You mean like Marvin Williams?
Shelden Williams?
Adreian Payne?
John Jenkins?
Acie Law IV?
Josh Childress?
Demarre Johnson?

*Added: All teams have stretches of bad drafting.

Name me the top-5 picks that we wasted in the last 10 years. I'll wait.

LOL

That's a trick question and you know it! We've had no top-5 selections in that span.

But let's not pretend the decade prior we didn't squander years of lottery picks.

On a serious note though, us screwing up mid-late 1sts isn't in the stratosphere with teams like PHX, SAC, etc. annually screwing up lotto picks.

That...is accurate.

I just remember when we were doing the same thing under Billy Knight.

Hawks fans didn't ''deserve'' to be bad just because the Atlanta Spirit hired a stubborn buffoon as a GM.

True, but other teams werent clamoring for the Hawks to get a good pick. Even now, on the GB - some saying Hawks don't deserve a player like Ayton.

The best 'pic' Billy Knight ever produced was him shunning Belkin (see what I did there). :D

You people forget though, we don’t draft like the Hawks of 10 years ago with Knight and Woody...we draft much better and if I had to take a wild guess with tanking all 30 teams as far as drafting I’d say we were 25/30 teams 10 years ago but in the top 10 now..track record shows with Prince and Collins so far.

I don’t think we are gonna mess this pick up. Well..I’m hoping we don’t.

The Hawks did deserve to be bad between BK and the craptastic ownership group that hired him but what did they do? Take it on the chin and strive and clawed and fought to make some damn decent lemonade despite the bushel full of dried up moldy lemons they were handed. So yea, the Hawks have earned a little luck and those other franchises need to take their lumps and pray they only end up better for it instead expecting pity.

I remember that period very differently.

I remember one owner suing the others, the remaining owners handing out the worst contract in franchise history and then trying to pawn off that contract and the team to a pizza salesman from California.

Along the way, they underspent on coaches, underspent on infrastructure and made weird, racially insensitive assessments in internal meetings/memos.

Or am I thinking of a different moribund franchise in Atlanta?

And despite all of that they still managed 10 years in the playoffs while other teams experienced half the dysfunction, get gifted stars and multiple opportunities to draft stars yet continue to be the dregs of the league. Nope, no pity here.

Read on Twitter

...watching Oklahoma’s Trae Young play is such a relief. For all the hype about his long-range shooting, I’m most impressed by Young’s feel for the game. Here is a freshman point guard with an NBA-level understanding of how to play to go along with NBA-level skills. Young sees what plays should be made and he makes them (even if his teammates aren’t good enough to convert at a high rate).

Young’s 49.0 assist rate and 10.1 assists per 40 minutes are ridiculous numbers for any player, let alone a freshman playing at a high-major school. Yong has outstanding court vision and ball-handling ability. Young isn’t particularly quick but he’s crafty about shifting speeds, changing directions and using the threat of his 3-point shot to get where he wants.

Young has a low release point and often launches at a moment’s notice without being square to the basket. Young’s unorthodox methods, slight build and his high-volume 3-point shooting have led to comparisons to Stephen Curry.

You can see why Young is a top NBA prospect despite his small stature and questionable defensive ability.

I suspect that Young is worn down from carrying such a big offensive load. There aren’t many other Sooners players for opponents to worry about so they sell out trying to contain Young, who surely must be affected by seeing his teammates blow so many easy chances that he creates.

Young draws fouls at a very high rate (7.3 per 40 minutes) and is shooting 86 percent on 263 free-throw attempts...he’s shot 49 percent on runners. Making that shot consistently is crucial for smaller guards in the NBA, especially if they aren’t explosive athletes, because finishing at the rim is so hard to do.

...even accounting for the circumstances, Young has some offensive limitations because of his size and relative lack of athleticism.

He’s shooting just 49.5 percent on 2-pointers.

Young is an elite NBA prospect because of his skill, feel for the game, play-making and shot-making. If he can develop into an adequate defender and diversify his offensive game Young can be an outstanding NBA player in the pace-and-space era.

^I'm getting close to narrowing my dream selections as to any of Trae -- M Porter Jr -- Luka.

I want a two way star. But these guys have the chance to be special. Even if they are all gambles.

I can't 'like' this post enough. With the foundation sinking and the roof on fire, we had 10 straight playoff years. Meanwhile, these other crap-arse franchises turn lotto pick after lotto pick into .... more lotto picks.

Imagine if we had just one primo pick.

I’m Mike and y’all Pippen...-Migo Mace (That’s like a Brian Dawkins mic drop..).

Ps On a slightly off topic note, I was helping a friend move and somebody threw me down a couch cushion down 15 stairs and I tried to catch off some momentum building stairs and the door was 5 feet behind me...I was basically tackled against the door in an ungentle and impure way...made me think of Trae Young’s rookie year...

Pps DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME!

:P I’m concussed perhaps but this has nothing to do with the door hit...I think it’s more Chico spring break 98.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
