Hawks announced the move today! I like this move by Coach Larry Drew. Drew and Van Exel go back to the (pre- Shaq and Kobe era) Lakers of the early 90's. Drew was an assistant under first time Coach Magic Johnson.

Van Exel can really guide our younger player likes Teague and Jordan Crawford.

Thoughts?

Eh, not a bad move. On the other hand, you never know how players will pan out as coaches.

I grew up idolizing Nick Van Exel.

I followed his career closely.

It can go both ways. He was a very emotional and unstable player. Let's see how much he matured. I pray for the best.

I am encouraged by the move. I don't really have an opinion on Van Exel, but I didn't think we had a Player Development Coach before so getting one is a plus.

Nick the Quick starred and Cincinnati back when DePaul was still decent. As an upper classman, Nick couldn't handle our freshman McDonalds AA point guard Howard Nathan. Nathan failed out of DePaul after his freshamn year (back when athletes could still fail out of school) and then bounced around before having a very brief pro career highlighted by a 5 game stint with the Hawks. Got fat, got in trouble and then ended up getting shot and paralyzed about 15 years ago. Died recently.

Damn I took this thread to a dark place.....

I read he was the dude from Hoop Dreams but I only vaguely remember him. Man that was a tremendous documentary.
