Trade talk likely to heat up. Hawks have plenty of flexibility and once again the team isn't playing well.

Still seems like the parts aren't clicking into a winning formula. A lot of youth and inexperience though

The only two players I see with control that could be moved for cap reasons are Hunter and Bog... maybe OO but doubt it. Am I miscalculating?

I know we want to win this season and continue to improve going forward, but we also know that odds are the team stays below the first apron next season

Dyson will be eligible for an early extension but his salary won't kick in until the following season- similar to JJ this year.
Bogi may be likely due to age and contract since his last year is a team option.
Hunter is always the wild card - he has to stay on the floor.

I would expect Bogi to be the first dumped. You do need to replace his offensive output somehow.

I know Hunter is a controversial player. He can't stay on the floor, is always injured, ect. However by many metrics his offensive game is coming around some. Compare him to Ingram for a second in most offensive measures (%s, ts%, ts+) and get back at me how Ingram is worth 50 million but Hunter is woefully overpaid at more than half that amount.

We are missing a ton of open 3s. While giving them up at a historical rate.
As much as Trae is struggling with his 3pt shooting, he's still the best of our starters (prior to bulls games). Just now reliable volume spacers.
Our best 3pt shooters are low volume in Nance and Garri, but they can't get any real run since Quin is stuck in 9 man rotation land.
On the other side, we have no idea how to defend the 3. Doing everything wrong.

While I prefer to build around Trae, this deal is very attractive to me.

If healthy and chemistry right, we will win a lot of games. That said, we still got clear issues.

I don't think he's 'untouchable' but it has to be for the right deal - make the Hawks better for now and future.

I do believe he will be moved...as a courtesy.

I doubt we get much in return for an undersized, backup Center on an expiring contract.

But what do I know....

I'm not sure what the Hawks can offer, but I would love to add another post defender like Robert Williams

Steven Adams would also be a great pick up for a contending team like the Hawks.

Robert Williams seems attainable.  $12-$14m per season.

We need to view teams like Portland as a feeder team to use. Like teams, have probably viewed us over the years.

Bold Trade Suggestion:

https://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/8819537

  • Bulls get off Lavine at the cost of a very protected draft pick, get younger with MPJ
  • Nuggets get off MPJ's contract, reunite Jokic with Bogdan and get an experienced scorer
  • Hawks get Lavine to serve as the backup PG, backup SG, 3rd scorer, floor spacer

Hawks Trade:
Bogdan Bogdanovic
Larry Nance, Jr.

Hawks Acquire:
Zach Lavine
Protected 1st Round Portland Pick (via Chicago)

Nuggets Trade:
Michael Porter, Jr.

Nuggets Receive:
Bogdan Bogdanovic

Bulls Trade:
Zach Lavine

Bulls Receive:
Michael Porter, Jr.

+30 million added to next seasons payroll with JJ's extension. $191 million payroll?? Over the Luxury Tax? I'm unconvinced Ressler will ever pay the tax.

That is a lot of money to eat for what will basically become a 2028 2nd.

The only thing that world makes sense is to refuse to trade Nance to increase the price and trade him later, but they have to hope that teams won't see that he's the worst Net rating of ATL

I've always like his game, and understand why some Hawks fans want to see him play more, but it seems he's getting older, he has the worst impact of the team with Mathews, to the point that they shouldn't hesitate to trade them.

Now, I would never do this Lavine trade

Yeah. The money is an issue. But Zach's only got 1.5 years guaranteed on his contract.

It's a risk, for sure...maybe we ask for more in draft compensation?

This team needs a pure scorer, a backup PG and some shooting.
Zach Lavine covers each of those issues.

MPJ is such a good shooter that I doubt Denver moves him in this proposal

Lavine is risky, not because of the money owed to him, but he doesn't play defense. We must pass on acquiring him.
