Gearon is basically the GM. I don't think Sund had any say in retaining/firing Woody in 2008 or with hiring Larry Drew.

Yahoo! is reporting that the Atlanta Hawks have hired assistant coach Larry Drew to become the team's next coach. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=m ... drew061110

Why in the world would they hire an assistant that was part of Woodson? Horrible hire.

Does this move make any sense to you guys? I don't know how I feel about it really but if we're rolling with Drew, we may has well kept Woody. Oh well! Go Hawks, I guess.

So, according to Sekou (http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2010/06/1 ... nt-frenzy/), the GMs castrated Sund, forcing their choice on him.

They hire a professional but won't let him work. First Knight, now Sund. Why bother having a GM? And what other team's GM is ever going to take Sund's word for ANYthing?

Drew may work out but this is a terrible way to do business.

The reason San Antonio's assistant GM and Cleveland's assistant GM turned the Hawks down in 2008 is because the ASG would not hire a GM unless they agreed to re-sign Woodson. Gearon is really no different than Belkin to be honest.

I actually don't mind hiring Drew given the alternatives. Dwayne Casey's track record doesnt impress me and Jackson has never coached on any level. All of them would have come dirt cheap but atleast you know the players are going to play hard for Drew.

Marvin can continue his long embraces with Drew during pregame.

Sund isn't any better, he screwed up in Seattle big time.

Larry Drew has the experience for this job, and some of the player he has coached throughout his career are Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson.

Coach Woodson was more of a friend to his player and Larry Drew needs to make sure his players are well aware who the boss is. It was painful to watch our timeouts this past season because our players never seemed to pay attention to Coach Woodson.

Then you don't hire him.

But since they DID, they should have the sense to use him. Otherwise, why bother?

Drew is either going to continue Woodson's way or he'll have to explain why he let Woodson fail.

All I can add to this hiring is Evil will get his wish and see how one of the assistant coaches can bring out the best in Smoove and Marvin.
I think I already know the answer to that scenario.

Actually, I think this is the worst thing possible in that area. Marvin and Smoove needed a new voice. They are used to Drew already so him becoming the head coach accomplishes little or nothing. And was there some key piece of knowledge that he possessed that he didn't share with them because he was an assistant and now he shall reveal it? I can't believe that. This is an attempt at continuity because someone in ownership thinks the team's progress has been good, but that Woodson was the only problem. That's naive. The players tuned out the coaching staff not just Woodson.

You're right that I wanted to see if a new voice could get more out of Josh and Marvin, but that isn't what I feel I got in this promotion. What I think I got was the lowest bidder got the contract. I hope Drew can surprise me, but I don't think this was the best course of action. It doesn't really matter though because with our ownership group I think the team has already peaked in accomplishment.

As soon as Drew's name began to get mentioned for the job we should have seen this coming. There's no reason anyone should look at this as anything other than a financial decision. Drew should be embarrassed for taking the job with that salary and only 2 years guaranteed. What new coach doesn't get a 2nd year?
