If we draft Luka, JJJ, or Bamba, it means that we think they can become part of a team
If we draft Bagley, MPJ, or Trae, it's because we think they can become the team

This would be just as bad and just the same outrage as the missed Chris Paul pick.
Talent wise you don't pass on Doncic
PR wise you don't pass on Doncic
Passing on Doncic is something that gets GM fired and will live as their legacy in the NBA, just like how Billy Knight is only know for being one of the stupidest GMs in NBA history because of passing on Chris Paul.
Ayton and Luka are the Oden and Durant of this draft. Doncic and Durant basically have the same level hype going into the draft. Passing on Luka would be just the same if the Sonics and Hawks passed on Durant just so that they can get Brandan Wright or Joakim Noah or Spencer Hawes

VERY well stated.
And having five 1st round picks total between the next couple of drafts is conducive to building that team should we settle in on one of Luka, JJJ, Bambo (or Carter or Mikal).
I keep going back to the fact GSW grabbed and developed Hall of Famers with in the back half of the lottery. I believe Travis assumes he can grab that caliber of talent without having a top-3 pick every year.
Thus the rumors/comments of us willing to trade back in this draft.

The Suns hired his HC from Euroleague last year. I think there’s still something there.

So you’re saying Ayton will be injury prone and a huge bust?

No. He's just stating that it's clearly those two prospects at the top of the draft boards.
Similar to 2007 when Oden and Durant were the two can't miss prospects. And everyone else was jockeying for 3rd.

Ayton to me actually looks like Oden physically. He’s a huge man, I could see him dealing with knee or foot issues soon.
He’s no where near the defensive player Oden was so Ayton’s bust rate is definitely higher.

Ayton and Oden had the same Duncan type of hype coming into the draft. Ayton hasn't dealt with any major injury in college or high school like Oden did. Ayton will have the same health risk as KAT or Anthony Davis
Because of Oden, that is why i wouldn't even select Michael Porter in the lottery anymore. He is a #15-#20 prospect to me now.
Embiid also got seriously injured in college, and that is why i rated him a low lottery pick in his draft, and it looks like i'm right about him, he is a good prospect, but worthless when you are just sitting on the bench.

I'm not sold on Luka by any means. He's being mentioned as if he's going to be a superstar talent and I have a difficult time believing that becomes true at the NBA level.

Luka Doncic is basically that pretty good player in your pickup game who can do everything at a B+ level and who you like playing with because he will pass you the ball even though you're 1 for 8.
I don't know if that's the guy worth drafting at #3 in a 30 team league, but you know at the very least he'll be a good player who helps your team win.
MPJ is that dude who never passes the ball back after getting it, plays no defense, and jacks contested long jumpers over people to mixed results.

Re: How many Hawks Fans would NOT select Luka Doncic if he somehow fell to #3?
Looking for that guy who can be here 10+ years, be a team leader, and make a couple of all-star teams.
Except for the back, my fav is Porter, who could play with Collins. Bagley and Collins? Seems like duplication.
I’m all about the shooters and guards. Need to create that backcourt that identifies this team.
Do you pick someone to avoid having to go against him in the East? For me, Young might be that guy.
We are too early for Collins, but like his game as well. Like Knox’s body style as well...closest thing to Durant we could have a shot at.

Hawks SiteDraft Profile: Will Luka Doncic Take The NBA By Storm?
At Hawks.com, we'll be talking to some of the writers and bloggers who watched some of this year's key prospects most closely.
Today we talk to Austin Green (@LosCrossovers) of the EuroLeague Adventures podcast about pick-and-roll prodigy Luka Doncic of Real Madrid.
Luka is an incredibly good passer and pick-and-roll playmaker with a high basketball IQ. His feel for the game is amazing. He understands timing and angles on an instinctive level that you often don't see from 10-year NBA vets, let alone a teenager. He has the creative mind of someone like Manu Ginobili, but in a 6-foot-8, 230-pound body.
He is a versatile scorer who can shoot threes, convert floaters and mid-range jumpers and score in the post. He is great at grabbing defensive rebounds and pushing the ball up in transition, looking to feed teammates, hit pull-up threes or attack the basket if defenders don't stop his momentum.
His game will translate very well. The NBA is a fast-paced, pick-and-roll, three-point shooting league, and that suits Luka's style perfectly. Luka's biggest weakness right now is his lateral quickness. He will struggle to stay in front of most NBA point guards and the quicker wings. He'll get burned at times, but I think he's smart enough and athletic enough to eventually become a decent NBA defender. Luka likes to get up and down the court and play kind of a free-flowing game. He is great at attacking moving defenses, both in transition and in the half-court.
His body reminds me of Joe Johnson or Paul Pierce -- 6-foot-8, strong, great skills and timing and footwork, but not particularly explosive. And like I said, he has the creative and savvy mind of someone like Manu Ginobili.

You feel like a kid in a candy store now that you've found some real analysis, huh? Happy birthday to you, bro.
On 'lateral quickness', I think my guy Green is glossing over the fact that this will also impact him offensively. He won't be getting past guys off the bounce like he has been and he'll struggle to get his shot off. I think he's talented enough that these won't render him a non-NBA guy (like most of the dudes he's been beasting on). I think it'll severely lower his ceiling ... to Evan Turner/Hedo level ... which is what. I've been saying. For MONTHS!!!

Also, in case you were wondering (and I know you were), I'm still saving your seat on the Okogie-wagon. But we're not happy with all that Elfrid Walker love you been showing lately.

meh...His analysis is largely what I've already heard/read over the past 6 months about these guys.
I'm still high on Dzanan Musa.
On topic, Luka will struggle in one-on-one style of isolation. But in a structured offense with plenty of off-ball movement and screening...he should thrive.
I have no idea what type of offense Lloyd will run. I do have reservations for a young, first time coach with a predilection for defense. Those guys too often focus too much on the end of the court that they know best.
If you surround Luka with athletic wings who can score off the bounce, it will be difficult for opposing defenses to focus all their attention on stopping Doncic.

Honestly, looking at his staff, I'm expecting us to struggle mightily on O. Mightily.
If Doncic had higher-level athleticism, he'd be just what the doctor ordered for us. Unfortunately, he's not. We'll need a guy capable of exploiting 1-on-1 matchups on offense. Doncic will help someone, just not us.
I listened to another scout over the weekend and he was incredibly down on Doncic. Rashad ... Something, I can't remember his name ... but he had him like 12 in his mock. Biggest issue was the whole athleticism thing. Again, not that he won't be an NBA player .. just that he won't be close to what we've seen in Euroleague and international play. The example he gave was stte: "Can you see him getting past a guy like KCP the way he's been blowing past these non-NBA defenders in Euroleagues? ... and KCP is an average NBA defender."
And, honestly, I'm sick of all the 'system' stuff. "Oooooh, ball movement" and all that nonsense. I want us to have an alpha. Or shiiii, alphas? The 'system' doesn't get buckets when you need it. Alphas do. GS has a cute system but they win because they have alphas.
C'mon, @jamammamally, you see that. Stop talking systems. We had an excellent system the past 4 years. What TF did that get us? 'Splain it ta me.

I'm sorry, but I can't call an offensive system that ranks in the bottom 5 of the league, excellent.
I disagree with your take on Doncic.
But, I'm surprised to hear you break with Austin Green's take on him. Last week Green's take was considered gospel for you, this week you seem willing to dismiss his take for yet another scout whose name you can't remember.
