I know it's a long shot he will be traded but if on market what could we put together in a trade to maybe get Carmelo? Maybe sign and trade for JJ and players or what?

Re: Any chance at Carmelo Anthony if traded?
Unless he would agree to an extension with us it would be a bad deal. Denver is only rumored to be willing to explore a trade if he won't agree to an extension. In essence they know the risk of losing him for nothing would be too great. But if he is set in his mind to experience the full free agency treatment then trading for him would be player rental.

I prefer to keep Al Horford, so a package that centers around Josh Smith would possibly work.
New Jersey can put together a package that centers around Derek Favors.
New York would be the ideal place for La La (Melo's wife) and a starting point for them would be Danilo Gallinari.

Carmelo is pretty sure to sign an extension with the Nuggets now since he won't want to hit FA under the new CBA. I think there is no chance he is traded.

If he is traded then it is because he didn't sign an extension.
If he didn't sign an extension than it is a HUGE risk to trade anything legitimate for him if he is likely to walk.

I think he winds up with the Nets or Wizards. The Nets will be in Brooklyn not too long after the lockout so they'll need a star to go with the core they are building. I don't expect them to be big spenders this summer and return to the lottery next year to add a PG (there are plenty projected in it). Then post lockout they should be the team with best talent and room under the cap to offer him whatever max they can under the new rules. The Wizards are the other team that I could see being involved via S&T. They've got a lot of young assets they could ship to Denver and its close to his home of Baltimore (which I actually think would be bad for him in the long run, but I wouldn't necessarily expect him to realize this).

Evil, great thought that we might actually get someone like CA. I just don't know; I think we are going to have to retrieve a superstar by drafting them.
Atlanta doesn't have any, and I repeat, any history of success bringing in FA. The best that come to mind in recent memory; Moses Malone and Reggie Theus.
We only were able to convince Dr. J to play for us briefly because we gave him $2M in '71.
Dominique was a draft day trade. Pistol Pete and David Thompson/Marvin Webster were draft picks.
This is the only way we bring in a superstar with the league so cap balanced. This isn't MLB baseball.
We can't outbid anyone.
Should Joe return, we would have to get into the 80M category in salaries to get another top player in here. We just aren't capable of doing it IMO.

I would perfer to let Joe walk with nothing in return than give him a max deal 6 years 119mil ! Because of that, I would be willing to take a chance that Carnelo would walk next year. At less we would have one year of seeing how a real superstar plays.

Marvin for Carmelo (with no extension) would work out financially. comes down to how bad Melo and LaLa want to come and live in ATL.

Re: Any chance at Carmelo Anthony if traded?
Here's the gamble if you trade a key asset like Josh Smith for Carmelo Anthony without an extension and then you risk him walking at the end of the year. If he walks then you've set your franchise back by years. The hope is that he'll love so much he will ultimately sign the extension. It might be the only way to get a star, but it is risky.
My feeling is that it is too risky (without an extension agreement) given the coming lockout. It very uncertain what climate you'll be trying to resign him in (under what rules). Also it will be the hardest time for an organization to make a positive impression.
I think it is a better time for us to jump into the S&T offer fray for a major line star. Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford match any salary in play and would give the team losing the star a potential all-star and salary relief after 1 year. The team would still be able to pay Joe Johnson the absurd contract and maintain Al Horford as 3rd piece of the puzzle. The problem is that outside of Lebron which is unrealistic and Dirk which is probably unrealistic as well that I'm not sure the other possibilities are worth it. Bosh maybe, but I'm not sure he's enough of an upgrade over Josh Smith to be worth it when you factor full games. Especially if a new head coach can get more consistently out of Josh. Boozer and Amare, I don't think so. I'm all for taking a run at Dirk or Lebron just to see if our sign and trade offer is better than others.
BTW, this is the bold overspending approach to try to drive up the value of the team. The more realistic approach understanding the ownership situation is go low dollar and build for a couple years from now (which is what I think we should and could successfully do). Expect me to come out with a more radical plan once the dust of free agency settles.
