So does that mean Casey is going to be the new head coach of the Hawks for sure? I would love for ASG to interview Jeff Van Gundy or Byron Scott.

So the Hawks brought back a coach after having the worst record in the entire league over the course of his 1st contract but are going to hand the team over to someone like Dwayne Casey after winning 100 games during the 2 years of his second contract?

It appears that it's going to come down to Larry Drew, Dwane Casey, and Mark Jackson for us.

Avery Johnson is a good fit for New Jersey if he handles the youth on the team appropriately. He has a temper and has never exactly cared much about the young players, but maybe he made Devin Harris a better player, and now they'll reunite once again.

In comparison to when he Coached Dallas, Avery has an upgrade at the 5, the GM, and the second richest owner. Mark Cuban's money is basically pocket change to what Mikhail Prokhorov has.

I have posted it numerous times that it baffles me that our ownership or any ownership that wins over 50 games would hire an assistant or someone with no experience. The ASG is probably the only 50 win team that would even seriously consider this type of hiring.

The Pistons are the only team I can remember doing tyhe same thing...but it wasn't because they wanted to save money. They fired Carlisle to pay Larry Brown big money and then fired Brown to pay Flip Saunders big money. Gearon just thinks the fans are idiots and the Hawks reluctance to use the MLE or outbid another team for a proven coach(in both 2008 and 2010)prove that.

However, The Hawks holding off a bit may be related to Doc Rivers and his availability which I know has been mentioned. His home is in Orlando... If SVG goes and Doc goes to Orlando maybe we pic up SVG.

It could even be free agent related.... I hope this is the case. Not to drop the L word but what if you courted Bosh with the same reverence that Lebron has been getting. Come to Atlanta an you pic your coach!

1. Doc isn't coming to Atlanta, if he leaves Boston it is to take time off from coaching.
2. On the bright side I won't have to hear Avery Johnson on ESPN any more. What a grating voice. Now if Magic Johnson could somehow get a gig taking him away from TV.
3. The full MLE has proven to be a bad investment for other teams if you look at the player signed. Gearon is right about that. Where he misses the boat is that the MLE and Bird rights are the only methods to grow your team payroll passed the cap limit. In essence you create a new salary cap limit for your team by trading expiring deals for longer deals. It's a flaw to the system but this is how certain teams that spend more can field deeper more talented teams while a team trying to stay around the cap will have trouble competing.
4. Logic says that if you have a 50 win team you only fire the coach if he's peaked and you are trying to get even better. We're in the odd situation of it being apparent that the 50-win coach had completely lost the team in the end. It was almost a required firing. I think that is why they are hopeful that a lateral move won't be an utter failure and could help by just being a different voice. Of course, everyone outside the ASG can see the potential failure on the horizon.
5. Lebron, come to Atlanta, we'll let you be player-coach.

Full MLE makes sense if you're a championship team. Artest got the MLE, and he demolished Durant and has done great against Pierce.

Why don't we go back to player-coaching? I mean, it hasn't been done in a few decades, but I think statistically there are only a handful of coaches who create value, and if it could get the ASG to loosen up the purse strings a bit in the salary they'd save on a coach and spend it on players, I would much prefer that. Heck, maybe this would be a decent way for Bibby to earn his current contract.
