New Hawks Off-Season Plan (if JJ and Woodson bolt)...

COACH:
Hire Tom Thibodeau
why?
He's one of the best defensive coaches in the L. I think he could really help take the Hawks to the next level.

DRAFT:
#24 pick - Solomon Alabi
why?
Project 7'footer with a lot of upside. He could turn into a poor man's Mutombo.

#53 pick - Greivis Vasquez
why?
A true leader who works hard every night. He'd be a great addition to the 2nd unit.

TRADE (between Atlanta, Golden State, & Memphis):
Hawks get:
O.J. Mayo
Hasheem Thabeet
Corey Maggette

Warriors get:
Josh Smith
Marvin Williams (once his BYC status is removed)
Lester Hudson

Grizzlies get;
Monta Ellis

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
We get a great replacement for JJ in Mayo. He has shown the ability to be a very good scorer and could actually be a better fit in Iso situations. We also get a legit center in Thabeet which would allow us to move Horford to PF. Yes, he's still rather raw, but could become productive if given steady minutes. Maggette would give us another lethal scorer off the bench.

FREE AGENCY:
Sign Travis Outlaw - 3 years/18 million (using the mid-level exception)
why?
He would be a very good replacement for Williams at the 3 spot. He can hit the 3 and is extremely athletic.

Sign James Singleton - 1 year/1.5 million
why?
Singleton is a high energy, hard working role player who'd be good to have off the bench.

NEW HAWKS ROSTER:
PG-Mike Bibby/Jeff Teague
SG-O.J. Mayo/Jamal Crawford/Greivis Vasquez
SF-Travis Outlaw/Corey Maggette
PF-Al Horford/James Singleton
C-Hasheem Thabeet/Zaza Pachulia/Solomon Alabi

-This team is much more balanced and deeper than the current incarnation. We don't spend much money this off-season, which is okay since we need to extend Horford and Crawford soon.

You never lack for creativity, pja.

I love James Singleton at that cost.
Indifferent on Outlaw. Might be a tad too much money for him.
Like the Alabi pick; don't expect him to be available.
DO NOT WANT the Maryland combo. He's a perfect Euro guard, but not NBA quality IMHO.
Fine with Thibodeau, but expect Sund to opt for a vet coach.

The trade is the biggest part of your proposal:

Fine with Maggette (the anti-Joe) if Joe goes. My problem is that I think he'd be available with a TPE acquired from a S&T of Joe. If you buy that logic, then the trade is essentially Thabeet/Mayo -for- Smith/Williams. Wow. That's a risky move. Can Mayo & Maggette co-exist? Is Thabeet good enough to start?

I agree, it's a risky move. I don't think the question will be "Can Mayo and Maggette co-exist?" but rather "Can Crawford and Maggette co-exist?" since Maggette would come off the bench. I think they'll be able to adjust, but it could blow up in our faces since both want to score as many points as possible off the bench. The deal would work with Maggette/Williams taken out.

Only problem with this plan is that Travis Outlaw is not worth nearly that much. He didn't do anything on the Clippers but chuck the ball. Also, it would be hard to pay Maggette that much not to start. Other than that I think it's good rebuilding plan, though I would use that Outlaw money to sign Blake or Ridnour. I'd also try and get another cheap SF like Q Ross.

I'm not ready to deal Josh or Marvin without seeing them with a different coach and different system. I favor Alabi to Thabeet and consider both to be big projects just Thabeet to be much more expensive. Not sure that Vasquez has the athleticism to play in the NBA, but that's a low risk draft pick so I'd rather try him than spend it on a European that we'll never hear from again.

I don't like your plan, but I give you create for creativity.

Also while I don't like Maggette's contract, you got to appreciate his ability to get to the line. If Joe could actually do that he might be worth close to what he'll get paid in the off-season.

The Hawks have a lot of holes as we have seen against the Magic. We're stuck in a division with the best center in the NBA in D. Howard, so our #1 priority should be a true 7footer. Last year, I really thought a team could get A. Bogut for cheap. Not anymore. This time around, I think Al Jefferson can be acquired for a reasonable price. While he's not going to stop D. Howard, i know defense isn't his specialty, he's a great rebounder, puts a lot of pressure on a team's defense and can score the ball failry well. I'm more than ready to see J. Smith go, well, I've been ready for years anyway. Maybe the T-Wolves can enterntain a trade around him.

Getting to the line is exactly what I saw in Marvin two season ago if I am not wrong, but since last year and developing a three point shot, he's not doing it.

I don't blame the 3 point shot because when Marvin drives these days it is with low confidence. He rarely seems to have the ball in hold well enough to get to the line or the shot off. I'm hoping he has some confidence boosting exercises this summer.

I think JJ needs to go. He's done great things during his time in ATL, but it's time for all parties to move on. We could use the money better elsewhere.

I propose SNT JJ for D. Lee. I think both players and teams involved are looking for new directions to go in. It also allows Al to move to PF as he reunites with his old college teammate and fellow All-Star. This also gives us flexibility as far as what to do with Smoove and Marvin. And now we'd have a real center finally (albeit not a huge defensive presence).

As a Clipper fan, I would propose Kaman for J. Smith and I would even take either Bibby or Zaza's contract too, using our cap space.

That's really tempting, but where you gonna play Josh? He can't guard SF's...

If you want to change all the lineup, it will take some weeks this summer, and how we find a coach if the guy has no idea of what the roster will be.

The important things:
Woodson has to go because he did not improve the team since Bibby is here. It's only when Bibby came than the team start to play at more than .500.
It makes now 3 first-round going to a 7 games, and now 2 second sweep.
It's time to change that.

Crawford has no more impact on this team than Murray, maybe due to a bad use of him by Woodson.
He made some dream for little kids with his dribbling skills, but we did not improve from last year.
It's the big mistake from last summer, unless Joe leaves, but I am afraid of a Crawford leader scorer here.
