But the history books won't care. It's a hell of an accomplishment. And should cinch Player of the Week Honors.

No asterisk needed. He balled out in regulation to continue his 35 and 10 streak. This kid is turning into something special. I don't care what anyone says.

Agreed! And, The Dallas pick might just be icing on the cake! I will be the first to admit that I was totally upset when the Hawks passed on the opportunity to select Doncic but Young is having a GREAT Rookie season and hopefully he will have many more GREAT seasons with the Hawks!!!

Rookie of the Year favorite Luka Doncic has received some stiff competition as of late, particularly from Hawks guard Trae Young, who has become must-watch entertainment for a suddenly very promising Atlanta squad. Young was so great this week that he took the top spot in the rankings, so often occupied by Doncic. Much more on his rapid ascent below.

#1 Trae Young:
The Trae Young Show has officially arrived in the NBA. Every wildest hope and lofty ceiling regarding Young came to fruition in four games over the past week, as the 20-year-old set career highs with 36 points and eight 3-pointers in a loss to the Rockets, then followed it up with 36 again in the very next game -- a comeback win over the Timberwolves. Young has been brilliant, but the key is that instead of his increased scoring hindering his playmaking and passing ability, it's actually bolstered it. Teams have occasionally been throwing soft traps at Young (not uncommon for point guards of his size), and since he's been so good at throwing lobs to rolling bigs, teams have cut off the lane as well. So what has Young done? He's been patient, flinging cross-court lefty passes on time and on target to waiting open

Trae Young Making Late, Compelling ROY Push

Young's 49-point game Friday night is the latest in a string of on-fire performances the 20-year-old has turned in since play resumed from the All-Star break Feb. 22. Many jaw-dropping statistics surfaced during the nearly four-hour game Friday night, and most of them pertained to Young.

However, it's his comparison to the rookie that the Hawks traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Young that is most compelling. During the game, Marc Stein of the New York Times posed a question:

Like Young in the Eastern Conference, Doncic was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for February, his fourth month in a row winning the honor. This season, Doncic is averaging 20.9 points per game along with 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.

Doncic has been the clear Rookie of the Year for much of this season, but since the All-Star break, the race is turning into a two-man conversation with Young taking an edge one 30-plus-point game at a time.

MARK STEIN - The answer is yes, both teams got the player they wanted AND the Hawks added a second draft
pick in the exchange...

I really don’t want to be an obnoxious fanbase like Boston and I don’t want any negativity attached to Trae, so I hope this is the last time that happens. Let Luka be Luka on his own.

Agreed. I think it's the inevitable backlash to the overwhelming press and fanfare Luka received very early on.

I had a feeling it was coming as his shooting percentages dropped, his defensive shortcomings have come to the light and after the coaches declined to name him an All Star reserve.
