John Hollinger’s NBA All-Underrated Team

Clint Capela, C, Atlanta

Clint Capela is just starting to gain national recognition for the strength of his regular season, one strong enough that he had a case as an All-Star replacement if they had needed any.

The Hawks don’t get a lot of attention, and most of what seeps out is focused on Trae Young, which has resulted in Capela’s achievements largely going undiscovered. (While we’re here, an honorable mention shoutout to Bogdan Bogdanvoic, firing in lasers from all over the court.)

The Hawks had the worst center rotation in the league last season and replacing that with 30 minutes of Capela has been the main thing vaulting them into the East’s top five. His addition helped fortify a rather shaky perimeter defense with his rim protection and rebounding, a key reason the Hawks improved from 27th to 22nd in defense this year despite adding multiple offense-only players.

The stats show the defense is respectable with Capela (108.0 opponent offensive rating) and flammable without (114.2). It’s not hard to see why: Capela’s 6.1 percent block rate is the league’s fifth-best, despite the fact he doesn’t recklessly chase blocks.

Offensively, his rim runs make him a potent threat despite a lack of shooting range, especially in concert with Young’s pick-and-roll skills. He’s added a bit of short-range post game to his program and overall converts 59.3 percent from the floor. Shooting is the big weakness: Capela still struggles from the line (57.1 percent), so opponents may use the Hack-a-Helvetian strategy against the Swiss center come playoff time.

Finally, there’s the phenomenal work on the glass. Capela leads the league in rebound rate by a wide margin pulling down 26.2 percent of missed shots in his minutes. Amazingly, he leads in both offensive and defensive rebounding.

Thankfully we saw value with him not being used properly in Houston. What an anchor we have with CC.

Capela is backbone of Hawks -- and quite a trash talker, too

Image

If Trae Young is the unquestioned star of the Atlanta Hawks, then Clint Capela is the backbone.

A pretty good trash talker, too.

The burly, 6-foot-10 Swiss center has given the Hawks the gritty defensive presence they so desperately needed.

Without Capela, it's hard to envision Atlanta preparing for its first appearance in the Eastern Conference semifinals since 2016.

“He's the anchor for us,” interim coach Nate McMillan said. “Defensively, he's been the guy all season who cleans up our breakdowns and mistakes on the perimeter.”

Capela was acquired by the Hawks from Houston last year at the trade deadline — part of a 12-player deal that signaled Atlanta was ready to take the next step in a massive rebuild that produced three straight dismal seasons.

For the first time in the overhaul, the Hawks weren't taking on a big salary just for the sake of future cap space. They had big plans for Capela, even though a foot injury prevented him from suiting up for his new team before the pandemic shut down the 2020 season.

Capela played all but nine games this season, giving the Hawks one of the best stoppers in the league (even though he was inexplicably excluded from the finalists for the defensive player of the year award).

Capela led the NBA in rebounding (14.3 per game) — the first Atlanta player to accomplish that feat since Dikeme Mutombo in 1999-2000 — and averaged 2.0 blocks as well. He was a double-double machine, putting up double-figures in points and rebounds in 48 of 63 games.

On a team loaded with 3-point shooters, Capela is the guy who thrives doing the dirty work on the inside.

Capela played a huge role in Atlanta's five-game victory over the favored New York Knicks in the opening round of the playoffs.

Standing up to one of the league's most physical teams, he helped to shut down All-Star Julius Randle and went toe-to-toe with Taj Gibson and Nerlens Noel in the lane.

Before the final game, Capela bluntly predicted that Atlanta would send the Knicks on vacation. He also accused New York of bullying tactics that weren't working, culminating in Randle's flagrant foul in the closing minutes of a Hawks blowout victory in Game 4.

“They were trying to play tough, push our guys around, talk" trash, Capela said. “But we can do that, too. We showed them ... that we can push guys around, too. We can talk (trash) as well. What are you going to do about it? We can do it and get the win, too.”

McMillan wasn't very thrilled with Capela's blunt chatter, but his teammates loved it.

Now, it's on to the second round against the top-seeded 76ers. Game 1 is Sunday in Philadelphia.

The Hawks are again the underdogs.

Capela doesn't sound the least bit concerned.

“We just want see where we can go,” he said. "Every game is really exciting with this team. We have a great mentality. We're playing hard on defense. We're making sure we're doing the job the right way.

"With that mentality and the potential we have, the sky's the limit for us."

Is it to soon to talk about a contract extension? Or, get John Collins situation figured out first, and get Trae extended?

He has 2 years left so I don't think he's extension eligible as yet.

Next.

Summer.

And I can't imagine we'll let him get anywhere near Free Agency. At this point, I believe he's second only to Trae in importance to the team. It definitely changes the calculus on deals for Collins, Hunter and Huerter.

Clint might want to get to FAcy so he can get more money on a new deal with whatever the new CBA cap is vs an extension to his current contract which can limit the amount the Hawks can offer.

Perhaps. And if Capela turns down an extension in 2022 for a chance at a bigger payday -- just as Okongwu is coming into his own -- I expect us to dangle him in trade talks.

That's the business of the NBA.

Hawks let Josh Smith, AL Horford and Paul Millsap walk away in Free Agency for nothing. I hope to god the current regime isn't dumb enough to let it happen again with Clint Capela.

Cap has earned an extra $1 million for making the Conference Finals.

He certainly earned all of that last series... That was rough for him, but he kept fighting. Looking forward to him hopefully having a good ECF!

He had missed a 0.5M bonus for not reaching 65% on the FT line this season, but that's the kind of incentives I like, it's a benefit on the team results, more than what brings a All-Star or All-NBA spot (even if it certainly can increase merchandising income)

There's something I was really happy with regarding this playoffs : I always thought it was important to have a lot of good FT shooters in the team, actually it was the only thing I fear when the trade for Capela happened, but that was good regarding Gallo, and it paid off during these playoffs.
It have cost one game Vs PHI (13-24 FTs) but they mainly were good. Now, If Clint can improve it during these ECF, it would be great
