Eggzactamundo. And will highly likely hit on the 2 top 10 picks this draft too. His 2-yr “rebuild” included picking Collins, Young, Huerter, and 2 top 10s this year. Toss in that he helped construct the current Warriors dynasty, the draft night trade, and probable heavy input in selecting Coach El-P and I agree, genius.

Only Schlenk knew Mavs would finish 8th. Vegas and 538 all had Mavs winning 50+ games. Oh wait, no they didn't.

They will be in the tiebreaker lottery. 7th gets one extra ball than 8th and 8th gets one extra ball than 9th.

It's like a week before the lottery. We were in it last year and the year before.

Won two years ago. Ended up with the 19th pick. Turned out to be John Collins.

Lost last year to Dallas, ended up higher in the lottery, got the 3rd pick, traded it back to Dallas in our lost spot while gaining a pick this year. We drafted Luka and traded him for Trae Young

2 teams tied with Mavs equally share a 26% chance of landing a top 4 pick. Tie breaker for slots 7-9 is random I guess and odds are:

7 seed:
7th - 19.7%
8th - 37.2
9th - 15.1%

8 seed:
7th - no odds
8th - 31.2%
9th - 34.1%
10th - 8.0%

9 seed:
7th - no odds
8th - no odds
9th - 46.4%
10th - 24.3%

We obviously want the 7th seed while Mem is looking to convey that pick to Bos with 9th seed odds. I wouldn't be all that mad if Mem lands a top 4 pick since they gave us the shot of getting the 7th overall pick.

No, in the tiebreaker, everyone has the same odds. It's just that the highest gets an extra ball or in this case, two extra balls.

Thanks, K-Supes. There's like a block over this whole thing for me mentally.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why the Grizzlies would be so foolish as to win that final game when that alone could cause them to lose their draft pick this summer.

The only reasonable incentive to gift Boston their pick this year, is because:

a) They'll be looking to move future picks and the pending obligation to gift one to the Celtics would hinder that goal; (seems unlikely)

b)they plan on getting really bad in the future and expect to be picking in the top-5 in future drafts and don't want that pick going anywhere else.

IIUC, they want to convey the pick this year to avoid the escalating protections on it in subsequent years. IIRC, it's top-6 protected next year, then unprotected the year after that.

Since they are clearly planning on trading Conley and going the tank route, they don't want to have this pick "bill" due to BOS next year. Get it outta the way now.

I suppose.

It just seems ideal to convey a pick outside of the top-10 to Boston. If I were in their shoes, I'd have tanked hard post-Gasol trade to ensure a top-6 selection this season and then worked feverishly to at least win 20+ games next season with a couple of cornerstones in place from consecutive lottery appearances.

Sending anyone a top-10 selection seems NOT awesome.

But sending a pick between 11-19 is fairly :dontknow:

Research ...

Honestly, this seems clear to me. Giving them the pick this year allows them to avoid giving them a better pick in subsequent years.

Simple.

I get what you're saying. I just believe bottoming out this season and conveying the pick in the future is more ideal than bottoming out next season and conveying the pick now.

But that's also contingent on how quickly you believe they can turn things around.

Side NOTE: How crazy is it that Boston got more in return for trading Jeff Green than Hawks got in return for Josh Smith, AL Horford and Paul Millsap combined? It boggles the mind that we consistently let top players walk away in free agency for little to nothing in return.

Boston is the best at getting value in their trades. Ainge seems to hypnotize other GM's, I dont get how he does it.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
