Grizzlies Trade Scenarios

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Wed May 19, 2010 3:41 pm

So the wiretap says Memphis is willing to ship its 12, 25, and 28 for "an impact player." Here's my two shots at a deal:

Deal 1

S&T Joe Johnson (~$15-16 million), Mo Evans ($2.5m), #24 pick, 2011 2nd round
for
OJ Mayo ($4.5m), Thabeet ($4.8m), Ronnie Brewer ($3.8m, QO), Haddadi ($1.6M), #12 pick

We get a great young replacement for JJ, a very underrated wing defender in Brewer, a project defensive big man, and a higher pick. Memphis gets to trot out a lineup of Conley/JJ/Gay/Z-Bo/Gasol, as well as a solid 7th man, which is IMO good for 48-50 wins.

ATL
Teague/Bibby/Mayo
Mayo/Crawford/Brewer
Marvin/Brewer/#12 pick (maybe James Anderson?)
Smoove/Horford
Horford/Thabeet/Zaza

MEM
Conley/Johnson/#25 - Eric Bledsoe
Johnson/Evans/Young
Gay/Carroll/Young
Z-Bo/Arthur/Carroll
Gasol/#24 - Solomon Alabi/Arthur

Deal 2
Josh Smith ($11.6m), Mike Bibby ($5.6m)
for
Marc Gasol ($3.5m), OJ Mayo($4.5m), Mike Conley ($4.9m), Haddadi ($1.6m), #28 pick

We get a legitimate C to let Al play his natural position, as well as our future SG. Conley isn't a great PG, but I think he's around Bibby's tier, and he's younger. Memphis does this to get a pair of athletic monsters in Gay/Smith with excellent interior defense and shotblocking.

ATL
Conley/Teague/Mayo
Mayo/Crawford/Evans
Marvin/Evans
Horford/#28 pick - not sure here, but ideally we'd want a PF who can also play some SF/Gasol
Gasol/#24 pick - lots of decent big men here/Zaza

MEM
Bibby/#25 pick - Eric Bledsoe
Gay/Brewer/Young
Josh Smith/Carroll/Young
Z-Bo/Arthur/Carroll
Thabeet/#12 pick - Motiejunas or Orton/Arthur

Let me know if you think of these deals.

At Heisley's behest, the Grizzlies will look to make their own luck this offseason. The owner and chief decision-maker declared that his starters will return intact. Heisley said the Grizzlies' main mission will be finding impact players to contribute off the bench.

Way to crush my hopes.

What about overall trade value though?

I could figure out some scenarios under which the Grizz would be interested in Marvin Gaye and Mike Bibbles, if Atlanta loses out on JJ and decides to dump...

How? Their only bench players are Brewer (QO), Thabeet ($4.8 mil), and a whole bunch of scrubs/bad rooks being paid ~$1m each.

EDIT* Unless you're talking a small deal like Bibby for Haddadi/Sam Young/Arthur and the 25. I can't see us moving Marvin though, unless Memphis would entertain a Thabeet + filler + 12 deal.

Conley is debatable as a starter...They've never seemed to keen on him, weirdly enough.

Their draft picks would be mobile, too.

Deal 2
Josh Smith ($11.6m), Mike Bibby ($5.6m)
for
Marc Gasol ($3.5m), OJ Mayo($4.5m), Mike Conley ($4.9m), Haddadi ($1.6m), #28 pick

Memphis would be getting raped in this trade.

 Oh, come on. The Grizzlies probably could pick a better player then Bibby with the 25. pick.

I have a problem with the other trade scenarios too. You put together the trades just by the salaries, there is no reason why the Memphis would give up on OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol, Mike Conley (3 of their starters) and a first round pick, for a highlight player.

Yeah, but that player wouldn't have a posse. Having a posse is something that's criminally underrated since the mid-90's. It's only a matter of time before that comes back around.

Yeah, but that posse worth’s a very talented and productive Sam Young, a decent big like Haddadi and a solid bench player like Arthur? I don't think so.
