Bittersweet for me. It was time to move on but I have a lotta respeck for that man and he did as good a job here as the circumstances will allow.

Thoughts on this candidate. kg?

I think he'd be a wonderful hire and would help recruit NFL caliber offensive players:

Report: Ken Whisenhunt to interview for Georgia Tech job Monday

Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will interview Monday for Georgia Tech’s head-coaching job, according to NBC’s Al Michaels, who offered the news during the broadcast of the Chargers-Steelers game Sunday night.

Whisenhunt is a Tech grad and was a teammate of athletic director Todd Stansbury in the early 1980’s. Whisenhunt has coached in the NFL since 1997 and has coordinated the Chargers offense since 2016.

People familiar with Stansbury’s thinking believe that he will interview additional candidates. Tech’s interest in Whisenhunt has created an uproar among Tech fans, deeming him a poor choice because of his lack of experience at the college level, among other reasons.

Whisenhunt has enjoyed success throughout his career – as a head coach, he led the Arizona Cardinals to their only Super Bowl berth in the 2008 season. The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl in the 2005 season with Whisenhunt serving as coordinator.

The Chargers rank fifth in total offense this season, were fourth in 2017 and 14th in his first season back with the team in 2016.

Buckle up ...

First, many among us have been opining for Whisenhunt since even before Johnson was hired. Yes, they've been holding a candle for this dude for that long. At that time, IIUC, he appeared to be more apt to pursue the NFL lifer route which he has done to some degree of success.

Here's the problem circa 2018, dude has no connection to either GT or college football overall. It's basically Chan Gailey all over again. Middling, unconnected worn out NFL OC, no longer NFL HC material (this is arguable w.r.t. KW) shoe-horned into a cfb HC position.

The #1 problem at GT isn't the offense, it's recruiting. Whisenhunt doesn't ring any bells in that regard simply because he was in the NFL. As I said, he has no cfb connections and no appeal to high schoolers.

The GT he knew no longer exists so they can't even sell that anymore. The requirements there have changed significantly even since I got out in '01. This dude graduated in the '80's. It's apples to onions at this point.

The only reason he's even being considered is because he was our current AD's teammate at Tech back in the day. Oh and allegedly our big money guys have been pushing for KW throughout out Johnson's tenure. Which is shameful considering Johnson begged for resources to compete and they wouldn't do it. He was here over 10 years and they finally approved minimal dollars to hire 4 recruiting assistants like last year. Bama, by comparison, has dozens plus former head coaches on staff. We have 4 minimally-paid rando's working against guys like former TN HC Butch Jones. - And, yes, we have the money to do that. We just choose not to. Then we ask guys to compete like Bama on the field. Really?

Had KW gone to any other school, there's no way he'd even be considered. I get that it sounds good but, when you peel back the layers, this is good ol' boy network cronyism at it's worst.

We should be looking at guys who can recruit and who are innovative.

I think he'd be an amazing choice. His offenses of late have been near the top of the NFL; he has a ring as an OC; he took another team to the SB as Head Coach.

That will carry weight with parents when they are looking for a place their young sons can compete on a big stage and have a legit shot at going pro.

He flamed out quickly in Tennessee.

But the rest of his tenure in the NFL has been solid to impressive.

NBA Trade Candidate Watch: Southeast Division

Dewayne Dedmon | C | Atlanta Hawks

$7.2MM cap hit; UFA in 2019

A popular subject of trade speculation last season, Dedmon stayed put at the deadline and ultimately ended up exercising his player option to remain in Atlanta for another year. There are reasons to believe that he’s more likely to be traded this time around.

For one, potential suitors may have been put off by his uncertain contract situation last year. This time, his status is clear — he’ll be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, so teams won’t have to worry about accounting for him on next year’s books.

Additionally, the Hawks may have some regrets about how they approached last season’s trade deadline, when they kept Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova, then bought them out after the deadline passed. Both players ended up with the Sixers, serving as important rotation pieces into the second round of the playoffs. This season, Atlanta may be less inclined to let solid contributors get away for nothing.

While Dedmon doesn’t necessarily have one specific skill that could be a difference-maker for a playoff team like Belinelli’s and Ilyasova’s floor-spacing abilities were, he’s a solid big man who has some previous postseason experience under his belt, and he shouldn’t be overly expensive.

^ This again? Philly wanted is to take Bayless and his $9.5 mil and a 2nd for Beli/Illy. Had we done that Bayless would be on the roster this season. Would we have been able to make the Dennis trade or the Lin trade. Would Philly still trade for Moose.

You don't make a cfb hire to appeal to parents.

Anyways, moving on ....

Sounds like Urban Meyer's also retiring (supposedly health related so I hope all is well).

True. But that Super Bowl Ring of his will go a long way towards impressing the youngsters.

Not to mention he'll get to name drop Hall Of Famers like Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, Phillip Rivers, Hines Ward, Larry Fitzgerald -- and how they all thrived under his guidance.

You guys might actually get a 5 star QB to come play for Tech in a wide open ACC Coastal.

Be more excited for this. GT could have a juggernaut offense within three seasons, which should only open up more avenues for recruiting elite, NFL-caliber talent.

You're blowing my mind right now so I'm gonna bow out of this discussion. Put it this way, every school in the ACC and SEC would love for us to hire someone like Whisenhunt. Ask them.

It's worse than you think...no one cares about GT Football outside of the metro Atlanta area.

Nor have they in decades.

^LOL

The thing is...I grew up in Atlanta rooting for Georgia Tech. But when I left for college (January 1998), I quickly realized no one cared about any of our city's sports teams except for the Braves.

I was a huge fan of the Yellow Jackets teams under George O'Leary. Joe Hamilton is my favorite collegiate athlete of all time (in a tie with Peter Warrick).

But there hasn't been much to celebrate there in the past 17 years.

So hearing that other teams want us to hire a proven NFL O-coordinator because they think he'll fail...I don't buy it.

Because no one cares who we hire. We have the easiest division in all of the power five conferences. Yet we consistently are middle of the pack in the ACC Coastal.

Spoiler:
A huge fear I have, any college coaching lifer we bring in will simply see the GT position as a stepping stone to a higher profile gig in a couple of years.

Whisenhunt at least seems unlikely to go that route and is unlikely to get another HC gig in the pros.

At this point...what does GT have to lose by aiming high and thinking outside the box?

NOTE: The previous NFL coordinator we brought in as head coach (Chan Gailey) was a mediocre HC and play-caller, but undeniably brought in a number of NFL caliber recruits.

Lol not sure I thought some of you guys were like 50. Brad is actually in his early 30’s I think..maybe 32 but he speaks like he’s been a Hawks fan longer than 14 years and he hasn’t as he stated he became a fan in 2004.

Sometimes I think you are him jaamal, then I think...how dare me, he’s a white guy and as you have mentioned many times you are not because...your name is Jamaal ...which is kind of humorous in its own right.

Wendell was ur guy and Luka was mine. Let’s let it go and root for our guy Trae!

Whatddya say ya old son of a gun?

Return to Atlanta Hawks
