And said worse himself:

Rep. Steve King wonders what ‘sub-groups’ besides whites made contributions to civilization

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) offered an unusual defense of the racial homogeneity of his party during a panel on MSNBC Monday evening.

"This 'old white people' business does get a little tired, Charlie," King said. "I'd ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about, where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?"

It's just so unbelievably ignorant it's hard to believe. It really proves that point that there is no way to make a truly stupid person understand that they are stupid.

Want to hear something even more frightening? I read that initially thinking it was an American politician that said it ... and I didn't feel the least bit surprised to see those kinds of statements being made publicly.

Sadly, Steven King is an American Congressman from Iowa. And he's repeated/retweeted these sentiments loudly and proudly.

:nonono:

Sad. He's being elected for a reason too. Scary.

The Legacy of John Skipper and the Future of ESPN

The network president’s sudden resignation raises even more questions for the Worldwide Leader after a tumultuous 2017

ESPN is in a war and doesn’t have a general at all.

Reading the press release that Skipper is leaving because of a substance addiction makes you think, It feels like something is missing ...

The last year of Skipper’s command was an annus horribilis by any measure. ESPN had two talent-draining and soul-sucking rounds of layoffs. The president of the United States put the network on his enemies list. There was the Robert Lee switcheroo and exactly one episode of Barstool Van Talk. There were sexual harassment allegations. There was—of course—cord-cutting. It says something when the semi-retirement of Chris Berman, ESPN’s first and biggest star, is all but forgotten.

Cord-cutting is a nightmare that everyone from Disney chief Bob Iger on down is trying to figure out. But the Lee and Barstool fiascoes seemed like unforced errors.

Skipper’s meek response to President Donald Trump’s attacks on Jemele Hill also caused some eye-rolling. “Are you a news organization or not?” one person who dealt with Skipper wondered.

An ESPN employee told me that when Skipper didn’t staunchly defend Hill, it was the moment the rank-and-file began to wonder if the network really had their backs.

The whole cord-cutting revolution is really interesting the way it's turning television revenue on it's head. It's still in it's infancy but it's coming so fast it will be a huge issue. Frankly I'm a little unclear why a network like ESPN, which has the original content it needs, can't make this work by releasing their own app. I know they have one but in general you can't watch live programming unless you are signed up with a provider. Maybe their contracts with the providers prevent that but I'd say it's time to renegotiate that. Then sell advertising directly for those provider ad spots.

I'm curious how many people on here are streaming their TV vs. a cable subscription. I currently have DirectvNow and Playstation Vue streaming apps that i'm paying for. It's kind of stupid to have 2 but I'm just waiting for Directvnow to add a dvr and then i'll have everything i cared about with xfinity tv for $25/month instead of $135. This includes all local channels and regional sports networks without blackouts.

Eh, I'm thinking of castrating my tv soon. How simple is it and are you having any issues now without the cord? I'm wondering if the kids will have trouble with it.

I assure you, the kids will adapt much easier than you.

If they can work a smart phone, they can manage getting in and out of the apps to watch their favorite shows ON DEMAND.

(In retrospect, why exactly did we let networks dictate when and where we could watch our favorite shows for so darn long?)

Agree. The kids are no problem. It's the wife that hates it but she wanted to watch less tv anyway so she's ok with it.

Honestly though if one of the streaming tv apps works for you then it's pretty much the same although the interfaces could use some work. I've tried most of them. You have to pick a device (unless you have a smart tv) and a service. Here's my rundown if anyone cares.

I have a Amazon Fire TV which works well. You can also get roku, apple tv, and chromecast. I don't like chromecast because you have to use your phone as a remote. I'm just using wifi but you can wire into your router for better performance. Mines good enough though. I'd also say to get the full blown Fire TV or Roku and not the 'streaming sticks'. They have more memory and speed is a lot better loading apps and stuff. I like Fire Tv's voice remote.

Services:
1. playstation vue - the service and interface are really nice. I have the regional sports and the dvr works well. I think it costs me $40/month. Great for Hawks games because it has a 10 second skip ahead (and back). Side out of bounds is usually 10 seconds, free throws about 50 seconds, commercial breaks usually 2 or 3 minutes. I'm keeping this strictly because it has a dvr and directvnow doesn't but will cancel it as soon as directvnow releases their upgraded service. PSVUE is missing NBC in atlanta right now.

2. directvnow - best picture quality and the interface is most like cable tv but right now doesn't have a dvr. This will supposedly get fixed in early 2018. It also has more local channels in the atlanta area than any other. And the best part is that if you have at&t cell service you can get this with regional sports for $25/month. Most of the others are $35-$50

3. youtube tv - right now it's only on computers and mobile devices but they are starting to release apps for the streaming devices. Of course, because google and amazon hate each other the fire tv will be last if ever. The service is pretty great and $35/month gets you everything. I wish i could get it. If you have chromecast you can put it on your tv but then using the phone for a remote sucks for basketball.

4. slingtv - it's ok but i think it's too expensive to get dvr and regional sports (i.e. hawks). picture quality was lacking for me.

5. hulu live - I couldn't stand the interface on this thing. truly sucked.

I guess I should have mentioned that i have Google Fiber internet. If you don't have good internet with consistent speeds then you might have problems. I'd try it all out before you cancel your cable.

National news story from my old backyard:

Power of kneeling Kennesaw State cheerleaders revealed in president's resignation

Perhaps you missed it, but a notable chapter in America’s civil rights history took place last week in Georgia.

The Kennesaw State University president, Sam Olens, will officially step down from his post in February in the aftermath of five school cheerleaders kneeling during the national anthem before a September football game.

highest level of their university.

“The KSU cheerleaders will go down in civil rights history,” said Susan Raines, who is a professor of conflict management at the school. “What little power they had made a difference, and that should be a lesson to all of us.”

The cheerleaders’ protest, done to call attention to social inequality and police brutality, led to their banishment to the tunnel for ensuing games.

Kennesaw State University president, Sam Olens claimed the decision was because of a predetermined pregame protocol plan, but Atlanta-area journalists reported that two high-ranking authority figures, state representative Earl Ehrhart and Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren, pressured Olens through text messages to put an end to the public displays. When the text exchanges emerged into public view, it looked very much as if the school president had covered up the real reason for the pregame change, and effectively suppressed First Amendment rights.

I'm guessing the ATL locals are already aware of this. But I just got the news up North.

I grew watching this lady on WAGA in the 90s. She's definitely had a rough last few years.

RIP, AD.
