Josh Smith possibly on the block

The Hawks have been exploring the possibility of trading Josh Smith as part of their summertime makeover, according to sources around the league.
This makes sense in the context of the story on Fanhouse.com, which describes the Hawks offering a two-year contract to Shaquille O'Neal. It's not clear what the Hawks want in return, but they could try to package Mike Bibby or Marvin Williams with Smoove to bring back a top-notch PG. Rotoworld.com

Don't do it unless it's a solid move like Smith/ Marvin / Bibby for Paul / Okafor (would that would with the salaries?

The concept is fine, but the reality is rough. How many top notch are there out there that you feel good about giving up an all-star calibre PF for? Chris Paul or Deron Williams? Sure, but probably not available. Steve Nash? Probably, but is he available? Rajon Rondo or Derrick Rose or John Wall? Not available. Tony Parker? Who knows? You quickly run out of elite PGs without finding any available. Once you get to 2nd tier PGs you find that you're given up a lot of talent in the deal. Do you really want to give up Josh for a Jameer Nelson or Maurice Williams? The answer is no.

How come every time we hear about one of our pieces being available we're instantly in the market for a PG? I mean, sure, if CP3 or Deron becomes available then that would change a lot teams' plans, but we're actually in OK shape @ PG right now. We could give Teague and Bibby 24 mins per and that could be a decent PG rotation. I wouldn't mind an upgrade on either, but I'd put that a lot lower on the list of needs than a "true C"... Or even SF

Actually I did take his age into account. Personally I wouldn't trade a 24 year all-star calibre PF for a 36 year old all-star PG, but I wouldn't have resigned Joe Johnson either. I was definitely willing to take a step back in order to enjoy better years 2-3 years down the road. I put probably because of the situation we find ourselves in. While it is a brief window I think that Steve Nash would sell tickets and give the best chance of balancing the offensive components of the team. I think his presence at PG would get easy shots for Joe and Marvin on the wings and really up the production of Al in the post. Ideally I think you need a strong defensive C to play behind Steve Nash because he is very weak defensively and we don't have that so it might not lead to anything great, but it would be worth the risk. Nash has shown more longevity than anyone could ever expect. By giving up Josh we'd being paying full retail price if not higher to acquire Nash at this point, but I only suspect that we have a 3 year window given the Joe Johnson contract and age anyway (which means a very short window of Teague being ready before Joe is passed his expiration date).

Josh for Nash. Got to be a joke.
If you guys can get Nash without giving up Josh, Al, JC, JJ. That makes sense.
Chances are Nash can be had by the all star break a lot cheaper than now. I think that's why the GM left he sees the inevitable. The Suns are about to nosedive.

it would be great..... but the Hornets owner is trying to cut salaries. Marvin and Smoove's contracts' don't do that.

although Shaq might start and the official box score might list Bosh as SF, Shaq is only really going to give you 20mpg, so their will be long stretches were it is going to be Horford/Bosh.
but i still wouldn't do it. Josh is the Hawks most valuable player, even if the box score only has him have 2 blocks, his defensive presence is far greater, and Josh doesn't get credit on how teams have to change their style of play when he is in the game.

I hope the hawks dont do anything stupid but if they going to do it I hope they trade him to my Spurs for TP.
Josh is so underrated.
In the post Jordan NBA big players and great defenders are undervalued.

Not necessarily. Smoove is my favorite player, but I'd have to trade him if we could acquire, say, a Melo.

Just woke up and realized why it would be worth it to trade Josh for Bosh. While it would be more expensive, it would prevent him from landing with either Miami or Chicago. Meanwhile Toronto would get Josh under contract for several more years. They wouldn't drop off as much, but they still likely wouldn't be a title threat. With Amare off the market, the best the Heat would likely do is Wade and Boozer. It could also make Chicago less attractive to Lebron (increasing the odds he stays with Cleveland which is which at SG). Ownership would really be stepping out on the edge with 2 full max players and Horford up for free agency soon, but it might be the only to keep the balance of power manageable. The big question is would Bosh be up for full max partnership with Joe Johnson?

Imagine trading J. Smith away, getting C. Anthony, and signing S. O'Neal? This would be a turn around like the Celtics did a couple of years ago. Championship caliber.

I will say this, there are 2 players I would trade Josh Smith for if we could get these players. They are LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and ONLY if they signed long term in Atlanta with the Hawks. There you go!!
