Hard Nosed Defensive Role Player during his NBA Days

Apprentice under the best X's and O's basketball coach in the league these days.

In the AJC's profile of potential Head Coaches:

The candidate

Tyrone Corbin

Background: His 15-year playing career included a stint with the Hawks from 1996-99. Corbin played in 1,065 NBA games and totaled 1,228 steals. After working in player development with the Knicks in 2003-04, Corbin joined the coaching staff of Utah's Jerry Sloan.

Why he might fit: Sloan enthusiastically endorses Corbin, which presumably means the protege believes in the same principles: tough-nosed defense and crisp offensive sets. If Corbin could bring a similar approach to the Hawks that would be a good start.

Why he might not fit: Corbin's never been a head coach. As much as the Hawks are considered a young team, they've been in the playoffs three years in a row, so a head coach learning on the job could be a drawback.

The intangibles of Sloan, but still young enough to relate to the younger players. I'd gladly go through the learning curve of an average season or two if it meant we'd get a steady solution to coach the hawks for the next 20 years.

I'd be down for Corbin as well. I remember him from his playing days when he had the stint with the Hawks from 96-99. He was always a solid player and now has been learning from Sloan. Avery and Corbin are actually my top 2 choices right now.

I wish our ownership wasn't so cheap and could actually go after the high dollar coaches.

If we're not interviewing Thibs, which it seems we aren't, I'd like Corbin.

More recently from AJC regarding Ty Corbin

Tyrone Corbin: The former Hawk is an assistant coach for Utah’s Jerry Sloan, one of the great and under-appreciated coaches in NBA history. That’s good enough for me. Corbin is thought of highly
enough that he’s considered Sloan’s heir apparent. He also has been mentioned for openings in Chicago and New Orleans. Pretty strong comments from Jazz guard Wesley Matthews in the Salt LakeTribune: “He’ll be a great head coach some day.” Why? “His passion for the game, and he’s tough. But he understands everything, too. And he’s going to make you better. That’s what you want from your coach.”

Corbin believes his association with Sloan and veteran lead assistant Phil Johnson since 2004-05 is a huge benefit when other teams start examining his credentials.
With Corbin on the staff, the Jazz have won two Northwest Division titles, qualified for the playoffs five straight times and reached one Western Conference final.

Six years with one team, under one head coach running a proven system. That is the model of consistency and stability.
