Breaking down the available bigs

Post#1 » by evildallas » Sat Jul 17, 2010 9:08 pm

I tried to be comprehensive, but I could have missed someone. + is what I see as positive - is what I see as negative

Louis Amundson 6'9 225 27
+ great energy - will cost more than minimum
Earl Barron 7'0 250 29
+ produced when given a chance - no one seems to want to give him that chance
Kwame Brown 6'11 270 28
+ NBA body - questionable motivation, bad hands
Erick Dampier 6'11 265 35
+ strong defensively when he wants to play - must be cut by Charlotte first, doesn't always want to play
Rasho Nesterovic 7'0 250 34
+ long - not a strong rebounder
Fabricio Oberto 6'10 245 35
+ experienced - performance cratered last year
Shaquille O'Neal 7'1 340 38
+ big name could sell tickets - wants most money and to start
Olechsiy Pecherov 7'0 234 24
+ still developing - too thin, too soft
Josh Powell 6'9 225 27
+ experience with championship team - per minute numbers actually weak
Theo Ratliff 6'10 225 37
+ can still block shots - hasn't played much in reality last 5 years
Joe Smith 6'10 225 35
+ cheap - provided little last year on the floor
Etan Thomas 6'9 258 32
+ decent defender - not much court time since missing a year with a heart condition
Kurt Thomas 6'9 230 37
+ savvy vet, brings attitude - might be a few years too late for him
Anthony Tolliver 6'8 245 25
+ stretch PF with some range - not a strong rebounder
Chris Wilcox 6'10 221 27 (under contract with Detroit possible trade)
+ 3M fits on TPE, had best years with Sonics - really under performed with Detroit last year

Kurt, Damp, Barron, and Amundson I would take. I question if Barron can contribute consistently. Damp is a fairy but he has nice height and atleast tries to protect the rim. Hopefully we get a big that doesnt float around the perimeter and can have some sort of impact on the defensive end.

Nice work/post. Not that impressive of a list but, Kurt Thomas, Shaq, and Barron would interest me. Kurt Thomas showed he still has something in the tank in our series, but his problem is that he will provide virtually zero scoring, but he plays very good defense and wouldn't be a bad option off the bench. Shaq provides the mentality that this team needs..he isn't afraid of anyone inside, and plays strong post D on the best big men in the game, but his offensive game has taken a huge hit, and his inability to make FTs can hurt you over the course of a game. Barron really interests me, but I am stunned by the lack of interest. 29 years old, and has improved a lot in each of his three NBA seasons, but only got limited time last year in just 7 games where he averaged 12/11. 7 footer, which we need, and looks like he could be a hidden gem or just a fluke. I wouldn't mind Dampier either, but I fear that we won't get the Dampier you saw last year since it was his contract year.

I would like some combination of Barron, Tolliver, Kwame, and Dampier, with the latter two getting one year contracts.

I really wish there was a way the Hawks could trade for Brandon Bass. How much is our TE from the Childress trade worth?

Also-don't forget Craig Smith who is still an UFA to my knowledge.

OOOOO. Ya, I love me some Craig Smith. Hes a rhino that could give us some added toughness.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

There is another thread on that. The TPE is only half his 1st season salary on the new contract so not enough for Brandon Bass. I'm also unsure whether Orlando would deal with us.

You forgot to mention JOSH BOONE, I think he is the best of the remaining FA at C. Still young, can rebound and block some shots, provides defense and can score in the post, it´s a no brainer, he is the best available and could be signed cheap. I would also go with Earl Barron, big body, can rebound and play defense and produces when given the opportunity.

From the other thread:

D21 wrote:We don't know the value of Childress' TPE:
it can be:
- his first year salary if it's less than $4,357,741
- $3,631,451 if his first year is between $4,357,741 and $7,262,902
- 50% of his first year salary if this first year is higher than $7,262,902

More than $7,262,902 is still possible because a 34M/5yrs descending contract can start at $8,607,595

Now, it seems his contract his 6.66% ascending, starting at 6M.
It means we should get a TPE of $3,631,451

My oversights so far:

Josh Boone 6'10 237 25
+ Young, decent block and rebound numbers - wasn't retained in NJ
Craig Smith 6'7 250 26
+ good offensively (PER), thick and strong - a tweener without true position

He played in summer league after playing in China last year. Given his checkered past I don't think the Hawks would take a chance on him.

For me Boone is the best big available also but I would go with another C instead of Craig Smith, we already have enough PF, let´s sign another big body to stop Dwight with some fouls, Earl Barron could fit nicely.

Maybe later I'll start marking them off the master list at the top of the thread.
