So where is that superstar we are supposed to be getting? We will get too many wins to get in the Zion sweepstakes......the NBA will give them Zion for losing Lebron. Book it.

Boogie, Horford. Obviously not a superstar but a quality player that will get us into the playoffs. I honestly believe we can just resign Dedmon and make the playoffs but we would be an easy exit. Plus, the 2020 NBA FA class is beyond weak. This is the year you need to be looking to sign a FA.

Good. Screw all these playoff teams who expect lesser teams to do them favors by buying out players. If you want one of our players you best trade for them or gtfo.
I'm hoping he learned something from last season's buy out but we shall see.
My guess is teams are hoping he buys out Lin and Ded so they can get them cheap - that's probably why the offers were not decent. They're prolly thinking....he'll buy them out.
As far as I'm aware neither guys wants to leave.

Why?
We need a top tier center who can score around the basket, set great screens, draw the defense while helping us spread out the court. Horford covers a lot of ground on defense to protect Collins and Cousins scoring potential in our system is elite and would be great in our system. They are perfect!

That's what I've been thinking since last deadline and especially after the top 5 protection from Dallas. He may be an ace on the draft board and a strong strategist, but he's looking weak on the phones. Granted that's probably the toughest part for a new GM.

This says to me if Lin/Ded/Vince wants out to go to a playoff team, he's willing. Players have to be released by March 1st to be on playoff rosters.

That pick should have been top 3 protected, i didn't want Lin for a distant 2nd 5 years from now, prefered the Denver 2029 1st and Faried. Why the Dorsey trade? Cash Considerations?

Hawks are whoopin' good teams and only 7.5 out of playoffs. Could the thinking be, like Schlenk has mentioned in the past, if the rooks are developing ahead of schedule and they're competitive, would they press for the 8th seed and rely on the Mavs pick conveying? Lottery pick from Dallas to snag one of the wings Schlenk covets, our own late teens where he's had much success finding gems, AND some playoff burn for the rooks. Personally I'd LOVE that. We'd need Grizz to hard screen a Dallas slide into bottom 5 for us in that scenario.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
So, step back and think.
You really want to go through the torture of these last two years, and emerge with...
THE SAME DAMN THING?
If all you wanted was a playoff team, NONE OF THIS was necessary.
Dare I say it.
TRUST. THE. PROCESS.
I don't want no stinkin playoffs.
Because.
I don't want no stinkin Groundhog Day franchise.
There is no cornerstone talent on this roster yet. That's no small thing. That's a huge thing. That's a damning thing.

No no no.....with the Hawks luck, we end up 8th, get steamrolled by Bud and Giannis, pick #15, and the cherry on top the Dallas pick doesn't convey.

I agree that it's foolish to shoot for the playoffs this season (and it's not something we can realistically achieve anyway), but there is a huge difference between being a playoff team with young talent, multiple firsts, and $$$ to spend vs. the team that we had.

I beg to differ on the cornerstone talent thing, it's very possible that he is there.
Like I hinted at and I'm just going to straight up say now: What if Travis Schlenk thinks that Trae Young is his guy on a cornerstone player? And he's not worried about not doing anything more than doing things as they are outside of potentially signing a free agent.
There's a decent possibility that he's correct...if Trae can get from awful to merely below average on defense, he could be a top 20 player with his offense and passing, and that looks like a cornerstone player by my definition.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
Unless you believe there is a huge difference between exiting after the first playoff series and exiting after the second playoff series... I don't... there's really no difference.
This roster is not equipped yet to make serious Eastern Conference noise. There has to be a difference-maker player, in order to accomplish that, and it has to come through the draft.
If this draft only has 1 player who projects to be that kind of player, you have two choices that are logical.
You either construct a fantabulous trade package to move up to get that guy.
Or, you punt, and see what happens next draft.
One. Or the other.
Don't believe anyone who tells you they "know" what the next draft looks like, and more specifically, that they "know" there is no difference maker who will emerge. There is no such Nostradamus who can make that determination this early.
Just merely drafting more guys who can start for your team isn't actually going to move the needle appreciably enough to make the Hawks a threat.

Cornerstone player = perennial 1st or 2nd team All-NBA.
That's what you need to be a threat to win an NBA title, historically speaking.

I don't know if we have our 'Cornerstone' but since Schlenk's comments, we have an awesome 1-2 offensive punch in Tare and John. The task now is to continue to add talent to the team.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
I'm going to look at it this way: if you set the trend that you're just going to release vets after failing to find a trade for them 2 years in a row, it only weakens your bargaining position in the future.
So yea, hold on to them, show teams that if you want them? Come correctly. You're not going to just wait Schlenk out. Additionally I don't believe the group of Lin, Dedmon, and Vince would necessarily want out because I think they have decent camaraderie and chemistry with this group. Lin and Dedmon are likely more focused on new deals than playing on a contender so their ability to continue to showcase themselves is not hampered in Atlanta. Carter seems settled into a mentoring role more so than the desire to chase a ring.
If the worry is unnecessary wins... well the onus is on Pierce then to curtail that with some "creative" lineups in key situations. I'd think that LP would be more receptive to "the talk" from Schlenk and Ressler than a more accomplished coach like Bud.

Strong first paragraph. The one thing he didn’t do yesterday was give in to any deals that he didn’t like just to make a deal, which in turn at the very least strengthens negotiations with the same GM’s this summer and beyond.

Horford : Ship has sailed and if he were to resign, battery sales might go up in Atlanta...
Cousins: too much of a risk in the lockerroom. He needs vets that put him in his place. If he was THE vet to lead young guys, God help us all. No, never, ever.

I'm sure there's a few dusty boxes of Phillips LEDs laying around the 'Farm.
