks, C Nerlens Noel, 2022 second-round pick

Two of the NBA's most disappointing teams help each other out in this first proposal, with Capela solidifying a shaky center position for the Knicks while the Hawks improve their wing defense and clear the way for Onyeka Okongwu to start.

Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks current starting center, will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, so New York doesn't have the right to match any offers he'll receive. The 23-year-old has played well enough to warrant a starting job (8.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 77.1 field goal percentage in his 25.1 minutes), but hasn't become the elite defender and developing scorer the Knicks would have hoped for at this point.

Trading for Capela, 27, gives them a far better option at center, one who's on a reasonable three-year, $61.1 million deal moving forward. He's one of the NBA's best rebounders and is holding opponents to 5.0 percent shooting under their regular success rates from within six feet.

The Hawks only agree to trade Capela after seeing second-year center Okongwu's growth this season in a backup role. The 21-year-old was the No. 6 overall pick in 2020 and put up 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks on 67.6 percent shooting in six starts this season, showing flashes of becoming an all-defense center at some point.

Atlanta ranks 27th overall in defense this season, so adding a veteran wing defender in Burks would be a nice addition to the rotation. Noel has struggled with injuries this season but is a low-cost backup center who can provide strong rim protection when healthy. Getting the Knicks' second-round pick in the deal should seal this for the Hawks.

Grant is at best a third option on a true championship team. I think it would be a mistake to pursue as a #1 option.

I've had the exact same thought about Gobert for the exact same package. And I've had the exact same concerns regarding his high salary and advanced age.

But Gobert has the size (and respect from the refs) to go toe-to-toe with Embiid, Giannis and Bam Adebayo without help. The best offensive player in the league + the best defensive player in the league would make a dynamic duo...

Questions to consider:
  • What becomes of Okongwu and Jalen Johnson if Gobert is manning the C position for 36 minutes a night?
  • Could we trade Gallinari and our 2022 1st rounder in place of Collins?
  • Would we need to acquire a true stretch-PF to play next to Rudy?
  • Could (should) Hunter play PF?
  • Mark Williams of Duke has an almost identical physical profile to Gobert, would we be better off with a rotation of Capela, Okongwo and Williams for half the cost of Gobert?

The way MIN play now, I don't see them moving KAT this summer as they have less expectation than UTA
My concern with Gobert is his contract because his contract begins to increase substantially. By the end of it he will be paid in the mid $40m range and he will be 33 years old.

He would be a solid addition for a back up. A little under-sized for SG and the less than 4 assists in 30 minutes is not very encouraging.

I think that I prefer Delon. Do we have bird rights on Delon?

I don't know what our cap situation will be this offseason. I guess we let Gallo go to save $15M.

Yeah I'm wary of overpaying to get that guy. He was seen as worse than Reddish as a rookie. Now, due to circumstances, he's been thrust in a featured role for GSW. Is he better or is he simply in a better role (more mins/shots)? He's played well, but that's a real question.

And do folks not understand this player could likely command an $18-25mil per year salary in free agency? Ain't no team paying that for backup PG/SG.

The overvaluing of other teams' players juxtaposed with the constant accusations that 'we' overvalue our players is such a weird thing 'round these parts. Sometimes it seems like the best thing a player can do, to be looked at favorably here, is not play for the Hawks.

With growing speculation that Utah is preparing to break up Donovan and Rudy Gobert, I'd strongly consider bringing in Rudy G as our new starting Center.

I would, however, decline to include Collins or Okongwu in that trade. JC's trade value is pretty low right now and OO will serve as a nice change of pace big man if teams try to go small and play Gobert back to the bench.

Clint + Gallinari + Huerter + Jalen Johnson + the Charlotte pick for Gobert and change is where I'd start the bidding.

Jazz gets a comparable starting Center without the baggage, salary cap relief, a young player with ujpside and a shooter in KH who seems like he'd thrive next to Conley and Mitchell.

We'd start Gobert, Collins, Hunter, Bogdanovic next to Trae and would suddenly have the size/strength to really bang inside against Miami, Toronto, Philly.

We'd still maintain a young core of Trae, Collins, OO and Hunter plus whoever we draft with the 2022 draft pick.

The team has already invested extensions to Capela and draft capital into OO to fortify the center spot. I'm not sure Gobert is the all in move to make.

Capela+Gallo+future draft pick is all that needs to be on the table. Spider is the one the team should target. Especially if you can get him to name Atl as one of his preferred landing places.

Gobert's contract is cost prohibitive, doubling Clint's salary for a what I think would be a minimal upgrade for the cost.

Agree on the first point, disagree on the second one. Mitchell is the one that UTA will keep just because of marketing impact, but they clearly better with onyl Gobert than with only Mitchell.

Agree one that, he's an overall upgrade IMO, but not upgrade that should cost so much more than Clint

You guys are correctly concerned with Gobert's huge salary. It is prohibitive. But I'd push back on Capela being anywhere near as impactful as Gobert.

RG is the most physically dominant defensive big man in the league, akin to this generation's Mutombo. 5x 1st Team All Defense selection. 4x All NBA team selection. 3x DPOY selection...He is a future Hall of Famer in his prime. He'd pair beautifully alongside Trae who could feed him easy buckets in transition and the half court much more than what Gobert is getting in Utah. Defensively, Gobert also has the size/strength to go toe-to-toe with Embiid and Giannis one on one -- something no one else on our team currently can do.

Four years of a slowly diminishing Rudy Gobert at $40 million per season is difficult to get past, though.

More on the issues in Utah:

Did not say Capela was as impactful.
I just think the upgrade vs what we'd give up to get him, his actual salary and filling in the rest of the roster due to his salary, the delta between him and Capela isn't worth it.

Off-day question...

If Huerter + non-lotto pick(s) could get you Johnny Davis, would you do it?

Return to Atlanta Hawks
