I doubt we can contend with New Jersey's offer.
Sources say the best trade proposal Denver has received remains the offer from New Jersey centered around No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors and two first-round picks. Link

Re: Even if Carmelo Antony wanted to be a Hawk...
My thought is that internet posters generally overrate cap room, prospects, and picks. GMs generally prefer to get young players with present production over unknowns. It wouldn't surprise me if DEN would think a trade involving Smoove or Horford is more enticing to them than a trade involving Favors + 2 picks - it just depends on how much they like Smith, Horford, and Favors.
Either way, I've seen 'Melo as a pipe dream for some time now. Even if I believed that 'Melo was a guy that the ASG would pay the tax to keep next to JJ, we'd still have to rebuild the front court and I don't see the guys to do that with.

The Hawks would be foolish to deal Josh Smith or Al Horford without getting Anthony to sign an extension. As for the value of picks it depends a lot on the protection and likely finish of the team. Remember that Miami gave away a couple of picks each to Cleveland and to Toronto just so they could sign an extra year on the contracts of Lebron and Bosh. Admittedly Cleveland and Toronto had no leverage, but it shows that late first rounders weren't that coveted by Miami. The team that gets Carmelo has to expect the picks they deal are going to be in the 20s.

Well we could always try to work a three-way deal, we would help the Nets get Melo and offer DEN Smoove-with-a-Jumper for Nene. That's how it would work:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... Id=2d5vr2b
NJN acquires Carmelo Anthony (17.1) and Mike Bibby (5.5) for Harris, Murphy and Favors. Get to keep their picks since Harris is leaving, and gets something for Murphy instead of just letting him walk.
DEN acquires Josh Smith (11.7, SF), Troy Murphy (11.9 expiring), Derrick Favors (4.9) and ATL first (2011). Since it looks like Melo is gone anyway, they could hardly dream about doing any better than this, A stud, a great prospect and a huge expiring would do the trick if I was the GM.
ATL acquires Nene Hilario (11.3) and Devin Harris (8.9) for Bibby, Smoove and 2011 first. (this would be a no-brainer IMHO). Sund sucks at drafting anyway, his picks never get to see the floor.
Harris/Teague
JJ/Crawford/Crawford
Marvin/Mo
Horford/Powell
Nene/Zaza/Collins
Then just flip Jamal and filler if needed at the trade deadline for a GOOD SF, 10 mill expiring should be enough for one of these:
Prince,
Maggette,
Iguodala,
Kevin Martin (JJ plays the 3),
Gay,
Ariza,
Turkoglu, lots of options there. We could win it all!

I've been saying this since the reported "toast" at his wedding....I don't see any way Melo signs a contract(right now or next summer) with any other team besides NY or Denver.

I think you're backing my point. MIA basically traded 4 1st round picks so they could pay Bosh and LeBron marginally more in the next 2 seasons (there is an out clause in all 3 deals so they could resign them with Bird Rights). I've seen many posts (admittedly, more on the T&T board than here) that basically posit that a good player for a prospect or 2 (or a 1st instead) has more value than someone actually seeing PT... and a player signed to a smaller term is automatically better than 1 signed to a longer term. I realize that each team's situation can and will differ based on that team's particular circumstance, but it drives me batty to see some posters who think that there are hard and fast rules that dictate the trade value of such things - even though they don't necessarily apply to every team.
I'd pass, but I'm not nearly as high on Harris as some others are. He plays well against us, but his skills match up to our biggest weakness. The greater majority of his games are marred by high usage/low efficiency (aka, a chucker) and no ability from 3. He's also someone that tends to lapse on D, but I'd guess Avery has worked on that... but could LD get the same?BrazilianHawk wrote:ATL acquires Nene Hilario (11.3) and Devin Harris (8.9) for Bibby, Smoove and 2011 first. For the 2nd deal, I can't see any of them. On the one hand, I couldn't see us taking on salary in future years; on the other, our cap situation also means that we prolly won't be adding 1sts for short term upgrades. It leaves us in a true catch-22 if we look to trade Jamal, teams willing to dump expirings would want the prospects we're not trading, while we're not looking to take on salary from teams looking to dump longer term contracts.

New Jersey now has 5 firsts in the next two years to throw around and some might be high enough to covet.
