2. The Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies each owe protected picks in the top 10. Should they do everything they can to keep their selections?

JG: ESPN's Basketball Power Index (BPI) gives the Mavs a 14.9 percent chance of keeping their top-five protected pick this season, which will remain top-five protected in 2020 if it's not conveyed. Dallas' pick currently is expected to land at 9.5 on average, as the team is on pace to finish with the 10th-worst record.

Considering where the Mavs are in the rebuilding process, I think it makes a lot of sense for them to do whatever they can to try to increase their chances of keeping their pick. They aren't going to make the playoffs, and there's not that much left to play for at this stage, so why not try to maximize your odds at getting one of these top four prospects? The middle of the lottery now comes with significantly greater odds to rise as well. The Mavs have three games left against Memphis, which could have a huge effect on their odds. This is easy for me to say -- as the players and coaching staff will have their own ideas -- but I'd play Dirk Nowitzki (427th in real plus-minus) 48 minutes per game from here on out.

Mavs won't be in the lottery next year, critical year for Hawks to get their pick

Mavs vs. Grizzlies is one of the biggest non-Hawks games for us to pay attention to this season. Memphis is getting close to hijacking our 5th-worst position (2.5 games out if they win) and of course we need Dallas to take Ls. Let’s go Grizz!

Much needed Memphis win.

Looking at tonight we need Chicago to win again.

dallas is messed up and one of the worst starting lineups in the league. they are finishing the season 6th or 7th i guess. they are so bad. i hope lottery gods wont help dallas and atlanta will end up with two top 6 picks.

Mavs just have incredible tanking potential. Trading 4 starters and starting Dirk is tanking par excellence. They should get 6th place with ease.

By trading entire first team (except Luka), starting Dirk, resigning Mejri to a deal, this team is directed to the rock bottom. It's by the far worst starting 5 in the NBA right now, and currently, they are even worse than the Suns team. All remaining bigs completely rely on Luka's passes and can't do a **** without him. In trades, they acquired 4 new players but only one of them is healthy and has some production (T. Hardaway Jr.). They have a tough schedule until the end of the season.

Some 5 games after trades, Luka was able to single-handedly keep Mavs in games and extract some nice wins, but it looks now he gave up. The only thing that keeps him in rhythm is ROTY race. So I expect maybe 5-15 record until the end of season.

The only dumb **** that Atlanta shouldn't do is to start winning. I expect other tanking teams to recall some guys from G-league on last 10 games of the season. I would even put TY to some load management a few games because the last thing you need right now is some injury.

I watch the games, they are a terrible team now. They usually need a tremendous game from Luka to win or Tim having one of his rare, Tim Superstar games. This team is going to bad with or without KP. Dallas made a bad trade.

Sorry, but I just have to explain few things. The starting unit we’re seeing is not the best Mavs possible starting unit. They play them because,

1. It’s Dirk’s last year.
2. They play DFS and Maxi less than they would have normally, because of the "starter criteria" which impacts their cap holds if they exceed playing time.
3. Tanking.

Not necessarily in this order.

Mavs @ Wizards

Wiz -6 o/u 232.5

Huge game for us as Hawks fans tonight. Currently the Wizards are the 7th worst team in the league by a game over 8th worst Dallas. If the Wiz win tonight, the Mavs are in a 7th place tie with them.

Mavs have dropped 8/10 and haven’t won on the road since Feb. 2nd in Cleveland.

The Wizards are a surprising 18-12 at home and only a few games out of the playoff picture.

LETS GO WIZARDS!!!

NBA lottery tracker: How good are the Mavericks' odds of keeping their top-5 protected pick this summer?

The Dallas Mavericks are headed for a finish among the NBA's draft lottery teams, that much does not appear to be in doubt. Entering Wednesday's action, the Mavericks are 13th in the Western Conference, eight games back of the last playoff spot and 2-8 in their last 10 games.

What isn't nearly as certain as their lottery finish is whether the Mavericks will actually get to keep the draft pick.

As part of the draft-night trade with Atlanta that landed Doncic last summer, the Mavericks dealt a top-five protected 2019 first-round pick to the Hawks -- meaning if Dallas' pick lands outside of the top five in the draft lottery, the pick is conveyed to Atlanta.

If the Mavericks finish within the top five or hit the lottery jackpot, they keep this year's pick and would then convey their 2020 first-round pick to the Hawks, regardless of draft position.

So, just how strong are the odds that Dallas keeps its top pick this summer?

Code: Select all

Lottery position    #1 pick    #2 pick    #3 pick    #4 pick

           6th      9.0%      9.2%      9.4%      9.6%
           7th      7.5%      7.8%      8.1%      8.5%
           *8th    6.0%      6.3%      6.7%      7.2%
            9th    4.5%      4.8%      5.2%      5.7%

Funny thing is...KP isn’t a difference maker either. I’m sure they’ll have great chemistry, but KP couldn’t move the needle for the Knicks. I doubt, even if healthy, he alone helps them win many more games. They were actually on the right track prior to blowing up their team. Cuban screwed the pooch trying to get cute.
