Charlotte has waived Erick Dampier and reports are suggesting that Miami is interested. It'd be nice if we could sign him to the vet minimum but the Miami Heat will most likely do it.

Hawks should atleast put out an offer, because if they don't, then he will go to another team in the conference.

I think Thomas is on an unguaranteed deal so if the team values Damp over him he could be waived but all things being equal, where would you rather play for the MLE?
Why'd I type MLE, vet min*

No need, you know where he's going already.

Can we get rid of the useless Zaza and let him run his restaurant cause thats the best thing he can probably do... Dampier is not a very good C, but he's 1000000000000000000000000 times better than him.

I think I would keep Zaza, but waive Powell and Collins.
Dampier deserves twice the minimum if both Powell and Collins get it, easily.

The other Erick Dampier topic will be merged with this one later on.
Dampier ponders free-agent optionsFree-agent center Erick Dampier(notes) is finalizing a list of teams he’ll meet with in the near future, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.
Dampier’s list is expected to be topped by the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, as well as a potential sleeper: the Atlanta Hawks. Dampier still hasn’t decided how many teams he wants to meet with, but there are multiple suitors for him.
The Heat have been believed to be the favorite, but the Rockets also have been aggressive in pursuit of Dampier, whom they want to play behind Yao Ming(notes). The Rockets say they won’t play Yao more than 24 minutes in a game this season, and will sit him on back-to-back games. Houston has offered Dampier a two-year contract, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Dampier, 35,was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats from the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason, and the Bobcats recently waived him to spare paying the $13 million on the final year of his deal. Dampier averaged six points and 7.3 rebounds in 55 games for the Mavericks last season.

Over at the HOU site, they're quoting the Houston Chronicle as saying the deal is 2 years for $4 million total (

The Hawks have to at least offer that to have a shot at Damp....2/4
A 3 year deal might seal it.

What can we offer ?
I have updated info here :
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=815375We are now at 68,336,484 with 14 players,
but only 67,829,416 for Tax purpose.
Tax threshold is 70,307,000
leaving 2,477,584 of room under the Tax
But Josh and Marvin have unlikely bonus they can earn, and if they earn it, it will be added at the end of the season for Tax purpose.
ASG will not use this money and risk to pay Tax.
So I think the money they would agree to use would be at best :
2,477,584 - 335,000 - 550,000 = 1,592,584
A two years contract would be 1,592,584 + 1,719,992.72 = 3,312,574.72
so less than HOU offered
A third year would be absolutely required, unless Dampier think he can show more here than in HOU and would agree to sign for one year and get another contract next summer.
Or we can regret that ASG offered contracts to guys like Collins or Powell

One thing about Dampier from his last FA: he wanted to stay close to his Mississippi home. We were in on him, but DAL won him with the ability to win, while his PT and distance to Mississippi were similar. I've always wondered why MIA was considered such a lock to get him considering that he's always wanted to be closer to home.
My thought from D21's salary cap notes would be to offer what HOU is offering, but include a PO for year 3. Then attempt to dump one of Josh Powell, Etan Thomas, or Jason Collins. At vet mini salaries, we should be able to get someone to bite without any sweetener. Even if we do, it shouldn't be more than a future 2nd - this isn't a grossly overpaid player we're talking about. The extra headroom should be enough to land Dampier.

Simply put, if we were very interested in Damp, Collins and Thomas could have come into camp with no guarantee.
Strange how some guys have to prove themselves every year, and some vets just keep getting guaranteed deals (Joe Smith, Collins, Kwame Brown).
Sund isn't going over the cap to bring in Center #5.
Must be a height thing.

I would welcome Dampier here, but I cannot understand why expending money in four serviceable big men (Dampier, Powell, Collins, Thomas), not to mention Zaza, instead than throwing all that money and effoer in bringing in somebody who can really play decent inside game.
