Salary cap projection - What it means?

The salary cap is now being projected at 56.1M for next year.

That's higher than early estimates and has several implications.

#1) that would result in a luxury tax threshold of approx. 68M
#2) it means that with a a little renouncing that 8 teams have money for a max free agent (NY, Mia, Chi, NJ, Sac, LAC, Was, Min)
#3) it means that the Hawks can pay Joe the max without paying luxury tax.
#4) the Hawks might be able to hold onto Mo Evans even if he opts out (up to about 4.6M offer)
#5) if those 2 things happened we'd be done (no room for more signings).

I'm not saying we should do these things, but we could without paying the luxury tax. Early projections had it possible that we'd have to pay the tax just to keep Joe.

How much cap room would we have for another team's Free Agent if we lose JJ (and maybe renounce the rights to Mo and Josh childress)? Would we have enough to maybe take a stab at Rudy Gay?

I think the Hawks are going to bring back Josh Childress and use the MLE but Joe is out of here.

about 9-10M in year 1, but if you renounce all those hold, you lose the MLE, so that is 9-10 to add anything to the roster to replace Joe and Mo. Also note that given the number of teams with a lot of cap space that we could easily be outbid for Rudy Gay.
