The form is there on his shot. He's going into year 3 of his career, and is already a plus defender. We can afford to let him develop his shot more if we're getting the defense he brings. His month of April suggests he may have already made the right tweak to his shot.

New addition Dyson Daniels will thrive in Atlanta

After months of trade speculation, the Hawks have finally parted ways with Dejounte Murray. The two-way ball-handler is heading to the Pelicans, with third year player Dyson Daniels headlining the return acquired by Atlanta. Daniels is a former top-10 pick and is still just 21 years old.

By adding Daniels, the Hawks are vastly improving their point-of-attack defense. His limited shooting and scoring ability make him a better fit than Murray, who demanded touches to be effective. Daniels will likely be tasked with focusing on the defensive end. He can switch actions to protect Trae Young, a questionable defender at times.

Code: Select all

"Daniels has two years left on a rookie deal that will pay him $6.1 million this year and $7.7 million next year. He struggles shooting and didn’t really fit in New Orleans because they had so many other suspect marksmen, but in Atlanta, he becomes a vital piece who may start to offset noted matador Young."
-John Hollinger of The Athletic

Atlanta is slowly putting pieces around Young that complement him. The focus is clearly on improving its defense, which has been putrid in recent years, ranking 27th in the NBA last season. Daniels will thrive as the core perimeter defender. He is also young enough to continue improving for five or six years.

The Hawks hope forward Jalen Johnson can develop into Young's star running mate. His presence on the wing has improved Atlanta on both sides of the ball and should ensure that the All-Star guard isn't forced to create all of his team's offense on his own. Heliocentric basketball isn't how teams win championships.

Young now has a team that can accentuate his skillset. He must take advantage and begin to prove his leadership credentials. Getting Daniels in return for Murray was a masterstroke. Now, he will have the opportunity to continue his development with high minutes within a starting lineup.

The Hawks are unlikely to be contenders soon, but at least they're making moves to position themselves for internal growth.

Hawks Twitter trying to talk themselves into believing Dyson will knock down 3s at an average rate this Fall.

Dyson is a swiss army knife type of player.

Strong POA defender, but not really '3 & D'.

Gotta keep that in mind when defining his role this year.

I'm hoping that whatever magic potion they rubbed on Vit to help his 3pt shooting, they have enough left for Dyson.
Korver has his work cut out for him. He

Keep in mind, while Daniels has been in the league for 3yrs he's been playing behind CJ & Herb the same duration. I think Daniels takes a step in consistent PT alone.

If any of you are willing, pull up the Pels/Mavs 2nd meeting of the season where Borrego was coaching in Greens absence. He opts to start Daniels with Herb, when CJ went down to injury. Catch a glimpse of what you traded for.

In this 10 game stretch where Daniels started over CJ, NO's beat 5 teams over 500. (Mavs, Denver, Clippers, Kings 2x, Minnesota) ... Jonas - ZIon - BI - Herb - Daniels +20 100 minutes

They did this with CJ, Nance, Jose, Murphy all out, no effective spacing & no bench production. Defense, transition & post efficiency.

Daniels was an ideal low usage defensive fit with ZIon, as he will be with Young. Murray can't touch Daniels defense & versatility. As I said pre trade, Daniels starts to make teams pay for leaving him open, yall laughing.

Yeah my error, 3yrs is how long CJ has been starting & ultimately blocking Daniels from getting consistent PT. During the above 10 game stretch I mentioned where the starters were good with Daniels starting, CJ said it would be an insult to go to the bench for a rookie. You have Daniels now because Green/NO's catered to CJ's veteran status. Despite him being our worse PO performer vs OKC on both ends, while Daniels was glued to the bench for his veteran status. lol

Jonas - Zion - BI - Herb - CJ (+1.5) 1450 minutes, they blame Jonas rim protection, run Nance

Nance - Zion - BI - Herb - CJ (-6.5) 140 minutes, it's not Jonas, it's CJ

Jonas - Zion - BI - Herb - Daniels (+20) 100 minutes, at a point Herb was not shooting well yet.

Daniels could not effectively space the floor but was strong in all other facets starting in the 10 games CJ missed. I thought he could have & should have continued to start to get the necessary reps in, I have posted literal pages on NO's board about the numbers I showed you above. As you see, the starters were +20 with him during a very tough stretch in the schedule that included some tough back to backs. They went 5 - 0 vs the top of the West with no effective spacing. The overall record however was average, affected by the lack of depth & bench production, including a 1 possession loss in mile high, 3 games in 4 nights, back to back, short 5 rotation players, including Zion on a rest day. If you want accuracy of his performances I'd suggest watching the individual games from the 2nd Mavs game on.

I don't really have to say anything, the first game you watch, will speak for itself. He's a better man defender & arguably better overall defender than Herb who just won first team, at 20. Herb has more seasoning & what appears to be a reliable shot now but Daniels has also shown that potential. You get him to where he can punish teams for leaving him open, you get the Lakers pick to land lotto lol

Murray was my suggested trade target at last yrs trade deadline. Due to the very fact NO's wanted to start CJ because of his veteran status & team spacing need. The intent was to keep Daniels to develop his shot behind Murray not replace him, lol. I specifically targeted Murray's team friendly 4yr contract to both mange the cap issue with BI's extension over having CJ & to hold future value in this new CBA for when Daniels would be ready to cheaply start.

Unfortunately, Daniels was the price of keeping Herb who is more offensively developed. IMO Hawks did well to pluck him. Think he will be an ideal back court fit with Young's need to be high usage ..

He will make an all-defensive team in the next two years.

He is focussing on putting on size over the offseason - looks jacked playing for Australia.

If you are interested he does a long interview with an Australian sports commentator

Many of us here look forward to him being a Hawk for many years. Some of us, including myself wanted him in the draft, but I didn't want him as much as New Otleans did at the time.
