Should we be going for Marc Gasol?

Memphis just overpaid Conley, huge. Far be it from me to sound like the rest of RealGM speculating about us, but is there anything we could toss at them outside of Horford for him? I think I'd be okay sending out Josh if it meant we got an extended Gasol back.

But if they had to pay Josh Smith, why wouldn't pay Gasol instead with the same money ?
I'd like to have Gasol in ATL, but if MEM was trading for Smith, I think they would prefer have both Gasol and Smith than Randolph and Smith.

Well the idea would be that we trade Smoove for Gasol + overpaid players like Thabeet and Tony Allen, which we could do due to BYC. We'd take on additional salary next year, and save them ~$9 mil (if they sent Thabeet/TA) and at least $3mil the year after.

If MEM like overpaid players (they also overpaid Rudy Gay the way we did with Joe), we could send Joe instead on Dec 15th ;)

The problem with your idea is that we would need to extend Gasol, so if we take back the same salary than Smith, including Gasol to be extended, the total next year will be higher than Josh Smith's salary.

Gasol should get a big contract, he was nearly an All-Star last year, and is nearly on the same value than Horford IMO, mainly because he's very efficient.

1) I'd love to have Gasol. He and Horford would be dynamite.
2) MEM would be insane to trade a true NBA center. I don't believe there are 10 of those in existence.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I refuse to treat the Grizzlies like we are being treated by Chad Ford. Signing a player doesn't necessarily mean a key young player like Gasol will have to be moved or walk. It could just mean a well paid older player like Zack Randolph isn't getting an extension.

I agree. I'm tired of this "it's open season on young player x because team extended young player y" nonsense.
