Did they really tweet "Him and Trae Young"? I don't care about grammar on message boards but if you're a supposed media company please get someone to proofread these things.

LOL

In his defense, I get the feeling 'Draft Lead' is just some kid cutting video clips and tweeting them out from his college dorm room.

I don't want to jinks the guy, but Huerter is currently shooting 45% from three. and Omari's got 40% from three.

^ I can't wait until they trade Baz mid season so that they can give Bembry starter minutes

^Now that is a bold prediction.

I suppose he would be the obvious choice for a replacement. Long term -- I just really like Bembry's current role off the bench.

I'd support Huerter getting those starts as well.

Huerter Finding His Groove with Hawks

Former Maryland guard Kevin Huerter scored 12 points in a career-high 29 minutes Saturday night in the Atlanta Hawks’ 123-118 win over the Miami Heat.

Huerter’s performance came after he suffered an ankle injury in a game against the Sacramento Kings two days prior. He was originally listed as questionable, but ended up going toe-to-toe with childhood idol Dwyane Wade and turning in one of the best performances of his young career, building off a career-high 13 point effort against the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier last week.

Huerter is starting to come into his own with the Hawks. He’s made 11 of his last 16 shots, including six three-pointers, and is the only one on his team with a positive net rating (+12.4).

Perhaps it should’ve been no surprise that the rebuilding Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak with Huerter playing the most minutes in his career Saturday night. Atlanta’s other two wins this season are the only other games Huerter has played more than 17 minutes. Huerter’s plus-minus ranks third among rookies behind lottery picks DeAndre Ayton and Miles Bridges.

It appears Huerter already has the offensive part of his game figured out. He is the only rookie shooting above 40 percent from three on more than 20 attempts and his two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio is fourth-best among his non-PG peers. He also ranks in the top-five among rookies in true shooting percentage (61.9) and assist ratio (21.6).

Nine games into the season, Huerter appears to be establishing chemistry with fellow rookie Trae Young as well. Young, who is among the top contenders for NBA Rookie of the Year, found Huerter with this touchdown pass in the third quarter of Saturday’s game. Huerter then found Young on the next possession for one of his three assists.

Hawks’ Rookies impressing with early season shooting numbers

Shooting has become the name of the game in the NBA. If you don’t have it, you’re not going to win. Nobody knows that better than Travis Schlenk and he has begun to implement this brand of basketball in Atlanta. Take a look at the shooting stats for each of the Hawks rookies this year:

  • Trae Young- 19.1 points on 43.8% from the field and 32.1% from 3-pt range
  • Kevin Huerter- 5.7 points on 46.2% from the field and 45.8% from 3-pt range
  • Omari Spellman- 6.6 points on 45.5% from the field and 42.1% from 3-pt range

Only 9 games into the season, I would say it’s already starting to look pretty successful.

All three can clearly shoot, no doubt.

These NBA Rookies Deserve More Minutes Now

Kevin Huerter | Atlanta Hawks

Image

It's understandable why coach Lloyd Pierce has taken it slowly with Kevin Huerter, who missed summer league, saw limited preseason action and checks in at 6'7", 190 pounds. But now it's time to set him free based on the comfort level he's demonstrated early.

One of the draft's top shooters out of Maryland, Huerter continues to look convincing from behind the arc, having hit 11 of his first 31 threes with a quick, effortless release. And though shooting has been identified as his signature, go-to skill, Huerter's mix of ball-handling ability and vision translates to valuable secondary playmaking.

He averaged 3.4 assists last year at Maryland, and he's dished out at least three assists in each of the four games he's logged 20-plus minutes.

Given the fact that Atlanta is rebuilding and he's a key piece moving forward, the time is now to let Huerter build confidence.

Trav's draft selections took some serious criticism on draft night. But his picks are looking solid across the board in early returns. He's had 4 first round draft picks, and all look like long term rotation players in the league.

That's damn good.

As far as Omari Spellman goes, no one knew what to fully expect from him being drafted with the final pick in the first round in June. We’re more than a dozen games into the season and, to this point, he has shown he can be a hustle guy and a reliable outside shooter, though some other areas of his game are lacking.

Spellman has averaged 20.1 minutes for the Hawks this season while averaging 6.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. In the beginning of the season, the Atlanta Hawks started Vince Carter over Spellman, possibly due to all of his experience in the NBA, but for the past few games, head coach Lloyd Pierce has allowed Spellman to enter into the starting lineup and he’s taken full advantage of it.

Since Spellman became a part of the starting unit, he’s averaging 7.2 points and 6.5 rebounds while posting his first two career double-doubles. Each game, the rookie big man is becoming more and more comfortable in that role, even on the heels of a struggling performance against the Warriors.

We should be extremely encouraged that Spellman and Heurter have already shown they belong in the NBA. We've gotten precious little from those spots in the draft in the past.
