In 2020, everyone has cap room so it doesn't matter but 19-2020. I'll rather have cap room and sign a key FA center or take a contract from a team in the red like Heat or the Rockets and have options this summer. I don't like the trades that have been mentioned.
Who is an available free agent center you would want? The only person who stands out is Vucevic.
We are not going to get a 1st for just Lin or just Dedmon. No team has done that and "holding out" for one just means we will either keep them or buy them out like we did last season with other players.
I also don't see how waiting until the offseason to trade for someone from the Rockets (I guess they would want to dump Knight) is any different than doing it now.
I want Horford, if Marc opts out him, or even a cheaper option like Vonleh. Personally, I'll rather take a bad Melo like one year deal in the summer for a 2020 1st rounder from a team who is over the cap or wants to clear cap space. I personally want to look at moving up in the draft with the #8-12 pick into the top 5 for Reddish and a player asset like Prince. Maybe NY and taking on Lee's contract as well.
I want a pretty good deal. I don't see nothing good about Brandon Knight's contract. A late 1st is trash for him. Two 1sts isn't great but it's not trash and HOU has limited interest in that. I just don't see anything that makes sense.
I don't want a 1st for Dedmon. I really just want to move him for two future 2nds. For Lin, I want a late 1st but not if we have to take money in 2020. I'll rather move from him and keep the cap space.
I see a major difference in the fact that we have more options and flexibility. I think doing otherwise is Sund, Conangelo or Bud/Cox like. Stupid GMing.
Smart GMing is understanding value. Dumb GMing is not. Prime example is PHX and Tyson Chandler. Chandler was going to be a cut option in 2019 no matter what. But when GM Jones cut him in DEC, it ended the trade value they could have had in a move for a PG. Now, you can say, what if nothing was available? You don't know that till the trade deadline is here and teams have reevaluated their board. No it took an asset which wasn't worth much in Chandler and removed it as at least it was a salary filler with real assets attached. This is Bad GMing.
A deal I would take for dead money is a Dallas deal we got.
A 2020 top 5 protected pick for dead money and assets.
Lin/Dedmon/Anderson for Hill/Clark/Wes/FRP above
Lin - late 1st
Dedmon - two 2nds
Anderson - 2nd
Hill - negative - I want a top 5 protected pick for.
Clark - No value
Wes - 2nd
I would do that.
I would do a simple Dedmon for Chriss and two 2nds (later than 2019).
For Lin, I want a late 1st or his cap space and potentially resigning him. I value him as an asset.
I don't see Dedmon having a future here but I see his value to other teams as a backup. That's worth two 2nds. Maybe one really good 2nd since all 2nds after the top 10 2nd rounders is worthless anyway.
My value for Lin:
1. late 1st with matching money. No dead money.
2. Cap space
3. Young asset with maybe cap space attached. Unlikely considering Lin's age and status.
My value for Dedmon:
1. Attached to better asset for a good asset. (Quality Filler)
2. Two 2nds and matching money. No dead money what so ever.
3. Cap space.
What i don't value for neither:
1. DEAD MONEY
2. Highly protected 1st that become two 2nds.
3. Cutting them after the deadline. Both players have value remaining on the roster. Although I do think Dedmon is a possible option for this if Atlanta doesn't have interest in bringing him back.
