Mr. Smith goes to Phoenix

Post#1 » by Real GM Fiend » Sat Feb 12, 2011 1:58 pm

The best the Suns could offer is Lopez/Dragic/Carter and picks for Smith/Crawford. Is their any package in there you think the Hawks would take? More than likely the Suns would like to get Teauge back if they do trade Dragic. Just wondering what you expect to get for Smith or if you would rather hang on to him and if you think Horford and Smith can co-exist.

So Atlanta trades Smith and Crawford for downgrades throughout?

I think a base deal for Smith has to include Nash and Lopez for discussions to even begin...and even then some Hawk fans would say they would be unwilling to part with Smith in a deal like that.

Horford and Smith can co-exist, as they have been doing since Horford was drafted.

You do realize the link goes to trade failed because Carter can't be used in combination with anyone at this point.

And to restate Horford and Smith can and do co-exist. Smith has even shown more of an ability to play SF allowing Horford to move to PF, so even that isn't a reason to dump Smith cheaply. Nash would have to be in the discussions, but I'm not sure the Hawks front office agree. They may consider his age and the 1 year left on his contract to indicate he's more of a rental likely to bolt or retire after just 1 full year here.

Previously, Smith had to play PF, forcing Horford to Center. Lately, however, Smoove's been improving at SF, so he and Horford are no longer fighting for the same position.

How about Crawford for Dragic, Lopez and Pietrus after the 18th?
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I couldn't see PHX parting with either Dragic or Lopez for a rental of Crawford. I'm not 100% we'd trade Crawford for Pietrus considering Pietrus' PO for next season. I'd think that neither team would really consider this...

I could see Phoenix doing the deal just to get rid of Pietrus. Dragic has fallen off the map after his playoff run and I've been noticing some DLeaguer playing in his place. Lopez is expendable also because of the emergence of Gortat. So given the team's cap sensitivity, their glut of highly paid SFs, reluctance to trade Nash and Dragic's regression they could be very interested in Jamal for a playoff run now and salary dump later.
The deal works for us because Dragic still has loads of potential, Lopez would be a better and more mobile big than we have and Pietrus is an offensive and defensive upgrade over Mo and Damien and can chuck like Jamal.
