Top five under-the-radar NBA teams to watch for the stretch run

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks find themselves in a tough spot. They don't have a guaranteed first-round pick in this year's draft. Their selection transfers to the Hawks if it falls outside the top five, which presents a dilemma: Tank to improve their lottery odds and hope for a top-five pick, or try to push for the playoffs and start conveying the many first-rounders they owe?

It will be interesting to see the direction Dallas takes in the final seven weeks. Another high draft pick to pair with rookie sensation Luka Doncic and recently-acquired Kristaps Porzingis may be the smarter long-term strategy. But Doncic's stellar play could keep the Mavericks out of the top five selections.

No way Dallas makes the playoffs but no way they tank. Like us, they will lose more than they win but win a fair share. Luka has too much heart and Tim is always good for 4-5 wins they had no business winning because he got hot

At the 9th spot, teams have no lotto balls to finish 6th-8th which absolutely sucks. Majority odds is for 9th and back. Also it holds a miniscule chance at a top 4 pick.

Not even going to sweat it anymore. Would strongly prefer a top 10 2020 pick but it's what it is.

Everyone 1-8 are tanking teams right now outside of Chicago. It will be hard to move up in the tank standings

Worried, Why? Memphis is in absolute utter free fall. The absolute worst Dallas could do is finish 7th, which even that will be a challenge with the Pelicans closing up shop as well.

No thanks. I like seeing some quality wins. Not to belabor the point, but it's all about lottery night, and incremental odds differences are minimal.

Look at Mavs starters, Jalen, Tim, DSF, Dirk, Salah. This is the worse starting 5 in the league. They can easily lose all their remaining games, if they don’t play Luka.

That'd be crazy if the Mavs were willing to tank that hard. I'm sure they'll use every opportunity to not push Luka too hard now that they are out of the playoff hunt though.

70% of their games are unwinnable with Luka or without, they just have to sit him when they play winnable games. It probably won’t happen, but 1 minor injury and things can change.

No. No matter how bad a team is they win at least 1/4th of their games. They will win at least 5 or 6 more. Luka's injury isn't serious either, he'll be back soon.
