Should the Hawks resign Joe?
Should the Hawks resign Joe, and use the $9M in cap space to invest in other players?
if the Hawks resign Joe, will he become better, and produce more, and be able stand toe to toe with Wade, Carmelo, and Lebron?
stay the same, and give the Hawks 22/5/5, be a leader and closer in the next five years?
or decline like Larry Hughes, or TMac, or Arenas, or Richard Jefferson, or Redd, and become irrelevant and on a steep decline?

No, they should S&T him because they don't really have $9M in cap space.

I think he's gonna resign. But will it hurt your team long term? Hmm.

Yes.
I don't want to be the 8th seed for years to come.

What real difference is there between a first-round loss and a second-round loss?

Posts like this confuse me because it insinuates that the Hawks are a contending team with Joe.

So you wanna be a 4th seed that will be lucky to make the 2nd round? We will probally fall back if we lose Joe, but it will help this team overrall. In the 4th-6th year of this contract we will be stuck paying a 32+ yr old 25+ mill a year. Now please tell me how this makes any since?

I think that with Joe and a couple of other moves (bringing in a backup pf/c), we can be a contending team. Smith, Horford, and Marvin will all improve (I believe), Teague will be improved, and with a new offense, we won't be relying on Joe to go all iso all the time.
I think without Joe we are worse off. marvin, smith, and horford will be locked up long term. Not many free agents will want to come to Atlanta if they are a consistent 8th seed or worse. So basically we are stuck with a firesale of Josh, Horford, and Marvin to try and suck to have a chance at future top picks. We sucked for long enough, do we really want to go back to that?

^^Dude do you not know how much 120 million is? You can pretty much say bye-bye to Jamal Crawford after this year, Al Horford will likely go eventually, and we will have Joe taking 1/3rd of the cap and possibly 1/2 by the 5th and 6th year. Will we be better this year with Joe? Sure. Will we better in 3 years? No.

The Hawks essentially have a 2-3 year window. I'm beginning to believe the speculation that the owners don't really care about the long-term problems and plan to dump the team as soon as they can.

I would rather be the 4th seed than the 8th seed.
Would you rather be the 8th seed or worse who won't be bad enough to get a top pick, won't be good enough to contend, and won't have enough cap space to offer any big name fa? Seems like an easy choice to me.

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
The Hawks would merely have to move Mike Bibby for an expiring contract to have cap space next season, FWIW. (And that's including a Josh Smith-sized extension for Horford).

And who are we signing in 2011? Caron Butler? Yao? Parker or Duncan?

I don't see the point of arguing. Signing Joe to the full max is a terrible move unless the ASG has decided to pay the luxury tax going forward(which seems highly unlikely).

whether it be it be Salmons, Kevin Martin, Matthews, or Joe, Hawks are going to be the 4th seed. but we know that Joe can't hit shots in the playoffs, Martin and Matthews might be able to hit shots in the playoffs, and Salmons might not (Please Use More Appropriate Word) Marvin's, Al's, and Josh's game.

I see the ASG trying to sell the team. I think they are hoping that by bringing back Joe, they are setting themselves up for a higher return. Just like renovating your house. Sure it costs a lot but you are hoping to get the return back at a later date.

Personally, I want one of Nene (perfect fit, IMO), Perkins, Dalembert, or Chandler. But that's just me. It's a center-heavy FA crop and I see the center position as what's holding the Hawks back long-term (Joe Johnson or not).
I also wouldn't be opposed to trying to nab Haywood (S&T) or Biedrins (a bit skeptical on him) this season.

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
I think they should resign him within the context of a sign and trade. Even though his trade value isn't great right now, he is still a caliber of player that I would hate to see walk for nothing. I don't think he deserves a max contract, but for the sake of exploring all options, couldn't we sign him to a max contract for a limited number of years so that we don't get into the latter few years when his max contract is so unbearable? That might make him more attractive as a trade peice, or even if he stayed here we could possibly trade him in a year when his trade value might be higher and his BYC status wears off. Of course, Joe would have to agree to a shorter contract, but it does at least put him on a max salary for a while with the flexibility of leaving in a few years. What would his contract be in 3 years on the max scale?

^ SnT for Carmelo (with no extension)? really depends on how much the negotiations break down between Melo and the Nuggets and if the Nuggets are scared of getting nothing in return if they can't get an extension worked out.

I think there are always short term replacements on the market. They might not be as good as Joe...but guys like Stephen Jackson,Maggette,Crawford and Salmons were acquired for almost nothing. I'd rather have any of those 3 than Joe on a 6 year 120 million dollar deal.
