Considering Patrick Mills

Post#1 » by evildallas » Tue Aug 3, 2010 1:45 am

Considering that the Blazers signed Armon Johnson they should be at the max on contracts. I think that would make Patty Mills the odd man out without a contract. He played well in the Olympics and in summer league. He's a penetrating PG that might provide good insurance for Teague at league minimum prices. He didn't get much PT in Portland but in his brief (5 game) stint in the D-league he tore it up including 50% from 3 pt range and it wasn't exactly a small sample (9 attempts per game). He also had a memorable battle in college with Steph Curry.

PG isn't the highest priority right now, but since we're only going to spend the minimum and have to sign 1 more player I like the potential value that Patty Mills could provide to the Hawks.

I think our backcourt is set and we should focus on adding more size.

Patrick Mills is not one of the 15 players under contract for the Trail Blazers.
He could still re-sign with the Blazers if they pull off a trade, or sign with another NBA team, but it sounds more likely that he'll end up in Europe this season. Link

I agree that we need size more but given the type of players they've signed recently I just want them to sign someone with some upside rather than another Jason Collins-type. I'm also thinking longer term with this 13th roster spot. For instance I'd bring Patrick Mills in for a look and if I liked what I saw then I'd ink him for 2 years fully anticipating that next year I will not be resigning Jamal Crawford and Mike Bibby will hopefully be traded as an expiring deal to secure help elsewhere in the roster. Then it would better to have 2 PGs who have been in the system still on the roster than scrounging for a replacement when I know what the fiscal limitations are for concerning the ASG.

Of course, I would use the full roster and actually try to develop young talent to fill rotational roles on the cheap so I have little in common with the management of the Hawks. Realistically we'll get Joe Smith or Mario West back as the last Hawk.

I hope we remain one of the healthiest teams in the league because if we ever suffer major injuries we'll see how crappy their bench signings truly are (at least in my opinion).

I'm a huge Patty Mills fan. I definitely see him as worth bringing in during Pre-Season. Maybe stash him on the inactive list if he shows some potential. he has had flashes of brilliance, and he seems to do all the things that Jeff Teague doesn't.

The Portland Trail Blazers still hold the rights to guard Patty Mills, who is a restricted free agent.

The Blazers have made a qualifying offer worth $937,000 to Mills, which he has yet to accept. The non-guaranteed deal does not expire until March 1, 2011. Thus, if Mills chooses to play in Europe this season, the Blazers would still own his NBA rights. Portland also has the ability to match any offer made by another NBA team to Mills.

The Blazers' roster is set at 15 players following the signing Monday of rookie guard Armon Johnson. But Portland can carry at least 20 players into training camp. Thus, there is a chance Mills could still compete for a spot with the Blazers in October. If this happens, Portland and Mills would eventually have to reach an agreement about his contract.

The Blazers are about $3 million above the NBA's luxury tax — set at $70.3 million for the 2010-11 season — following the addition of Johnson. Portland will likely try and find a remedy for the situation if the team makes a trade before the season tips off in late October.Link

So much for that idea.
