Hawks have no intentions moving Al to PF

Just posted this on another forum. Wanting to see what you think this means?
An NBA source confirmed a FanHouse.com report Monday evening that the Atlanta Hawks have an interest in signing free agent center Shaquille O'Neal, and sources have told NBA.com's Sekou Smith that the team has discussed a two-year deal worth $11.7 million for O'Neal. However, the source cautioned that the Hawks' interest in the 38-year-old O'Neal is "preliminary" and that the team, no matter what big man it brings in, has no intention of moving All-Star center Al Horford to power forward in any scenario.

The source said the Hawks' interest in O'Neal is not significantly greater than the team's interest in other free agent centers like Zydrunas Ilgauskas or Brad Miller, and that the team has just begun examining whether it needs another big man to play with Horford and backup Zaza Pachulia, who Atlanta likes a great deal as a reserve. However, the possibility exists that Hawks ownership may view O'Neal as an attractive component next season and could be driving the team's pursuit of the 15-time All-Star and two-time Finals MVP.

And given that ownership just stepped up to the plate and okayed Joe Johnson's six-year, $119 million contract, it may have some additional leeway.

O'Neal indicated during the playoffs that he thought he could play one or two more seasons as a starter. His one-season stint with the Cavaliers had some solid moments, and O'Neal did not play badly in the playoffs, averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds for Cleveland on 66 percent shooting from the floor. But he could not stop the Cavs' collapse in the second round against the Celtics and whether he returns to Cleveland next season is a major question. Sources indicate the Cavaliers are very interested in Dallas free agent center Brendan Haywood. O'Neal could also have other options of his own as well.

The Hawks also do not want to mess too much with a team that won 53 games in the regular season, even though Atlanta was taken apart by Orlando in the second round. There have been murmurs that the Hawks are shopping forward Josh Smith, who had one of his best seasons last year. However, a source with knowledge of the Hawks' thinking said that the team would only contemplate moving Smith for a major, star player at power forward.

Now that Johnson is back in the fold, Atlanta's major change for next season will be getting more playing time for second-year point guard Jeff Teague, who will likely take up many of the minutes from veteran Mike Bibby

We shouldn't view the ASG with the commonly held perception as being "cheap". Too much of that perception came from the legal battles with Belkin and the court mandated ruling of staying under tthe salary cap. Now that the ASG has put that comfortably behind them, they're showing a willingness to spend to upgrade the roster. Our star is about to leave? Give him the max and the tax be d@mned. We still have some other parts to get though. A "true C"? Offer Shaq the MLE. Worried about Smith and a true C sharing the low block? Trade Smith for an upgrade (Bosh?).

I have a feeling we're looking @ a real FO that is committed to winning a championship... Hope it continues

i'm very happy. getting shaq would be adding another asset to our team. We have some great pieces in place, and if the right deal becomes available, the flexibility to make a franchise altering trade as well.

Heres the deal Hawks! Having a big man rotation of Shaq, Al, Zaza and Josh give us versitility and the ability to move the score on the second unit and defend the post. We need to start Teague and use Josh as a slasher and run the ball more. In addition having Jordan Crawford allows us to interchange guards and possibly pressure. Marvin Williams and Jamal Crawford, zaza, bibby and Maurice evans is the best second unit in the east with versitility. Remember Shaq would only be on the floor with Al about 10 - 15 minutes per night!

Actually, thez best versatility we can get is by signing Brad Miller instead of Shaq.

- He would certainly agree to come from the bench, which Shaq seems to refuse.
- Unlike Shaq, he would give us the opportunity to use Josh at SF for some actions because he can spread the floor with his mid-range/long-range shot and ability to pass the ball, allowing Josh to be near the basket even with a C and PF on the floor.

Mainly it wouldn't be needed because he can play behind Al and Josh, splitting the 96min of both positions.

Very good insight and I'm not just saying that because I've been pushing for Brad Miller for a while. The stretching the floor aspect is the big thing. Shaq does have his positives, but I think Brad Miller is the best fit for what we need.

The part of that article that seems strange to me is that part about Josh would only be shopped for an all-star PF. Considering that Josh was almost an all-star that would leave a small margin of improvement in any trade.

Trade Horford to Orlando, and get a good young center in Gortat.

Let's see whether I got the point in this article or not...

...if we sign Shaq, who could play 24 minutes a night or so, imo, and having Zaza, who can play more or less the same amount of minutes, Horford will still be our center.

So, we are signing Shaq to play point guard?
