Re: Trae Young: Max Contract Superstar
I hope Trae watches the Bucks Game and this Steph Curry masterpiece on repeat. Find a way to mesh those two styles of team play and individual dominance. Otherwise, he'll be just another chucker.

I see an awful lot of names on these lists...but one seems to be missing.

Re: Trae Young: Max Contract Superstar
Bleacher ReportGrading Every NBA Team's Top Player
Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young
Grade: C-
Alarm bells start sounding when you dig into Trae Young's numbers.
Putting up 27.9 points and 9.2 assists is patently ridiculous, and he has managed to up his volume at the charity stripe, where he's shooting 92.5 percent. But his overarching efficiency is down at every level. He's shooting 43 percent at the rim, 40 percent from mid-range and 30 percent from three—marks that pale in comparison to last year's 59/47/39 split.
Young has also exchanged long-range attempts for more looks between four and 14 feet. That's not sinister when he's converting over 46 percent of his floaters, but it's worth noting.
Bumps and hiccups are the expectation right now. He and Dejounte Murray have been a stellar fit, but not a natural one. Young is spending more time away from the ball—not a ton, but it's a noticeable change. More of his buckets are coming off assists compared to last season, and his total time of possession per game has dropped by over 11 percent—from 8.7 minutes to 7.7—despite virtually no change in court time.
Lineups featuring Young without Murray are also getting annihilated. Dinging him for that feels off. The lift during those minutes is heavy. Bogdan Bogdanovic has yet to play this season, and head coach Nate McMillan has responded by tethering many of Young's solo stints to both Holiday brothers.
Defaulting to a "C-" could seem cruel. Young's output remains absurd, and he's trying different things, within more confined spaces. But his efficiency dip, while not unexpected or entirely his own fault, is at least a hair more significant than you'd like.

Man, we gotta get an offensive coach in here soon. This is the type of efficiency that Ty should be approaching on a regular basis as he enters his prime.

Re: Trae Young: Max Contract Superstar
Trae's diminutive size does limit him in some passing situations. But his patience and vision here allow him to make the right play.

I don't understand this ultimatum.
While Young was receiving treatment on his right shoulder, sources say McMillan asked him whether he would participate in shootaround, receive treatment during walk-through and play in the game against the Nuggets. But Young made it clear that he wanted to focus solely on his treatment while missing shootaround and deciding later in the day whether he would play.
That approach, however, was not McMillan approved. Since the face of the Hawks’ franchise was deciding not to take part in shootaround, McMillan ultimately presented him with two options for that night’s game, sources said: Play off the bench — or do not show up to the arena. Young responded by saying he would not be playing against the Nuggets, and the team ruled him out while citing right shoulder soreness.
McMillan told reporters on Sunday that Young did not play on Friday night due to a “miscommunication.” Young practiced fully on Sunday and will return on Monday against Oklahoma City.
There is no disciplinary action given by the team to Young in the aftermath of the situation, sources said.

Re: Trae Young: Max Contract Superstar
Interesting read regarding our next few years.
Trae Young gives Hawks a puncher's chance now, but their real window should open in a few years

Trae Young gives Hawks a puncher's chance now, but their real window should open in a few years
The Atlanta Hawks' surprising run to the 2021 Eastern Conference finals, where they put an honest scare into the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks, told us, effectively, one thing: Trae Young is a superstar. Yes, the team over-performed, especially defensively, and the matchups with the Knicks and Sixers look pretty gift-wrapped in hindsight. But what Young did, was real. He was the reason the Hawks had a puncher's chance then, and he's the reason they have a puncher's chance now.
Even at 13-11 and starting to skid, the Hawks aren't a team to be trifled with because Young, even in a down-shooting year so far, registers as one of the most inevitable point-creators in the league, and now he has a second creator in Dejounte Murray, who, in theory, should make Atlanta less susceptible to Young-eliminating defensive schemes in the playoffs.
There's some upside-down stuff happening with the Hawks. Entering play on Tuesday, they're a bottom-10 offense and a top-10 defense. There's some shooting luck baked into the latter -- opponents are making just 35.2 percent of their wide-open 3s, which NBA.com defines as the nearest defender being at least six feet away, the fourth-worst mark in the league. Assuming that number rises, Atlanta's defensive profile will likely fall.
That said, this isn't all smoke and mirrors. Onyeka Okongwu raved about the addition of Murray, telling CBS Sports he has brought "swagger" to Atlanta's defense, which is legitimately outfitted with capable components. Murray, De'Andre Hunter, Okongwu, John Collins, these are all at least capable defenders, with Murray and Okongwu profiling as much better than that, and Capela is back to his 2021 post-coaching-change form.
............Until then, the Hawks will rely on Young, and to a lesser degree Murray, to create everything and hope Young's 3-point shooting comes around. That's not a championship blueprint, but it's good enough until Hunter hopefully gets better, until Okongwu takes over at center and becomes his fully realized self (which, to me, is something of a more fluid and athletic Kevon Looney), until the front office decides whether McMillan is the guy.
It's not a bad place to be. The Hawks are pretty close to a really good team. If they didn't make that 2021 run, we would be more realistic about their timeline. But they did. And it tricked us into thinking this team was ready. It's not. But it will be, or could be, in a few years.

2018 NBA re-draft: The way it should have been
No. 2 pick: Trae Young
Actual position: No. 5
Career earnings: $26,534,551
Career stats: 25.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 9.2 apg, 43.8 FG%, 35.2 3P%
Scouting Report
Trae Young came out firing in the NBA, being named an All-Star in his second season and 3rd Team All-NBA last year, at one point looking like a potential Stephen Curry 2.0. However, a down year with questions about how high-usage, no-defense style of play, along with his clashing with head coach, Nate McMillan, has raised a lot of questions about Young this season. Young might not be all that fun to play with, as he controls so much of the ball and has shown such little interest in improving his off-ball efforts. Plus, can a small point guard even lead a team all the way? Curry did. Can Young follow suit one day?

Trae playing defense. The biggest thing is communication.
