I just wanted to declare that if those constant buzz noise makers from the soccer games ever reach US arenas that I will stop attending games.

Too sensitive or do you agree?

I'm not a soccer fan...but could you explain why their are horns blowing during every single game? It seems kind of pointless to just randomly blow horns if it isn't giving your team(country) a home field advantage.

It's just the same problem that came in some Euro competition in basket-ball.
I don't remember exactly if it was in the last Euro or the previous one, but there were some country fans with horns. It was air horns, and even if I can accept some guys trying to make rhythm noise to motivate their team at the needed moment, I can't stand this continuous noise, that makes no sens at all: there is no difference between when your team has the ball, or not, there is no difference between when they need support or not,...

I supposed they initially used horns to make more noise because they are not majority in the arena, which is always the case in any international competition, except for the country where it takes place), .

For this World Cup, I suppose only South Africa fans were the one who wanted to use it, to support their country.
It's called Vuvuzela, and seems to be used in South Africa. I was surprise they did a continuous noise, but thought at first it would be only for South Africa games. Then comes the second game, and still the same noise !!!
- it looks like some South Africans are going to all the games and use the horns each game
- I saw some plastic horns (there were wood horn at first), which means fans of other countries had certainly found a dealer of cheap horns, and every fans will use it, trying they have to make more noise than the other fans

I had some pain to follow basket-ball games with continuous noise, but if it's another sport, that's another level.

If the South Africans are going to blow these horns during every game...then FIFA should ban it from the stadium. I understand that it's apart of their culture as the host city but why do they feel the need to do it during every game? I honestly don't understand why ESPN has microphones on the field if the only thing you can hear is this extremely loud buzzing sound.

I thought this was funny.

There are some South Africans in every games, but I noticed that lots of other country fans had bought plastic horns.
They certainly feel the need to make more noise than other team, and it will certainly worst and worst unless FIFA do something, but they won't do it because it would be good to banned something from the host culture, and since corrupted Blatter dreams of a peace Nobel prize, he won't do it

The thing I don't understand is how you can take such a thing, even if cultural instrument, being used like this in continuous noise, and feel that it's good, in any POV.
Fans have to find something with rhythm, or sing something, but doing noise for doing noise like that is just stupid IMO.
This instrument is not the problem as you can do it with air horns, the use is the problem.

Originally this is an African specialty (as I know it is used in other African countries too) but other nations are using it because it is trendy. It bothers me also but I don't think it will be used in other competitions too... this is just an instantaneous trend.

In Europe the horns aren’t used to motivate your team… originally they use it to bother the opponent team. The drums are for motivation.

At Georgia Force football games, my group used maracas as noise makers. Other people used buckets, I felt we were affecting the high end and they were providing more bass. We would only use the maracas at the appropriate times when the Force was on defense and actually only during the calling of the play (we'd rest at snap normally to pay attention to the play). It wasn't a constant buzz which cannot give an advantage unless your team is pre-equipped with ear plugs.

I did notice the noise maker in the Euroleague basketball and found it very annoying then as well. It has no place in basketball and I really can't see the place for it in soccer. I was looking forward to some good old English soccer chants today. It will sad if I have to turn the audio off because it sounds like an effect from a SyFy movie about a killer swarm of insects.

I'm a soccer fan, born and raised in Brazil and have never seen the vuvuzelas before. FIFA is studying banning then in the world cup, which I totally support. The sound effect it has for the ones swatching it on TV is horrible. Now, the games are so fun. It's amazing how soccer can move with people's feelings from so many different contries. I was pleased with the way the U. S. played against England. Great game.

I could only go 20 minutes before I had to watch on mute because of the noise effect.

How can they have the energy to keep it going for the whole game? Man, those things are annoying as heck.

Vuvuzelas at every home game for the Hornets would be a really smart move. The Hive would actually sound like a hive!

The horns given out Saturday were about half the size as the vuvuzelas that provide the constant — some say annoying — buzz from the stands at World Cup matches. Nonetheless, they packed such a noisy punch for the Marlins and Rays that players and umpires quickly popped in earplugs, and conversations even in the dugouts were nearly impossible.
